BCCI Asks Delhi Capitals To "Avoid" Rishabh Pant Jersey Gesture: Report

Injured Delhi Capitals regular captain Rishabh Pant is likely to watch the team's first home game against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday from the Feroz Shah Kotla stands. He might also sit in the dug-out if the franchise can secure requisite permission from the BCCI's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU). "Rishabh has always been an integral part of Delhi Capitals. There is a high possibility that he will be present for the season's first home game against GT on Tuesday. He will definitely be in the team owner's box but if ACSU allows, he might also sit for some time in the team dug-out," an IPL source privy to the development in the Capitals' camp told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Pant met with a horrific car accident last December which has ruled him out of competitive cricket for a considerable period of time. He has undergone a surgery on his right knee and has just started walking and doing his rehabilitation.

BCCI "not very happy" with DC's jersey gesture in 1st match

In the opening game against Lucknow Super Giants, the DC team had hung their skipper's jersey No. 17 on the roof of the dug-out as a gesture that he is "always with the team in spirit".

However, an IPL source told PTI that it has been made clear from the BCCI's end that such a gesture seemed a "bit over the top" and was at one level "uncalled for".

"It seemed a bit over the top. Such a gesture is reserved in case of ultimate tragedy or retirement. In this case, it was neither. Rishabh is well and truly on his way to recovery faster than one expected. So while it was done with a noble intention, it is learnt that BCCI has politely told the franchise to avoid such gesture in future," the IPL source said.

It is understood that it was head coach Ricky Ponting's idea to display Pant's jersey from the dug-out.

Pant's jersey No 17 to be inscribed on every jersey during one game

The Delhi Capitals will be honouring Pant by inscribing his jersey number on all the players during one of the games when the team will wear a different colour. However, the jersey number will be inscribed in one corner and it will not be an infringement with the players' individual jersey numbers.

"Every season, DC wears a different jersey during one particular game. In that game, everyone will have Pant's jersey number inscribed on their jerseys. However there is specific rule for logo and it will be a small inscription in one corner," the source said.

IPL 2023: A Look At Updated Points Table After First Round Of Matches

Rajasthan Royals lead the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 table after the first round of matches thanks to their comprehensive victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. RR rode brilliant performances from Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal to guide RR to a 72-run win in Hyderabad. As a result, they have a brilliant net run rate of +3.6000. In second place, Lucknow Super Giants also have two points, but their net run rate is currently +2.500. Royal Challengers Bangalore (+1.981), Gujarat Titans (+0.514) and Punjab Kings (+0.438) complete the Top 5 in the points table, and they all have 2 points from one game.

The bottom half of the table has Kolkata Knight Riders in sixth position, Chennai Super Kings in seventh and Mumbai Indians in eighth with –1.981. Delhi Capitals are struggling at the ninth position but Sunrisers Hyderabad are last in the table with a disappointing net run rate of –3.600.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis dished out a chasing masterclass with a 148-run opening partnership as Royal Challengers Bangalore made a sensational start to their IPL campaign with a comprehensive eight-wicket demolition of Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Sent into bat, Tilak Varma smashed a scintillating 84 off 46 balls to single-handedly power MI to 171 for seven but Kohli and du Plessis made mockery of the total, slamming twin fifties as RCB romped home with as many as 22 balls to spare.

Chasing 172, Kohli (82 not out) and Du Plessis (73) produced an exhibition of sublime stroke-making, plundering 10 boundaries and as many maximums during their near flawless 89-ball stand.

After du Plessis perished in the 15th over, Kohli completed the job, hitting a four and six off Arshad Khan to knock off the winning runs to hand MI their 11th consecutive defeat in their first match of the season.

The second round of games will kick off with Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants on Monday.

Aiden Markram Onslaught Takes South Africa To Verge Of World Cup

Aiden Markram hit 175 off 126 balls as South Africa took a giant step towards automatic qualification for the Cricket World Cup with a 146-run win over the Netherlands in the third one-day international at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday. "We did exactly what we wanted to do," said South Africa captain Temba Bavuma at the after-match presentation. South Africa climbed into eighth place in the Super League table, going above the West Indies and improving their net run rate with a second emphatic win in three days.

Ireland are the only team who could squeeze South Africa out of automatic qualification for the World Cup but they will need to beat Bangladesh 3-0 in a series in England next month to draw level on points.

Ireland will also need to improve their net run rate.

"In terms of the points and qualification, we've done ourselves justice," said Bavuma.

"In the cricket as well, there were a lot of positives in the batting and the bowling."

South Africa completed a 2-0 win in a series which was halted because of a Covid scare after the first game was rained off in November 2021.

The West Indies will have to play in a qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June and July to decide the final two teams that will play in the World Cup in India in October and November.

Markram hit 17 fours and seven sixes in scoring his first one-day international century.

He and David Miller (91) set up a South African total of 370 for eight with a fifth wicket partnership of 199 off 118 balls.

Netherlands made a spirited attempt to keep up with the required run rate but lost their last five wickets for seven runs to be bowled out for 224.

Fast bowler Sisanda Magala claimed his first international five-wicket haul, taking five for 43, with four of his victims being bowled.

Left-hander Musa Ahmed received two painful early blows on the chest and shoulder from express fast bowler Anrich Nortje but went on to make top score of 61, his first international half-century.

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards said his team had matched South Africa for periods during both games.

"Three-hundred and seventy was always going to be tough," he said.

"We kept up with the rate but we needed someone to get a big score like Aiden."

The Dutch will also play in the World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe alongside the hosts, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Scotland and Oman.

The three remaining spots in the 10-team event are still to be decided.
