"Hope He Will Play In IPL": Sourav Ganguly's Big Wish For Indian Cricketer
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday said he wants to help Tripura to flourish in cricket, besides promoting the state's tourism sector as its brand ambassador. Addressing a press conference, he said he follows Tripura's cricket players and is impressed with Manisankar Murasingh. "I am a cricketer and want to help the state cricket body. I want the state to build a stadium to host big matches. If Guwahati can host India team's matches, why can't Tripura?" he asked.
"I follow the players who are playing for Tripura, and I am impressed by the way Manisankar Murasingh plays in various tournaments. I hope he will play in IPL," said the former BCCI president.
Notably, Manisankar's name was absent from the IPL 2024 Player Auction list.
Ganguly signed an agreement with state Tourism Minister Sushant Chowdhury at the Ujjyanta Palace. As part of the agreement, he will be the brand ambassador of Tripura Tourism.
"I am really honoured to be the brand ambassador of Tripura. I agreed to the offer when Chowdhury first approached me in June. The northeastern state has a lot to offer to the tourists," he said.
"I am here after 35 years and witnessed a lot of development. I am really impressed by the beauty of the Ujjyanta Palace. We will work together to promote the state's tourism sector not only nationally but also globally," he added.
Ganguly is scheduled to visit Chhabimura in the Gomati district and shoot an advertisement there. He will also meet Chief Minister Manik Saha.
When asked about his commitment to West Bengal, his home state that has also appointed him as its brand ambassador, Ganguly said, "Why I shall not be able to perform my assigned tasks?" Chowdhury said that his government was trying to promote tourism in a big way.
"With Saurav Ganguly joining us as the brand ambassador, the sector will touch a new high," he said.

"Surprise Inclusion": Manjrekar On India Star's Selection For SA ODIs
One of the finest white-ball bowlers for India over the last few years, Yuzvendra Chahal found his way back into the ODI team after missing out on the Cricket World Cup 2023. Chahal was drafted into India's squad for the ODI series against South Africa. Though Chahal has both statistics and experience backing his selection, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar was left surprised by the leg-spinner's inclusion in the squad, saying for him, Chahal is more of a 'T20 bowler'.
"I like it. Again this is workload management, but I am excited with the fact that Deepak Chahar is back because I like him as a cricketer. Avesh Khan gets another opportunity," Manjrekar said on Star Sports show 'Game Plan'.
"I believe Mukesh Kumar is a sturdy and dependable bowler, he has come. Chahal is a surprise inclusion. I thought Chahal was more your bowler for T20 cricket but there they have got somebody like a (Ravi) Bishnoi," he added.
Manjrekar admitted being pleased with the addition of Royal Challengers Bangalore batter Rajat Patidar in India's squad for the ODI series.
"Rajat Patidar - really happy to see him fit and raring to go. A big promotion for Rinku Singh. He has now become a part of ODI cricket. I saw Sanju Samson playing ODIs against South Africa in India and I got slightly excited there as well, that he is a good option."
"I am always excited when I see India's second string or next-generation players. It seems like it is a very strong team but the problem is that South Africa are a formidable team in white-ball cricket and bilateral series. So it will be a stiff test but this team is very good," he concluded.

Rohit "Is Waiting...": Gavaskar On India's "Good Problem" In T20Is
The India vs South Africa T20I series is one of the few assignments for the 'Men in Blue' before next year's T20 Cricket World Cup. India's wait for their first ICC title since 2013 is on and next year's T20 Cricket World Cup presents a chance to end that drought. If the initial signs are anything to go by, the BCCI selectors are not averse to giving youngsters the chance with an eye on the T20 Cricket World Cup. The side that has been picked for the South Africa Tour, where India will play three T20Is apart from other format matches, is a young one with the likes of Rinku Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Tilak Varma being the highlights.
There were reports that Rohit Sharma was asked to lead the side that is now being led by Suryakumar Yadav. However, the regular India captain asked for a break from the white-ball leg of the Tour. However, certain reports are saying he might be considered for the T20 Cricket World Cup.
Ahead of the first T20I between India and South Africa, Sunil Gavaskar was asked about India's likely opening combination and he made an interesting comment.
"For this series, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there. He has also done well. If the team wants left-hand, right-hand combination then Shubman Gill and Yashashvi Jaiswal," Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.
"It's a very good problem to have. Also there is Rohit Sharma, who is waiting, whether he is going to be available for T20 World Cup that remains to be seen."
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has praised 'Men in Blue' skipper Rohit Sharma and said that he has done a great job during the ODI World Cup 2023. In an interview during 'ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash', Gambhir said India dominated the World Cup and had just one bad game.
"In captaincy, Rohit has done a very, very good job. It is not easy to win five IPL trophies. The way India have dominated in the last 50-over World Cup and I said that before the World Cup final as well...I said that irrespective of the result, whatever the result is after the World Cup, India played like a champion side. One bad game doesn't make Rohit Sharma or this side a bad team. Ten games and the way they have dominated the whole tournament. Just because of one bad game if you call Rohit Sharma a bad captain, this is not fair," Gambhir said.
After 10 straight wins in the marquee tournament, India lost the final to Australia.
The 42-year-old former player opined that Rohit should lead the Indian team in the 2024 T20 World Cup if he is in good form.

Holder, Mayers, Pooran Decline Central Contracts Offered By CWI
Former West Indies skippers Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran and all-rounder Kyle Mayers turned down the central contracts from Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the 2023-24 season but confirmed their availability for the T20I series during the contract year. CWI released an official statement to announce the list of central contracts for 2023-2024 for both men and women cricketers and confirmed the three players declining the offer.
"Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran declined the offer of central contracts but confirmed their availability for all West Indies T20 Internationals during the contract year," CWI said in a statement.
The contracts are offered based on player performances during the 2022-2023 evaluation period, following recommendations from the selection panels and approval by the Board of Directors.
For the first time, four West Indies players received central contracts, which included left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, right-hand batter Keacy Carty, and left-hand batters Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze.
West Indies men's lead selector, Desmond Haynes stated that the contracts that have been offered were given keeping the upcoming "busy cricket year" in mind.
"With a busy year of cricket ahead, in all three formats, we have held several detailed discussions with the two head coaches on the brand of cricket they want to play. We are very clear in the direction we want to go. The players who have been offered contracts are among those who we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 on home soil," Desmond said in a statement released by CWI.
West Indies Women's Lead Selector, Ann Browne-John said, "The selectors have identified a cadre of players who we believe can drive West Indies cricket forward. We have emphasised the development of the younger players, which we view as pivotal in the pathway to the international level. We have several high-profile bilateral series and major global events on the horizon and with this in mind, we want to have our players prepared and ready for every occasion."
