Pakistan Register 3 Big Embarrassing Records With 1st Test Loss To England

England registered a dominant win over Pakistan in the first Test in Multan on Friday. The Three Lions won by an innings and 47 runs to take an early lead in the three-match series. The win was England's fourth consecutive Test triumph on Pakistan soil, after a 3-0 whitewash two years ago. England had only won two away Tests against Pakistan in the previous 61 years. It was also filled with several new milestones for England. Opting to bat first, Pakistan posted 556, thanks to captain Shan Masood's 151 and centuries from Agha Salman and Abdullah Shafique. In reply, Harry Brook smashed 317 and Joe Root a record-setting 262 in England's mammoth 823 for 7 declared, giving the visitors a 267-run lead. The Ollie Pope-led side then bundled out Pakistan for mere 220 to win the game by an innings and 47 runs.

Here are the three embarrassing records that Pakistan registered with loss to England -

Pakistan became the team with highest total to lose a Test Match by an innings. They scored 556 runs and lost the match vs England, surpassing Ireland's 492 that had come in their innings and 10 runs defeat against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2023.

The Shan Masood-led side became the first-ever team to lost a Test match for five times despite scoring over 500 runs in first innings.

With the defeat vs England, Pakistan equalled their longest winless streak at home. They have failed to win any of their past 11 games. Last time it happened between February 1969 to March 1975.

The second Test kicks off at the same venue from Tuesday while the third game will be played in Rawalpindi from October 24.

156.7 Kmph Pace Sensation In Reserves As India Name Squad For NZ Tests

Premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah was on Friday named vice-captain of India for the upcoming three-match home Test series against New Zealand, strongly indicating his possible elevation to the leadership role when the team travels to Australia from next month. The three-match series against the Kiwis will start on November 16 in Bengaluru, followed by the second Test in Pune from October 24 and third game in Mumbai from November 1.

As reported by PTI on October 10, regular captain Rohit Sharma could skip one of the first two Test matches in Australia owing to personal reasons.

The five-match Test series in Australia starts on November 22 in Perth and the second match will be held at Adelaide from December 6, and there is a possibility that Rohit could give either the first or the second game a miss.

Adding strength to that thought is the fact that India did not name a vice-captain for the recent home series against Bangladesh, which they won 2-0.

Bumrah has prior experience of leading the side as he wore the captain's armband during the rescheduled fifth Test match against England in July 2022 at Edgbaston. He also led India in the away T20I series against Ireland in 2023.

Recently, Bumrah also reclaimed his No. 1 spot in the ICC bowlers' ranking after a stellar effort against Bangladesh.

The 30-year-old has been in riveting form in red-ball cricket, grabbing 42 wickets from eight Tests after his comeback from an injury in August 2023. He has an excellent average of 14.69 in this period.

Overall, Bumrah has played 38 Tests, taking 170 wickets, averaging 20.18 with 10 five-wicket hauls.

Yash Dayal, who was part of the squad for the Bangladesh series, was not selected after the pacer sustained a shoulder injury during Uttar Pradesh's Ranji Trophy match against Bengal in Lucknow on Friday.

It is not yet clear how long Dayal will take to recover from the injury, casting a shadow over his chances of touring Australia.

Other than that, all the players who did duty against Bangladesh recently were retained in the 15-member squad which will be led by Rohit.

Pacer Mohammed Shami, who is recuperating after an ankle surgery, was not considered, as the wait for his return to international cricket continues.

All-rounder Harshit Rana, middle-order batsman Nitish Kumar Reddy, pacers Mayank Yadav and Prasidh Krishna were named as travelling reserves in the squad, also underlining the prioritised place for these young players in the long-term Indian scheme of things.

Both Nitish and Mayank have been impressive in their maiden outing for India during the ongoing three-match T20I series against Bangladesh.

India's squad for the New Zealand Test series: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep.

Brook Shatters Sehwag's 20-Year-Old Record With Multan Triple Hundred

England batter Harry Brook slammed his maiden Test triple hundred on Day 4 of the ongoing 1st Test against Pakistan in Multan. Brook took just 310 balls to reach the mark, which made him only the sixth Englishman to hit a triple century in Test cricket. Brook got out on 317 while trying to up the ante, but his breathtaking batting allowed England to pile 823/7d and take a first innings lead of 267 runs. However, his knock, which was laced with 28 fours and three sixes, allowed him to break a two-decade-long record.

Brook now holds the record of registering the highest individual Test score in Multan, surpassing former India batter Virender Sehwag's 309 against the same opponents in 2004.

His latest feat placed him in the list of legends like Andy Sandham, Len Hutton, Wally Hammond, Graham Gooch, and Bill Edrich, who also scored triple centuries for England.

Brook joined Joe Root in the middle on Day 3 when England were comfortably placed at 249/3. Brook and Root put on 454 for the fourth wicket as England piled up the fourth-highest innings in Test cricket.

Brook and Root enjoyed a run-feast on a flat Multan stadium pitch, both knocking career-best scores to give England a 267 lead over Pakistan's first innings total of 556.

Brook completed his triple century with a boundary off part-timer Ayub, reaching the mark off 310 balls before he top-edged a sweep off the same bowler and was caught by Masood.

Brook cracked 29 fours and three sixes in his 439-minute stay at the crease.

But Root -- who broke Alastair Cook's England Test run record of 12,472 on Wednesday -- fell short of a triple hundred as he was trapped leg-before by Salman Agha after a marathon 10 hour-stay suring which he hit 17 fours.

The Root-Brook stand of 454 was England's highest in Tests, eclipsing the 411-run fourth wicket partnership by Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against the West Indies at Birmingham in 1957.

It is also the fourth highest partnership in Test cricket history.

Women's T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies Thrash Bangladesh By 8 Wickets

Off-spinner Karishma Ramharack starred with an impressive four-wicket haul as West Indies cantered to an eight-wicket victory against Bangladesh in the women's T20 World Cup in Sharjah on Thursday. After restricting Bangladesh to 103 for 8, courtesy Ramharack's fine bowling spell of 4/17 from her four overs, the West Indies overhauled the target with as many as 43 balls to spare. Captain Hayley Matthews (34) and Stafanie Taylor (27 retired hurt) shared 52 runs for the opening wicket before Deandra Dottin made a quickfire 19 not out off just 7 balls with the help of two sixes.

West Indies scored 104 for 2 in 12.5 overs, to notch their second win in three matches and keep themselves afloat for a semifinal spot.

Earlier, put in to bat, Bangladesh were going strong at 58 for 2 at the end of the first 10 overs but they could never accelerate from there. Instead, they lost six wickets in the second half of their innings for the addition of just 45 runs.

Captain Nigar Sultana top-scored for Bangladesh with a 44-ball 39 but she did not get enough support from her batting colleagues.

Bangladesh could hit just two boundaries in the second 10 overs of their innings.

This was Bangladesh's second loss in three matches.

"Against A Better Team...": Hardik Served Brutal Reminder After BAN Heroics

Indian cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya impressed with both bat and ball as the Rohit Sharma-led side beat Bangladesh in the first T20I encounter in Gwalior on Sunday. Hardik slammed an unbeaten 39 off just 16 deliveries and recorded bowling figures of 1/26 to emerge as the top performer for the Indian cricket team. Hardik's show earned him a lot of praise from both fans and experts but former India fast bowler RP Singh believes that Bangladesh are not the right opponents to gauge his progress.

“Bangladesh team ko leke kisi ka true form judge karna, mujhe lagta hai itna sahi soch nahi hai. (I think using a performance against Bangladesh to judge a player's form is not right). The way they are playing, it is not at the highest level at the moment,” RP Singh, an expert for Jio Cinema, told the media.

“Hardik did well, he is capable of doing things like that. But using a performance against this team as a criterion in my opinion is not right. Do that maybe against a better team or in a better competition.”

Besides his batting, Hardik also provides a huge support to the bowling department with his role as a fast bowler. RP Singh pointed out that it was good that he bowled his entire quota of four overs in the match against Bangladesh and hailed it as a positive sign for Rohit Sharma and Co.

“What is good to see is that Hardik Pandya is bowling four overs. There was always a question as to whether he can bowl his full quota or not but he is doing that well now. His batting was always good, where he has improved is in his bowling and fitness. Performance solely Bangladesh team ko dekh ke mujhe nahi lagta hume excited hone chahiye. There are a lot of real tests still to come,” he added.

On Harmanpreet's Injury Update Ahead Of T20 WC vs SL, Mandhana Says This

India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana on Tuesday said skipper Harmanpreet Kaur will be leading the side against Sri Lanka in the Women's T20 World Cup, having got retired hurt in the previous game due to discomfort in her neck. Harmanpreet had walked off the field when she was batting on 29 against Pakistan on Sunday. India won that game by six wickets but still face early elimination from the tournament following the loss to New Zealand in their opener. "She (Harman) is doing fine and she will be fine for tomorrow," Mandhana told reporters.

However, there is no clarity over the fitness status of all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar who missed the Pakistan game. "Pooja, I think the medical team is still working on her. So, the update will come only tomorrow during the match. But yeah, I don't think I can say anything at the moment," said Mandhana.

Conditions different from our expectations

Mandhana, the best batter in the side, has failed to get going thus far on the slow wickets of the UAE where stroke making has proved to be extremely tough.

India face Sri Lanka on Wednesday, a team that stunned them in the Asia Cup final not so long ago. They are yet to play Australia and their hopes of making the semifinals hang by a thread.

India chased down 106 in 18.5 overs against Pakistan, mindful of the run rate factor in the business end of the tournament.

"It (run rate) definitely was last match, but as I said, the conditions are a lot different to what you expect as a batter so you are probably thinking to get that run rate high and also you firstly you have to win the match first that's the first priority for us," said Mandhana.

"So, it's a balance between trying to find out what's the best for the team. Of course, you know in the last match I couldn't like I started off fine but then later on I consumed a few dot balls which was a little irritating for me...

"...but yeah having said that as batters we have to be really smart we can't we can't just go out there thinking that oh we are going to take on this bowling lineup and we are just going to cruise because of course the conditions and the outfield is a lot different," she said.

Mandhana said conditions in the tournament have been different from their expectations when asked about Harmanpreet going back to number four against Pakistan after batting at three against New Zealand.

"Definitely the wicket condition, the ground conditions are a lot different to what we thought when we came here. That also is a big consideration (in deciding batter order)," she said.

"The conditions, I don't see any except the New Zealand match, we haven't seen any team go over 140 in the whole tournament, 135-140, be it a day game or a night game, says a lot about the conditions," she added.
