"Injury Can Happen To" Jasprit Bumrah: Ex-India Star On Need For Depth

India must focus on increasing the bench strength of their pace attack in 2024 as the Centurion Test exposed chinks in that department, reckons former pacer Irfan Pathan. Mohammed Shami's absence was felt badly in the heavy loss to South Africa in the opening Test of the two-match series in the Rainbow Nation last week.

Jasprit Bumrah, who did not get the support from the likes of Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna in the first Test, is also injury prone. Speaking to Star Sports on areas India need to improve in the new year, Pathan said: "India need to prepare a good fast bowling unit in 2024. We saw what happened in South Africa, the back ups were not ready. Shami was missed.

"If god forbid, something happens to Bumrah as we have seen in the past, injury can happen to him. If we don't prepare a big pool, we won't get quality pacers like them (Bumrah, Shami). You need to have 7-8 pacers ready for the highest level," he said.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar wants the Indian team to have the right blend of youth and experience.

"The biggest focus should be on having a good blend of youth and experience. Because that is always something that comes in handy. You need to have a wise cool head to temper the excitement of the younger blood," said Gavaskar.

India must also prepare leaders to take over from Rohit Sharma in due time, added Pathan.

"Leadership is another area we need to focus on. We need to have 2-3 leaders ready as this year we can see many changes. India did very well under Kohli in Test cricket for five years. He led from the front.

"Same with Rohit who led us to the World Cup final and we won Asia Cup under him. We need to groom leaders like them," added Pathan.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain picked an Indian superstar and former Pakistan skipper as the ones who will have a great 2024. In a video posted by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Nasser revealed his picks to be Virat Kohli and Babar Azam. "My first one is a megastar and there is no doubt about it. Virat Kohli. Obviously, he had a fantastic 2023 and World Cup. Amid all the records he broke and the attention, we did not focus on how well he was batting. Technically, I have never seen Virat bat as well like that. The sound of the bat, that innings against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, I can name about five innings where he was getting in a good position. That is a good sign for Virat, India and Virat fans. It means that he is in a good mental space and his game is in good order," said Hussain in the video.

Overall in eight Tests this year, Virat scored 671 runs at an average of 55.61, with two centuries and two fifties in 12 innings. His best score was 186.

In 27 ODIs this year, Virat scored 1,377 runs at an average of 72.47 and a strike rate of 99.13, with six centuries and eight fifties in just 24 innings. His best score was 166.

Finally, in all 35 international matches and 36 innings this year, Virat scored 2,048 runs at an average of 66.06, with eight centuries and 10 fifties in 36 innings.

Talking about Babar, Nasser said that the Pakistan side needs their former skipper to score big in the year which will also see the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 being held in the West Indies and the USA in June. Pakistan reached the finals last time in 2022 but lost to England.

"Another one, they are often compared. Babar Azam. I think it is a massive year for him and Pakistan. He has given up captaincy, that may be the weight off his shoulders. The biggest thing he can do for Pakistan cricket is get shed load of runs. They need him to get runs. There will be a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. They got to the finals last time. They will need their ex-skipper to put in a real performance," said Nasser.

"Not A Great Coach If...": Langer On How Owner Convinced Him For LSG Job

Former Australia opening batter Justin Langer will start his the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 following his appointment as head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Langer will replace Andy Flower who has joined Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as head coach for the upcoming season. Under Flower, LSG reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since the franchise joined the league in 2022. Meanwhile, Langer was the head coach of the Australian team between 2018 and 2022, before being replaced by Andre McDonald.

During his tenure, Australia retained the Ashes on English soil after 18 years in 2019. Langer also led them to a maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021.

Ahead of the upcoming IPL season, Langer has revealed how LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka convinced hin to take the coachin role. He also labelled Goenka someone with great sales man skills.

"Well, it was so funny because I was here in Perth and I received a text message asking me if I had any interest in coaching in the IPL. It was from Vinay, telling me that the owner Sanjiv was in London at the same time and would I be interested in having a coffee with him. And I thought 'Well, I have got nothing to lose' and I went and met the boss," said Langer in an interview on LSG's offical Twitter account.

"From there, we had a very nice conversation. He is a really good sales man, the boss, because the last thing he said to me was 'you know Justin, you have had a great playing career, you have had a very good coaching career until now. But, you can't consider yourself a great coach until you have won the IPL. I was like 'oh, good sales man skills. I like that boss, man'.

"We had some conversations after that. We continue to have good conversations. I am thrilled to be the head coach of this franchise," Langer added.

LSG will also be without their mentor Gautam Gambhir who has joined KKR ahead of the new season.
