Watch: Gambhir's Reaction Stumps Fans As Rinku Delivers Game-Changing Over

With 9 runs required from the final 2 overs, Sri Lanka had one foot into a victorious result in the 3rd T20I against India on Tuesday, especially as they had 6 wickets in hand. But, India head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav stumped everyone as they handed over the ball to Rinku Singh, a part-time bowler. However, what happened next was even more surprising. Rinku didn't just keep the flow of runs under check, conceding 3 runs in the 19th over, but also dismissed two Lankan batters.

Seeing Rinku deliver an exemplary performance, even coach Gambhir had a big smile on his face. The visual left fans on social media amazed, as seeing the former India opener in a happy mood isn't as common.

After Rinku kept India in the game, skipper Suryakumar Yadav took the responsibility of defending 6 runs in the 20th over. He conceded 5 runs, forcing the game into the Super Over, where India comfortably emerged victorious.

As for the match, chasing a target of 138 on a rank turner, Sri Lanka were cruising along at 110 for 1 in 15.1 over before they once again lost their way -- third time in four days to be tied at 137 for 8.

In the latest instance, the hosts lost seven wickets for 27 runs in a space of 4.5 overs.

Having miraculously lost their way in the regulation game, the Indians were way more buoyed in the Super Over where Washington Sundar got both wickets giving away only two runs and then the captain fittingly completed the proceedings with a first ball sweep shot.

No amount of credit is enough for the new Indian leader, who came into bowl in the 20th over with six runs to defend and got two wickets in his first two balls.

This was after Rinku, another part-timer, rolled his arm over for the first time in a T20I to bag a couple of wickets, including that of Kusal Perera (46) when all Lanka needed was 9 runs in 12 balls.

The 19th over cost India only three runs and suddenly the match that looked all but over after Khaleel Ahmed's profligate 18th over with six wides came into life.

No 'Mega Auction' Ahead Of IPL 2025? SRK Gets Big Support From Kavya Maran

Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan argued against hosting a mega auction ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 during the IPL owners' meeting at the BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday, according to a report by Cricbuzz. The report claimed that the Bollywood superstar wanted BCCI to conduct a small auction and that led to a heated argument with Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia. However, SRK has found support in Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran. In a statement released to Cricbuzz after the meeting, Maran spoke against holding a IPL mega auction.

"It takes a lot of time to build a squad and as discussed it also takes quite a bit of time and investment for the younger players to mature. It has taken Abhishek Sharma three years to become consistent with his performances. You would agree that there are many such examples in other teams too," she said.

Kolkata Knight Riders were the IPL 2024 champions while Sunrisers Hyderabad finished runners-up.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said it will take forward the recommendations of all ten IPL franchise owners to the tournament's governing council before finalising player regulations ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

The BCCI had called for a meeting with all ten franchise owners at its headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday evening, where thoughts related to mega auctions, player retention and impact player rule among other issues were discussed.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday organized a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises on various subjects pertaining to the upcoming season of the TATA IPL.”

“The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming.

The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations,” said BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.

Debate Over Having Mega Auction Dominates IPL Owners' Meeting With BCCI

Whether to have a mega auction for ahead of the upcoming season was the major point of contention in the meeting between the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the 10 franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The meeting of the IPL teams' owners with the BCCI at the latter's headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday night was inconclusive and with no consensus emerging on the matter. A report in Cricbuzz claimed quite a few people are against holding mega auctions, including Kolkata Knight Riders' owner, actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan, who was fiercely in favour of not holding one. This development was confirmed by Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal to reporters in Mumbai, who added that the house is also divided on the Impact Player rule.

"A consensus on the mega auction - whether to have it or not - will eventually determine the number of retentions. If the BCCI decides to do away with the mega auctions, there may not be a requirement for retentions at all," the report further said.

The other point of discussion was the number of retentions and there was no consensus amongst ten owners on this issue also.

"At one stage, the KKR owner was also believed to be engaged in a heated argument with Ness Wadia, the co-owner of Punjab Kings, over a number of retentions; Shah Rukh was in favour of major retentions while Wadia is believed to be against too many of them," added the report.

Asked about his opinion over the Impact Player rule, which received a lot of flak from players and coaches in IPL 2024, Jindal told reporters in Mumbai that though the ruling gives chances to a lot of new players, he is not in favour of it as it hinders the growth of genuine all-rounders in Indian cricket.

Other IPL owners who arrived in Mumbai for the meeting include Kiran Kumar Grandhi, co-owner of Delhi Capitals, Sanjiv Goenka (Lucknow Super Giants), Rupa Gurunath (Chennai Super Kings), Kavya Maran (Sunrisers Hyderabad).

Rajasthan Royals had co-owner Manoj Badale, CEO Jake Luck McCrum and Executive Chairman Ranjit Barthakur in attendance, so as Amit Soni (Gujarat Titans) and Prathmesh Mishra (Royal Challengers Bengaluru). A few owners attended the meeting via video conferencing, which included the Ambani family of Mumbai Indians.

Former India Cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad Dies After Long Battle With Cancer

Former India cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, who has served the game in different capacities after his retirement as a player, died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 71. Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. Gaekwad, who was also a former India coach and national selector, was undergoing treatment for blood cancer at the King's College Hospital in London before returning back to the country last month. The BCCI gave Rs 1 crore for Gaekwad's treatment and members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team also did their bit to help the cricketer.

Gaekwad has also played 205 first-class matches in a career spanning 22 years.

He later took over as coach of the Indian team. His glorious moments came at Sharjah in 1998 and in a Test match at Ferozeshah Kotla in Delhi when Anil Kumble took all 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to offer his condolences.

"Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a gifted player and an outstanding coach. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," PM Modi tweeted.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah also paid his tribute to the late cricketer.

"My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Aunshuman Gaekwad. Heartbreaking for the entire cricket fraternity. May his soul rest in peace," Shah wrote on 'X'.

A gritty opening batter, he was known for his dogged defense with a very high back lift. Between 1974 and 1984, he was involved in the game of musical chair with Chetan Chauhan for the role of second opener to partner Sunil Gavaskar in the Indian team.

A genial personality, he scored a double hundred against Imran Khan's Pakistan, which was one of the slowest double tons of that time. The match was played at Jalandhar.

A bespectacled opener, Gaekwad's finest hour came while facing a young Michael Holding and Wayne Daniel at Sabina Park in Jamaica in the 1976 series.

Holding's beamer hit him on the ear and as he lay smeared in blood, home team supporters were shouting from the tree top "Kill him Maaan..Kill him Mikey", something Gavaskar termed as Barbarism.

Later he was coach of the Indian team between 1998 and 1999 and Kumble's 10-for at Kotla happened with him in charge of the team.

Young Harbhajan Singh made his Test debut under him and always spoke with reverence about 'Angshu sir' for the manner in which he carried himself.

He also served as national selector, headed the Baroda Cricket Association and just before he fell ill, he was the BCCI Apex Council member as an ICA representative.

Cricket legends such as Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, former India coach Ravi Shastri, Clive Lloyd, Andy Roberts, Farokh Engineer, ex-India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar, BCCI president Roger Binny, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Karsan Ghavri, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and actor Nana Patekar have all shared encouraging words to cheer up Gaekwad before he breathed his last.

Manu Reveals She "Made Fake Profile To Defend Sindhu", Shuttler Responds

Shooter Manu Bhaker continues her sensational run in the ongoing Paris Olympics. The star markswoman first clinched a historic bronze in the women's 10m air pistol on July 28. She became the first woman shooter from India to win an Olympic medal. Two days later, Manu bagged the same honour in the mixed team 10m air pistol event, becoming the first-ever athlete from independent India to have won two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. Manu has now become an inspiration for the budding athletes with her achievements and her recent revelation in an interview further lifts her stature.

"I have always known the greats in Indian sports history. In my time, I have always known (PV) Sindhu and Neeraj (Chopra). I have always appreciated them for their hardwork. There was this one time when I made a fake profile to defend Sindhu. Some haters commented and I got so triggered that I made a fake account to defend her on that," Manu Bhaker told Sportstar.

Reacting to Bhaker's revelation on X, Sindhu wrote: "Haha what a sweetheart!!! Welcome to the 2 Olympic medal club Manu!! Way to go."

It was twice as nice for Manu Bhaker as she clinched a history-making 10m air pistol mixed team bronze with Sarabjot Singh in the Olympic Games, joining the league of India's greatest athletes in a span of 72 hours by being the driving force of the country's campaign so far.

A good 124 years after British-Indian Norman Pritchard won silver medals in 200m sprint and 200m hurdles, incidentally also in a Paris edition of the Games, Bhaker became the first athlete in post-independent India to snare two individual medals in the same Olympics.

Bhaker combined with an equally unruffled Sarabjot in the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze and gave a superb demonstration of how to control nerves in a high-pressure situation.

The Indian pair defeated the Korean duo of Lee Wonoho and Oh Yeh Jin 16-10. It just added to Bhaker's growth story as she completely wiped off the memories of a horrendous Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020 where her pistol malfunctioned leaving her in tears.

And it's not over yet. She remains in contention for another podium finish -- in the 25m sports pistol event, the qualification for which will take place on August 2.

While it is a massive achievement for women's sport in the country, Tuesday's medal was also redemption for Sarabjot, who had failed to make the men's 10m air pistol final, finishing ninth on Saturday with a score of 577.

"Actually we can't control (what the rivals will do), we can do what is in our hand, me and my partner thought let's just try our best and we will keep fighting till the end," said Bhaker.

Ambala shooter Sarabjot, who passed through a difficult phase trying to come to terms with the disappointment of the individual competition just three days back, said he was under a lot of pressure to perform.

"I'm feeling good, the game was very tough and there was a lot of pressure, I am very happy," said the 22-year-old Sarabjot, who comes from a farming family.

Super Over Madness As IND Beat SL In 3rd T20I, Clinch Series 3-0

India defeated Sri Lanka via the Super Over in the inconsequential third and final T20I at Pallekele here on Tuesday to sweep the series 3-0. Kusal Perera (46, 34b) and Kusal Mendis (43, 41b) guided Lanka's chase of 138 before their innings fell apart in the familiar fashion at the business end. SL ended up at 137/8 after stipulated 20 overs, taking the match to Super Over. For India, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Rinku Singh and skipper Suryakumar Yadav took two wickets apiece. India needed just three runs to win in Super Over.

Earlier, SL bowlers produced a tidy effort to restrict India to a modest 137/9.

Spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana led the hosts' bowling, sharing five wickets between them, as only Shubman Gill showed some spunk with a 39 in the company of Riyan Parag (26).

Brief scores:

India: 137/9 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 39, Riyan Parag 26, Washington Sundar 25; Wanindu Hasaranga 2/29, Maheesh Theekshana 3/28) tied with Sri Lanka: 137/ 8 in 20 overs (Kusal Perera 46, Kusal Mendis 43; Washington Sundar 2/23, Rinku Singh 2/3, Suryakumar Yadav 1/5). India win in Super Over.

Bishnoi Reveals Gambhir's Priceless Advise Behind Sri Lanka Tour Heroics

No Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or Jasprit Bumrah, yet the Indian cricket team continues to march on, securing their second consecutive win of the 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Ravi Bishnoi, much like the first T20I, played an important role in the team's triumph in the second match. Speaking to media in the post-match press conference, Bishnoi only had positive things to say about India's new T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav who has marshalled his troops quite effectively in the island nation.

"They play spin really well, but I don't know what has happened to them. They collapsed between the middle overs, and they were known as a good spin-playing team, but I think something has gone wrong," Bishnoi said in the press conference after the 2nd T20I.

Bishnoi also revealed that both Suryakumar and Shubman Gill, India's vice-captain in T20Is, have backed him to the hilt.

"Suryakumar is doing great captaincy. I have played under him during the Australia series as well. He has been good. Shubman Gill's captaincy was also great. In Zimbabwe, he also did great as a captain. They always back me and as a bowler you cannot ask for anything more than this when the captain backs you. Suryakumar and Shubman have both backed me," Bishnoi said in the post-match press conference.

Bishnoi also shared a few words on India's new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who also worked with him at Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.

"I am sharing a great bond with Gautam Gambhir as he has been with LSG for two years. He has not asked me to change anything as such. He has told me to do what I am doing currently. His advice was useful to me earlier as well, and now too," Bishnoi said.

India now face Sri Lanka in the 3rd and final T20I of the series on Tuesday.

"I Don't Want To Be Captain, I Want To...": Suryakumar Makes Bold Statement

India captain Suryakumar Yadav, whose captaincy skills were on display during the first T20I against Sri Lanka, stated that he wants to classify himself as a leader and not as a captain. When Sri Lanka's opening duo of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis inflicted carnage in Pallekele, the 214-run total started turning into a comfortable chase for the hosts. Sri Lanka raced to 84/0 in the ninth over and looked well set to spoil the beginning of Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar's era.

With India fielding only five mainstay bowlers, Suryakumar was running out of options. In the ninth over, he brought Arshdeep Singh back into the thick of action, hoping for a breakthrough.

The young left-armer delivered and removed Mendis from the crease. The setback didn't stop Sri Lanka from retracting their aggressive approach.

However, Lankans were forced to take a step back after Suryakumar introduced Axar Patel in the 15th over. With the pitch offering turn, Axar weaved magic and dismissed Kusal Perera and set-batter Nissanka to take the game away from the hosts.

Suryakumar's captaincy skills were recognised and praised by former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan. However, Suryakumar wants to be more than a captain of the India T20I team.

"I... I don't want to be a captain; I want to be a leader. That's it. It felt good to see such good support here and in this country," Suryakumar said in a video posted by BCCI on X.

One of the key highlights of the game was Suryakumar handing the ball to Riyan Parag. The youngster who failed to deliver with the bat chipped in with valuable contributions with the ball.

He expelled the spinning track, picked up the spots for his delivery and bagged a three-wicket haul while giving away just five runs in his 1.2 overs.

The 33-year-old shed light on what led to him handing the ball to Parag at the crucial juncture of the game.

"This Riyan Parag can be special because I have seen him bowl in the IPL as well as in the nets. And I also said on the PC that he has an X-factor," Suryakumar said.

India went on to successfully defend their total by restricting Sri Lanka to 170. After going 1-0 in the series, India took an unassailable lead in the second T20I on Sunday.

Rafael Nadal Says Novak Djokovic 'Clear Favourite' In Olympics Blockbuster

Rafael Nadal insists Novak Djokovic will be the favourite when they clash at the Paris Olympics, after the Spaniard battled to victory over Marton Fucsovics in the first round on Sunday. Nadal had left his participation in the singles in doubt until the last minute because of a thigh injury, and was made to work hard for his 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory. The 38-year-old -- who has won 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles on the clay of Roland Garros -- believes old rival Djokovic will be favourite when they meet for the 60th time.

"Situations are completely different for him, for me. He's being very competitive. I was not being very competitive for the last two years, so in that case, I think probably he is the clear favourite," said Nadal, who holds an 8-2 head-to-head advantage over the Serb at Roland Garros.

"I'm going to try my best to bring the best to the court and then let's see how far I can go and how many problems I can create for him."

The latest chapter of a generation-defining rivalry, and perhaps the final act, will bring Nadal and Djokovic full circle -- the duo having met as teenagers in their very first meeting in the 2006 Roland Garros quarter-finals.

Outside round-robin matches in the season-ending ATP Finals, their second-round encounter at the Olympics will be the earliest they have ever met at a tournament.

"It has always been super special to play against Novak, no doubt about that," said Nadal. "But the difference is normally we have been playing for finals or for semi-finals.

"Of course, it's an Olympics... every match is super special. But it's true that at the same time, almost every single match that I played against Novak, I arrive at it with a different situation that I am today.

"So that makes the match more difficult for me and more unpredictable. But, I always have hope, I always believe."

'Fighting spirit'

Nadal, a singles gold medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and doubles champion at Rio four years later, is playing just his seventh tournament of 2024.

He reached the final in Bastad last weekend but suffered a setback in training on Wednesday, jeopardising his hopes of appearing at a fifth Olympics.

Nadal teamed up with Carlos Alcaraz in the doubles on Saturday, but he had his right thigh heavily bandaged as the pair won their first-round match in straight sets.

His leg sported similar strapping against Fucsovics, but Nadal said he was feeling "good". "Bit tired, of course. I mean, a long match, but at the same time... it was a good test," said Nadal.

"The good thing is I was able to play at a good level of tennis for a while. That always gives hope. And then (the) negative stuff is I was not able to hold that great level."

Fucsovics suggested the Spaniard still had what it takes to beat Djokovic, who leads the career head-to-head 30-29.

"He was fighting until the end, so his fighting spirit is still at the top still, but he's not at his best playing level," said Fucsovics.

"But if he has a good day he can beat him (Djokovic) still."

Big Concern For India? Shubman Gill Misses 2nd T20I Against SL - Here's Why

Indian cricket team star batter Shubman Gill missed the second T20I encounter against Sri Lanka due to neck spasm on Sunday. Sanju Samson was included in the playing XI in place of Gill and Suryakumar confirmed the reason behind Gill's absence at the toss. "Gill misses out as he woke up with a neck spasm, Samson comes in," Indian cricket team  captain Suryakumar Yadav said. Sanju failed to take advantage of the chance as he was dismissed for a duck by spinner Maheesh Theekshana.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Suryakumar Yadav displayed their wide array of strokes as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead, winning the rain-curtailed second T20I by seven wickets with nine balls to spare.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and new captain Suryakumar couldn't have asked for a better start to their new roles as the Indian team played like true T20 World Champions outplaying Sri Lanka in all departments.

Despite Shubman Gill's absence due to neck spasm and another failure in the format for the ever-hyped Sanju Samson (0), Jaiswal (30 off 15 balls) and Suryakumar (26 off 12 balls) didn't even break a sweat in their short but tricky chase of 78 in 8 overs after another fine effort by bowlers had restricted Sri Lanka to 161 for 9.

Just when Maheesh Theekshana looked dangerous getting Samson with a carrom ball and squaring up Surya with a doosra, the Mumbai duo decided to bring the sweep shot -- both conventional and reverse -- out of the closet.

The strategy was to not allow Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga's deliveries to deviate off the surface and create confusion.

Instead, the India batters used their reach to good effect and smother the turn. They added 39 in 3.1 overs and by the time Surya and Jaiswal were dismissed, they had hit seven fours and three sixes between them.

It was left to Hardik Pandya (22 not out off 9 balls) and Rishabh Pant (2 not out) to complete the formalities in 6.3 overs and render the final match of the series on Tuesday inconsequential.

Earlier, Surya called right and his bowlers did a repeat act on successive days with the home team losing as many as seven wickets for 31 runs in their last 30 balls after being comfortably placed at 130 for 2 in 15 overs.

Despite scoring 80 in the first 10 overs and in a position to accelerate, Charith Asalanka's side lost its way, managing just 81 runs in the back-10 as Pandya's (2/23 in 2 overs) change of pace and Ravi Bishnoi's (3/26 in 4 overs) fast googlies did the trick.

Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh also chipped in with two wickets each.

"We Were Fortunate...": Suryakumar's Honest Admission On Win Over Sri Lanka

Having made a winning start to his journey as India's new T20I captain on Saturday, Suryakumar Yadav said he always thought that the game against Sri Lanka was under control despite a good start by the hosts as there was hardly any dew to make life difficult for his bowlers. Chasing a target of 214, Sri Lanka were cruising along at 149 for 2 before losing eight wickets for 21 runs to lose the opening T20I by 43 runs. "We were fortunate that there was no dew. The way we played in the World Cup, that reminded us that the game was still too far," Suryakumar, who also won the 'Player of the Match' award for his 26-ball-58, said. He praised the Sri Lankans for a good batting effort but said he always knew that the track would slow down as the game progressed.

"They were playing a good brand of cricket from ball one. They were keeping the tempo, credit goes to them. We know how the wicket plays in the night."

His opposite number Charith Asalanka felt that the bowlers didn't do well in the Powerplay but pulled back towards the end to restrict India to 213 for 7 when the total could have easily gone up to 240.

"We were not up to the mark in the powerplay, but in the latter part, we came back pretty strong. Some stage, we thought they might get to 240, we did well," he said.

About being all out for 170 after being 149 for 2, the Lankan skipper did express his disappointment.

"Little disappointed with the way the middle-order batted, we could have done better. (On the balance of his side) It's an experiment, this is the way we should go in the future."

1st T20I: Surya-Gambhir Regime Starts With 43-Run Win Against Sri Lanka

New captain Suryakumar Yadav led from the front with a breathtaking half-century as India comfortably out-batted Sri Lanka by 43 runs in the opening T20 International to start the Gautam Gambhir era with a victory in Pallekele on Saturday. It was India skipper Suryakumar's 26-ball 58 and a 74-run opening blitzkrieg in just six overs between openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill that took India to 213 for 7. Despite a fine batting effort from the Sri Lankans till the 15th over, the Indian bowlers did well enough to bowl out the home team for 170 in 19.2 overs.

The Indian bowlers did remarkably well towards the back-end, utilising the slowness of the track to provide the team 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The spinners -- Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and rookie Riyan Parag -- snared six of the 10 wickets.

From 149 for 2, Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for just 21 runs as the final quarter of the match was dominated by the Indian bowlers after a listless first 15. Kusal Mendis (45 off 27 balls) and Pathum Nissanka (79 off 47 balls) were not as brutal as their Indian counterparts but close enough to increase the creases on new coach Gautam Gambhir's forehead as they didn't spare any bad balls, getting at least one if not two boundaries per over.

The 84-run opening stand was finally broken by Arshdeep Singh when Mendis couldn't pick the slower one.

However Nissanka didn't lose tempo as Hardik Pandya (0/41 in 4 overs) was clearly not in his element, as he consistently missed his length, making it difficult for the new skipper to look for options.

Pandya, who was recently bypassed for national captaincy, is always more comfortable with a good sixth bowling option, which wasn't there.

Axar Patel (2/38 in 4 overs) was very flat at the onset but got the breakthroughs when it mattered the most, bringing all his experience into effect.

Ravi Bishnoi (1/37 in 4 overs) is slowly becoming very predictable with hardly any leg-breaks to surprise the batters.

The right handers knew that the deliveries will come into them and they got inside the line to out-manoeuvre the wrist spinner.

The absence of Jasprit Bumrah was evident and it was only the scoreboard pressure that helped the 'Men in Blue' prevail in the end once Axar's arm ball got rid of Nissanka. He also got Kusal Perera (20) in the same over as the match decisively tilted in India's favour.

Once Bishnoi ended the spell with rival skipper Charith Asalanka's wicket, India completely gained control.

Skipper Suryakumar took a calculative punt of giving inexperienced Riyan Parag (3/5 in 1.2 overs) the 17th over and he removed Kamindu Mendis to justify his skipper's faith. The ever-improving Arshdeep (2/24 in 3 overs) also got his share of scalps as Riyan then finished the proceedings without much ado. Earlier, Suryakumar was swift and brutal in equal measure on his first day in office as the Indian top-order plundered Sri Lankan bowling to post a commanding total after being put into bat.

In his first match as permanent skipper of India's T20 team, Suryakumar made a firm statement with a sparkling knock, maintaining his aggressive approach that made him the world's premier batter.

While Suryakumar was at his dominant best while hitting eight fours and two sixes en route his 20th half-century, the foundation for a big score was laid by young stars Jaiswal (41 off 20 balls) and Gill (34 off 15 balls) in a 74-run opening stand in the powerplay.

Rishabh Pant (49 off 33 balls) struggled initially but did well to end just one short of half-century with some audacious shots both in-front and behind the square.

If Jaiswal's approach was a bit on muscular side, Gill showed his artistry, bleeding the Lankans with thousand cuts.

The refreshing part was Gill's approach in the very first game under new coach where he didn't exactly employ the safety first approach.

Gill (34 off 15 balls) was out playing one shot too many off the final ball in the powerplay, but by then India had scored 74, their highest total in first six overs this season.

Jaiswal failed to read Wanindu Hasaranga's well disguised googly as the southpaw played for the conventional leg-break, bringing in skipper Surya and Pant together.

Suryakumar played his customary inside the line shot over fine leg for six and four. He was lucky to survive as he was also dropped once trying to repeat the shot and also got a four in the process.

The team century came in 8.4 overs as the Indian skipper didn't let the momentum drop even as Pant was struggling to middle the ball.

Once Suryakumar was adjudged leg before to a Matheesha Pathirana yorker, the final few overs saw Pant finally breaking shackles as a helicopter shot off Asitha landed into the stands and it was followed by a boundary.

Bumrah No Longer India's Test Vice-Captain? Report Names Rohit's New Deputy

Shubman Gill is all set to replace Jasprit Bumrah as the Indian cricket team vice-captain in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, according to a report by Revsportz. The youngster was reportedly as Rohit Sharma's deputy in white-ball cricket over the past few games and it looks like Gill will also be given an extremely important role in red-ball cricket. Gill is currently considered as one of the big contenders to take over the captaincy in all formats and this move can be a huge step in that direction. Coming to the series against Bangladesh, the opening Test will be played on September 19 in Chennai, while the second encounter will be played on September 27 at Green Park in Nagpur.

Gill will also be the vice-captain in the both the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, the newly-appointed T20I captain, asserted that India will continue to play the aggressive brand of cricket which hallmarked the regime of his predecessor Rohit Sharma.

Under Rohit, who retired from T20Is after the World Cup triumph in the Americas, India played a template-changing attacking game from last year's ODI showpiece at home.

“The same train will go ahead; only the engine has changed and the bogies remain unchanged,” Suryakumar said on the eve of the first of the three T20Is against Sri Lanka here.

“Nothing changes; the brand of cricket remains the same. It (the captaincy role) doesn't change anything. It has given me an added responsibility. It is good that now I can do a 'walk the talk',” he added.

For that, Suryakumar said he wanted to tread the path that Rohit had set during his captaincy stint.

"What I have learnt from Rohit is that he was always a leader on the ground and off it,” he said.

“He was not just a captain — there is a lot of difference between the two. He was a leader who stood in the middle of the group and showed people the way.

"How to play T20 cricket and how to win a tournament? That is what I have learnt from him," he elaborated.

West Indies' Treble Strike Rocks England In Third Test

Jason Holder produced a fine all-round display as the West Indies took three late wickets, including both England openers with successive deliveries, in a stirring fightback on Friday's opening day of the third Test at Edgbaston. Holder's 59 helped turn the West Indies' 115-5 into a total of 282 all out as they looked to restore some pride, having already lost this three-match series at 2-0 down. And the towering all-rounder then held two fine slip catches as England slumped to 38-3 at stumps, a deficit of 244 runs.

Zak Crawley fell for eight when he edged a loose drive off fast bowler Jayden Seales, with Holder holding a sharp chance to his left at second slip.

England were now 29-1 off four overs exactly and next ball Crawley's opening partner, Ben Duckett, played on to Alzarri Joseph.

England had sent in Mark Wood as a nightwatchman after Crawley's exit but he fell for a duck when edging Seales low to Holder.

Seales had figures of 2-19 in four overs at the close, with Ollie Pope and Joe Root -- who both made hundreds in England's 241-run win in the second Test at Trent Bridge -- set to resume on Saturday.

Earlier, West Indies were well-placed 76-0 after captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss beneath blue skies on a good batting pitch.

But they then suffered yet another of the collapses that had been their undoing in the first two Tests as five wickets fell either side of lunch.

Holder, Da Silva hold firm

Former captain Holder, however, found an ally in Joshua Da Silva (49) as the duo kept England at bay with a sixth-wicket partnership of 109 in 32 overs.

But the remainder of the innings fell away tamely, with fast bowler Gus Atkinson taking 4-67 in 20 overs and Chris Woakes 3-59 in 18 on his Warwickshire home ground.

After a watchful beginning, Brathwaite drove Woakes for two fours in the fifth over.

Mikyle Louis provided sound support as the 31-year-old Brathwaite, in his 92nd Test, completed a 70-ball fifty, including six fours.

But England hit back when Louis (26) fended at an Atkinson delivery that moved away to give wicketkeeper Jamie Smith a simple catch.

New batsman Kirk McKenzie struck three fours before, only half forward, he was clean bowled by a 91mph (146 kph) full-length delivery from express quick Mark Wood.

And to the last ball of the session, Alick Athanaze carelessly bottom-edged an attempted pull off Atkinson onto his stumps, leaving the West Indies 97-3 at lunch and Brathwaite unbeaten on 56.

West Indies would have wanted their skipper to go onto a hundred.

But instead he fell for 61 when, trying to pull Wood, he gloved the ball down the legside to Smith. Wood, unlucky to take just two wickets in the whole of the second Test, had 2-52 on Friday.

And 115-4 became 115-5 when Kavem Hodge, who made a maiden Test century at Trent Bridge, gifted his wicket when deliberately leaving a Woakes ball that hit the top of off stump.

But with the West Indies in danger of being bowled out on the opening day, Holder counter-attacked.

He slashed opposing all-rounder Stokes for four and struck 20-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who took a match-winning 5-41 at Trent Bridge, for several boundaries including a superb straight six over long-on.

Holder went on to a 92-ball fifty, also including six fours.

Da Silva, however, fell one shy of the landmark when caught behind off a good-length Woakes ball to leave the West Indies 224-6.

And Holder's innings ended when Atkinson flattened his off stump.

SL Edge Out Pakistan By 3 Wickets, To Face India In Women's Asia Cup Final

Skipper Chamari Athapaththu's diligent fifty propelled Sri Lanka to a thrilling three-wicket win over Pakistan in the second semifinal of the women's Asia Cup in Dambulla on Friday, setting up the title clash against India. In the first semifinal earlier, defending champions India had beaten Bangladesh by 10 wickets. The final will be played on Sunday. Athapaththu, who is the highest run-getter in the event with 223 runs, single-handedly guided the Lankans close to the target of 141, making a well-paced 63 off 48 balls (9x4, 1x6).

Her fifty and Anushka Sanjeevani's unbeaten 24 (22b, 1x4, 1x6) helped Lanka to reach 141 for 7 in 19.5 overs.

Kalisha Dilhari (17, 18 balls) helped Athapaththu milk 61 runs for the third wicket that gave Lanka a firm hold on the match.

Pakistan stayed in the fight through a brilliant spell by experienced left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal (4/16 off 4 overs) but she did not have much support from the other end as the hosts stumbled across the line.

Earlier, Pakistan relied on handy knocks by Muneeba Ali (37), Gull Feroza (25), skipper Nida Dar (23) and Fatima Sana (23 not out) to make 140 for four.

All of them got the starts but none of them converted it into a bigger score as Pakistan ended up with what eventually proved to be a total that was slightly below par.

Pakistan Great's "Kohli" Warning To BCCI Amid Champions Trophy Travel Row

Pakistan's right to host the ICC Champions Trophy has raised doubts over India's willingness to travel to the country. Due to the political differences between the two neighbouring nations, bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan has been suspended since 2013. If the reports are to be believed, the BCCI is unlikely to get travel clearance from the Indian government for the tournament in Pakistan. However, Pakistan's recent visit to India for the 2023 fifty-over World Cup has sparked discussions over a possible return in favour.

As per the initial Champions Trophy, the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will host all of India's matches, including the one against Pakistan.

There have also been rumours that the BCCI has propose a hybrid model similar to the one used for last year's Asia Cup when India's matches were held in Sri Lanka.

Amid the ongoing debate, former captain Younis Khan has urged for India to travel to Pakistan, as it is the "only thing left" in star batter Virat Kohli's career.

"Virat Kohli should come to Pakistan for 2025 Champions Trophy. It is our wish too. He should come and perform in Pakistan. I think the only thing left in Virat's career is to tour Pakistan and perform," Younis Khan to News24.

India last played a bilateral series away against Pakistan in 2006, two years before Kohli's international debut.

While the 35-year-old did play a series against Pakistan when the side toured India for a limited-overs tour in December 2012, Kohli is yet to play a Test against Pakistan.

According to a recent report, the PCB has left it up to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to convince the BCCI to send its team to Pakistan for the upcoming champions Trophy.

According to a PCB source, while the budget for the Champions Trophy was approved at the recent ICC meetings in Colombo, the schedule and format didn't come up for discussion at all.

"The PCB now has done what was required of it as hosts of the Champions Trophy. It has submitted the draft schedule and format for the event and also submitted budget for the event," a PCB insider said.

"It is now up to the ICC how soon they circulate, discuss and finalize the schedule of the Champions Trophy. The PCB for its part in the draft schedule has suggested hosting all of India's games in Lahore including a semi-final (if India qualifies) and final," he said.

KKR Connection Behind SKY Becoming T20I Captain? Ex-India Star's Big Take

It came as a surprise for everybody when the Board of Control for Cricket in India named Suryakumar Yadav as the captain for Sri Lanka T20Is, preferring the top-order batter over Hardik Pandya. Star all-rounder Hardik was the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team. He looked all set to take over the captaincy role in the format after Rohit Sharma callled time on his T20I career, but the management went ahead with Surya instead. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Hardik's consistent injuries, his workload management were the reasons that pushed the board to look beyond him for the captaincy role.

Agarkar added that Suryakumar's captaincy abilities and the feedback from players also played a big role in him being appointed the skipper in T20Is.

Amidst a lot of other rumours surrounding the new T20I captain's appointment, former India cricketer Pragyan Ojha has pointed out an old Kolkata Knight Riders connection between Suryakumar and newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir.

"I am quite sure that the selectors would have thought about it, but if you see, the T20 World Cup is in 2026. So with that they wanted someone maturity and experience. So who better than Suryakumar Yadav? Had it been Hardik - because that is what we were expecting since he was the vice-captain in the World Cup - there were few challenges that he too had to face as far as the fitness is concerned. So looking at all the dynamics, I feel Surya is a great choice," Ojha told OneIndia.

"He is a street-smart guy. He has a great camaraderie with Gautam Gambhir. They have played together, and if you remember, when Gauti bhai was leading KKR, Surya was the vice-captain. So that understanding and that trust level is always there. Hardik, they thought that maybe fitness can trouble him. So, the next best person was Suryakumar Yadav," he added.

"If You Give Gambhir A Choice...": Nehra On Kohli-Rohit Playing 2027 ODI WC

Former India pacer Ashish Nehra has shared his views on the possibility of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing till the ODI World Cup 2027. This comes after new India head coach Gautam Gambhir claimed that if the two veterans manage to stay fit, he'll surely have Rohit and Kohli in the planks for the marquee event in 2027. Kohli and Rohit announced their T20I retirements after the T20 World Cup final last month, and will solely focus on ODIs and Tests with two major ICC events scheduled to take place next year. Speaking on Kohli and Rohit's chances of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Nehra said that the duo will have to keep raising the bar.

"It involves both physical and mental aspects. It depends on your passion and motivation and in these aspects, there is no dearth at all when it comes to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. It's because of their drive that they have reached where they are today. From here, young guns like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you. For that, you need to keep raising your bar. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have done that and shown," Nehra told Sports Today.

While Gambhir has kept the door open for Rohit and Kohli's participation, Nehra insisted that 2027 is far away but if they're able to make it till then it will be great for the team.

"2027 is far away at this point. But it's great thinking. If you ask me 'I want to be 18 all my life. I didn't want to retire. If you give Gambhir a choice and tell him his body is fit, he will say 'No Sai Sudharsan, I am ready'. 4 years is far away, but it's a great thought. But, if that can be done, nothing like it," he added.

Gambhir's stint as India's new head coach will begin from July 27, when Suryakumar Yadav and co will take on Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series.

The series consists of three T20Is, followed by as many ODIs, starting from August 2. Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid to become India's new coach, whose tenure came to an end after India's victory at the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gambhir, who won the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, is likely to bring a different approach to Team India.

"Was Shocked To See His...": SRH Star Reveals Hardik's Words During T20 WC

Andhra Pradesh and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy said that he admires star India batter Virat Kohli and former South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers. Nitish was called-up to the Indian squad after a solid Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with SRH, for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Though he could not play due to a sports hernia injury, he has created an impression strong enough to be considered for future series with a 'Emerging Player of the Season' award worthy performance in this year's IPL, scoring 303 runs in 11 innings with two fifties at a strike rate of 143 and taking three wickets with his seam bowling.

The 21-year-old is now working his way back to full fitness as the new domestic season starts on September 5 with the Duleep Trophy.

Speaking to Star Sports, Nitish said that he has been a huge fan of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the last 10 years.

Nitish recalled when he first met Virat Kohli and only shook his hand and got his autograph. The 21-year-old further added that he hoped to play well against RCB, so that Kohli would notice him.

"I really admire Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. I've been a huge fan of RCB for the last 10 years. In 2023, I had the chance to meet Virat Kohli. I didn't have much to ask him; I just wanted to shake his hand and get his autograph. In 2024, I was hoping to play well against RCB so that Virat Kohli would notice my game. Though I didn't get to bat in that match, he remembered my name during the post-match handshake. That meant a lot to me," Nitish was quoted in a release from Star Sports as saying.

Nitish started making waves Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy when he scored a triple ton against Tamil Nadu and 190 against a strong bowling attack of Karnataka and a quadruple ton against Nagaland, finishing the 2017-18 edition of the tournament with 1,237 runs.

Frustrated by his poor performances, in 2019, Nitish decided to play solely as a batter, but Srinivas Reddy, one of his coaches, encouraged him to continue as a bowler, pointing out the rarity of pace bowling all-rounders in India.

After that, Nitish was picked up for an ACA camp to pick up a pool of players for the 2019-20 domestic season. The all-rounder said that he was initially picked up as an understudy in the larger squad but the skipper, Hanuma Vihari, was impressed and pushed for his inclusion in the Ranji squad. He went on to make his Ranji debut against Kerala in January 2020.

Reddy was picked up SRH ahead of the 2023 IPL but got to play only two games in which he did not get to bat. In July last year, he was called up to India's Emerging Players squad for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka but did not get to bat there either.

Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Register Big Wins To Enter Semis Of Women's Asia Cup

Hosts Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cruised into the semifinals of the women's Asia Cup T20 tournament with comfortable victories over Thailand and Malaysia in Dambulla on Wednesday. While Sri Lanka thrashed Thailand by 10 wickets in the final group match of the tournament, Bangladesh hammered Malaysia by 114 runs earlier in the day at the same venue. In the first match of the day, Bangladesh rode on opener Murshida Khatun's 59-ball 80 and skipper Nigar Sultana's 37-ball 62 to post a commanding 191 for 2.

Opting to bat, Khatun and wicket-keeper Dilara Akter (33) shared 65 runs for the opening wicket before the former joined hands with Sultana to stitch 89 runs for the second wicket to set the foundation for the big total.

Bangladesh then restricted Malaysia to 77 for 8 in 20 overs to register a convincing win and a place in the semifinals.

In the last group match of the tournament, Thailand could muster only 93 for 7 after opting to bat.

Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai top-scored for Thailand with a 53-ball 47.

Off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari (2/13) was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka.

The chase was a cakewalk for Sri Lanka with skipper Chamari Athapaththu (49 not out) and Vishmi Gunaratne (39) remaining unbeaten to guide the island nation home in a resounding fashion.

None of the Thailand bowlers could manage to make an impact with the Sri Lankan openers breezing their way to victory.

In the semifinals, defending champions India will take on Bangladesh, while Sri Lanka will be up against Pakistan on Friday.

"Much Needed Game For Other Batters": Mandhana After Win Over Nepal

Stand-in India skipper Smriti Mandhana was pleased to see the middle-order batters getting some much-needed runs under their belt against Nepal in Dambulla on Tuesday ahead of the women's Asia Cup semifinals. With regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur skipping the match and India sitting pretty at the top of the group, Mandhana decided to shuffle the batting order to give time to the other batters in the middle during their last group match against minnows Nepal. Mandhana, a regular opener, didn't bat at the top as Shafali Verma (81) and Dayalan Hemalatha (47) opened the innings and smashed their way to 122 in 14 overs to lay the foundation.

S Sajana (10) and Jemmimah Rodrigues (28) then took them to a solid 178 for 3, which proved enough as Nepal could manage 96 for nine in 20 overs to suffer a 82-run loss.

"As an opener you don't get a lot of games where you don't bat. Much needed game time for all the other batters. The middle order hasn't batted in the previous games," Mandhana said during the post-match presentation.

"The conditions were different and it is always good to have game time under your belt. The middle order didn't get time in the South Africa series as well, so good they could spend some time in the middle." Mandhana said each tournament since the last few months has been a step towards preparation for the World T20 scheduled to be held in Bangladesh later this year.

"Not only this tournament, but also in the last five or six months, the preparations started post WPL, there are a lot of fine tuning to be done and we have to keep improving, cannot go into a World Cup under prepared," she said.

India might play Bangladesh in the semifinals, an opponent they had comprehensively defeated in a recent away series but Mandhana said they are not going to lower their guard.

"You don't take any team (semifinal opponents) lightly, we have two days to rest and practice before we go out and apply ourselves." Adjudged player-of-the-match for her blistering 48-ball knock 81, Shafali Verma said she backed her strength and the execution was good.

"The consistency is improving but I could have finished the innings today," said the opener, who slammed 12 fours and a six during her match-winning innings.

Shafali had scored the fastest double century in women's Tests during a match against South Africa in Chennai last month and she said it gave her a lot of confidence.

"Double hundred is big for any batter and I got plenty of confidence from that innings, I wasn't in good form before that but the innings helped me get back my confidence." Nepal skipper Indu Barma said they will look to come back stronger after taking a lot of lessons from their matches against India and Pakistan.

"I am proud of my team. The effort we put in, we realised our weakness and will come back stronger.

"It was a great exposure to play against India. I am happy with my team, after 10 overs the bowlers got good momentum and restricted them to below 200. We got good experience from this tournament by playing against India and Pakistan. We made some good memories," she said.

Shafali Shines As India Beat Nepal To Qualify For Semis Of Women's Asia Cup

Explosive opener Shafali Verma slammed a career-best 48-ball 81 as defending champions India thrashed minnows Nepal by 82 runs in their final group match to confirm their semifinal spot at the Women's Asia Cup T20 tournament in Dambulla on Tuesday. With India shuffling the batting order, Shafali and Dayalan Hemalatha (47) opened the innings and gave India a flying start after stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana won the toss and opted to bat. The opening duo smashed its way to 122 in 14 overs to lay the foundation.

Jemimah Rodrigues then hit unbeaten 28 off 15 balls, including three fours in the final over, to take India to a solid 178 for three.

Nepal needed to achieve the target in or under 10 overs to surpass Pakistan on net run rate and qualify for the semifinals but they could only manage 96 for nine in their 20 overs, thanks to some superb bowling from the in-form Indian attack.

Deepti Sharma (3/13) was the most successful bowler for India as she snapped three wickets, while her spin colleague Radha Yadav (2/12) and seamer Arundhati Reddy (2/18), playing in place of a rested Pooja Vastrakar, snapped two each.

Pakistan, thus, became the second team to qualify for the semifinals from group A.

It proved to be a tough chase for Nepal as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals to slip to 52 for 4 in 10.2 overs with seamer Arundhati cleaning up both the openers -- Samjhana Khadka (7) and Sita Rana Magar (18).

Renuka Singh (1/15) then dismissed Kabita Kunwar (6), while Radha removed Indu Barma (14).

Deepti then got into the act, getting rid of Rubina Chhetry (15) and Kabita Joshi (0) and then removed Puja Mahato (2) with a direct throw.

Dolly Bhatta (5) became the second victim of Radha, while a caught and bowl effort helped Deepti dismiss Kajal Shrestha (3) to claim her third wicket.

Earlier, Shafali literally toyed with the bowlers, using her flicks to good use as 12 fours and a maximum flew from her blade.

Hemalatha struggled a bit but chugged along with her experienced partner as the Nepalese bowlers toiled in vain.

The openers racked up 50 in the powerplay and continued to make the bowlers pay.

Shafali was particularly harsh on medium pacer Kabita Joshi (1/36), smashing her for five boundaries, while off-spinner Sabnam Rai (0/41) too was sent across the line a couple of times.

The dashing opener smacked spinner Rubina Chhetry (0/14) over deep mid-wicket for her first six in the seventh over before picking up another four with a slog-sweep. She completed her fifty in 26 balls in the eighth over.

Hemalatha, who was finding it difficult to get the middle of the bat, then clobbered Joshi for a straight six as India reached 91 for no loss at the halfway stage.

Nepal had an opportunity to break the stand in the 12th over by left-arm spinner Sita Rana Magar (2/25) but seamer Indu Barma (0/29) spilled a regulation catch off Hemalatha at the boundary line.

The batter, however, was caught by Rubina after a bit of a juggle off the same bowler as India lost their first wicket with the team at 122 in 14 overs.

Hemalatha struck five fours and a six in her 42-ball innings.

Shafali continued to punish the bowlers, slamming two more fours off Barma but Sita Rana finally got rid of the opener with a tossed up delivery as the keeper did the rest.

Joshi then trapped S Sajana (10) but Rodrigues swelled the innings with a little cameo.

On Gill Getting Vice-Captaincy, Agarkar's Honest Hardik Pandya Admission

Team India left for Sri Lanka on Monday for the upcoming white-ball series. The series will begin from July 27, with three T20Is followed by three ODIs. In the T20Is, the visitors will be led by star batter Suryakumar Yadav while regular skipper Rohit Sharma will be leading in the ODIs. It came as a huge surprise for everyone as all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was being touted as the most deserving replacement of Rohit, was chosen over Surya. Not only this, Pandya was replaced as the vice-captain by young batter Shubman Gill.

Ahead of the Sri Lanka, newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar held a press conference in Mumbai.

On being asked about appointment of Gill as the vice-captain in both T20Is and ODIs, Agarkar praised the young opener, calling him an all-format player who has quality in his game.

"When Hardik did get injured it was a bit of a challenge. Rohit was still around was around, made our life a lot easier.  He came and led. We don't want that situation going forward again. Shubman is the guy we feel again as he is a three-format player firstly, and he has shown quality over the last year or so," said Agarkar.

"You try and have somebody who can also learn from a couple of the senior guys that are there. Surya in this instance or Rohit who's still around, so we don't face the same challenges (that) suddenly (you are) trying to look for a captain in case there are injuries or loss of form somewhere. He's shown some decent leadership qualities," he added.

This series also marks the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who got overlooked in the past few series. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has also found a place in the squad.

Agarkar said the door is not shut for the former deputies like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and even Pandya as far as leadership role is concerned.

"We need to get him (Pant) back playing, that's the first thing. He's going to be a key to us as a player; hasn't had a lot of cricket. We'll see what he can do. We don't want to burden somebody again who's just coming back after over a year out of the game. KL has not been part of T20 now for a little while," he said.

SL, Bangladesh Win; Move Closer To Semifinal Berth At Women's Asia Cup

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh produced superlative performances to secure victories over Malaysia and Thailand in group B and inch closer to the semifinal berth at the Women's Asia Cup T20 tournament in Dambulla on Monday. While hosts Sri Lanka thrashed Malaysia by a massive 114 runs, Bangladesh outwitted Thailand by seven wickets later in the day. With four points each, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh occupy the top two spots. Chamari Athapaththu was the architect of Sri Lanka's dominating win as she smashed a 69-ball 119 not out, studded with 14 boundaries and seven sixes to single-handedly power the team to a daunting 184 for 4 after opting to bat.

Harshitha Madavi (26) and Anushka Sanjeewani (31) also chipped in with useful contributions.

The bowlers then joined the party as Shashini Gimhani (3/9), Kawya Kavindi (2/7) and Kavisha Dilhari (2/4) produced incredible figures to bundle Malaysia out for just 40 in 19.5 overs.

Inoshi Priyadharshani (1/10), Sachini Nisansala (1/4) and Ama Kanchana (1/5) also snapped a wicket each.

For Malaysia, only Elsa Hunter could reach double-digit figures, making 10 in 11 balls. Aina Najwa scored 9 after facing 43 balls, which was the reason that Malaysia could last that many overs.

In the second match of the day, Thailand cut a sorry figure as they could manage just 96 for 9 in their stipulated 20 overs, courtesy a 41-ball 40 by opener Nattaya Boochatham after deciding to take first strike.

Rabeya Khan was the most successful bowler as she returned with four wickets for 14 runs, while Sabikun Nahar (2/28) and Ritu Moni (2/10) took two wickets each to break the back of their opponents.

Chasing 97 for a win, Murshida Khatun made 50 off 55 balls as Bangladesh romped home, scoring 100 for 3 in 17.3 overs.

Dilara Akter (17) was run out in the fifth over but Khatun and Ishma Tanjim (16) shared 60 runs to steady the chase.

"Injustice" Calls Intensify As Hardik Gets Snubbed For T20I Captaincy

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been making headlines for months. Since his arrival at Mumbai Indians, as the captain of the franchise, Hardik has found it hard to remain away from headlines. The Baroda-born cricketer became a big talking point among fans and former cricketers again after being snubbed for the role of Team India's captain in T20Is, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and selectors preferring Suryakumar Yadav. Though Surya has also done well as a leader in a handful of games that he has led in, there are some who feel it was 'injustice' to deny Hardik the role.

Former India batter Sanjay Bangar admits that Surya has valuable experience as a leader but 'injustice has been meted out' to Hardik, considering he was the front-runner to take the T20I captaincy role after Rohit Sharma's retirement. Bangar also feels that Hardik would be 'deeply hurt' seeing Surya being crowned the T20I skipper.

"I am a bit surprised as far as Hardik not being the captain of the T20 team is concerned because even before the previous T20 World Cup it seemed like if Rohit hadn't become the captain and Hardik hadn't gotten injured at that time, Hardik only would have become the captain," Bangar said on Star Sports.

"The Indian team had started going in that direction. The selectors had also found that path. I find this sudden U-turn slightly troubling. We have certainly read that the chairman of the selection committee and the coach have spoken to Hardik Pandya," he added.

"It's not that Suryakumar Yadav has played less domestic cricket before playing international cricket. So he has a lot of experience, I think he has led Mumbai in domestic cricket as well and knows how to extract the best from the players," he asserted.

"So there is nothing wrong in Suryakumar being made the captain. I fully believe that he will do a good job but I still feel a little injustice has been meted out to Hardik," the former India batting coach added.

Even before the T20 World Cup 2024 began, it was being reported that Hardik could be the one leading the team in the global event, with Rohit expected to step down.

Hence, seeing Suryakumar being named the captain in the shortest format, coupled with Hardik not even getting the role of his deputy, was baffling for many.

"I am a bit surprised as far as Hardik not being the captain of the T20 team is concerned because even before the previous T20 World Cup it seemed like if Rohit hadn't become the captain and Hardik hadn't gotten injured at that time, Hardik only would have become the captain," he asserted.

"The Indian team had started going in that direction. The selectors had also found that path. I find this sudden U-turn slightly troubling. We have certainly read that the chairman of the selection committee and the coach have spoken to Hardik Pandya," Bangar further said.

England Rout West Indies In 2nd Test, Take Unassailable 2-0 Lead In Series

England thrashed the West Indies by 241 runs in the second Test at Trent Bridge on Sunday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in a three-match series. The West Indies, set 385 to win, collapsed to 143 all out as they lost all 10 wickets in 23 overs on the fourth day, with 20-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir taking Test-best figures of 5-41. Earlier, the Yorkshire duo of Joe Root (122) and Harry Brook (109) both made hundreds in England's second innings 425. West Indies had actually led by 41 runs on first innings after making 457 in reply to England's 416. It was an encouraging display by the tourists, who had been twice bowled out cheaply during an innings and 114-run defeat in the first Test at Lord's.

But after England paceman Chris Woakes made the initial breakthrough Sunday, they proved powerless to resist Bashir.

England batsman Ollie Pope was named player of the match after scoring 172 runs in total, including 121 in the first innings.

The third and final Test starts at Edgbaston on Friday.

Did Shami Target Kohli-Shastri On '2019 WC Semis Snub? Says "What More..."

Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami was a standout performer in the 2019 ODI World Cup but he was not included in the playing XI for the semifinal clash against New Zealand. Shami took 14 wickets in 4 matches at an impressive economy rate of 5.48. The performances included a five-wicket haul against England and a hat-trick against Afghanistan. However, when it came to the semifinal match, Shami was snubbed and India went on to lose the game by 18 runs to crash out of the competition. During a recent interaction on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel, Shami opened up about his disappointment and even had a question for then captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri.

“In 2019 I did not play the first 4-5 games. In the next game, I took a hat-trick, then picked up a five-wicket haul and then four wickets in the next game. A similar happened in 2023. I did not play in the first few games and then picked a fifer, then four wickets and then a five-wicket haul again,” he said.

“The one thing I keep wondering is every team needs players who can perform well. I took 13 wickets in three matches. What more do you expect from me? I neither have questions nor do I have answers. I can only prove myself when I get the opportunity. You gave me a chance, and I took 13 wickets in three matches. Then we lost to New Zealand. Played four matches overall and picked 14 wickets. In 2023, I picked 24 wickets in seven matches,” Shami added.

Shami was India's top wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2024 where he impressed everyone with his bowling and went on to take 24 wickets including three five-wicket hauls. The fast bowler is currently recovering after undergoing surgeries and there has been no official confirmation on his return.

Mandhana Gifts Wheelchair-Bound Girl Mobile Phone After India Match

In a heartwarming gesture, star India batter Smriti Mandhana gifted a wheelchair-bound girl a mobile phone after the team's match at the ongoing women's T20 Asia Cup tournament in Dambulla. Adeesha Herath, who came to the stadium escorted by her mother in a wheelchair, experienced a pleasant surprise as Mandhana came to meet her and presented her a phone. "Adeesha Herath's love for cricket brought her to the stadium, despite all the challenges. The highlight of her day? A surprise encounter with her favourite cricketer, Smriti Mandhana, who handed her a mobile phone as a token of appreciation," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a tweet.

In the video posted along with the tweet, Mandhana was heard asking the girl her name.

"You like cricket, that is nice. You enjoyed today's match. I have brought a gift for you from all of us," Mandhana told the girl, before having a high-five with her and posing for a photograph.

The girl's mother said it was an unexpected gift.

"We came to watch the match unexpectedly, as my daughter wanted to go for the match. We met Mandhana madam from Indian team and my daughter received a phone from her. It was unexpected and my daughter is so lucky to receive this gift from her," she said.

India beat arch rivals Pakistan by seven wickets on Friday in their opening match. They are up against United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

Ex-PCB Chief's Blunt Admission On India Travelling For Champions Trophy

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Khalid Mahmood believes India will not travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy early next year. "They are very very slim chances they will agree to play in Pakistan," Mahmood, who is a retired senior bureaucrat, said. He, however, said that if India doesn't visit Pakistan, it would be a non-profitable deal for PCB and the ICC.

"India is the richest cricket board and carries a lot of clout. If they don't send their team to Pakistan I foresee even countries like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh following their path," Mahmood said.

"This would basically reduce the Champions Trophy into a venture where revenues will take a hit, expenses will grow and profits would fall," Mahmood, who twice went to India in 1989 and 1999 as Pakistan's junior and senior team manager, said.

Mahmood said that PCB should just follow their policy of not mixing sports and politics.

"Look the thing is at this level you can only lobby and try to convince other boards to be on your side. India has too much clout in the ICC it would do no good for Pakistan to adopt a tit for tat strategy." "Thing is when the BCCI says it can't send its team and will play its matches outside Pakistan, it does reduce the purpose for Pakistan of hosting an ICC event," he added.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held from February 19 to March 9 next year.

Gambhir "Did Not Directly" Ask For SKY As captain: How Pandya Got Snubbed

Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav - those two seem to be the most discussed cricketers currently in India. While Pandya has been demoted, Yadav has been promoted as the Indian T20I captain. Pandya is not even the vice-captain though he is in the T20I team for the Sri Lanka Tour. Meanwhile, several reports have claimed that Suryakumar Yadav may be seen as a long-time prospect for captaincy in  the shortest format. For Pandya, who was the vice-captain in India's T20 World Cup-winning campaign, this was unexpected of sorts.

But why did new Indian cricket team coach Gautam Gambhir go with Suryakumar as the T20I captain? A report has claimed that it was not a direct call.

A BCCI official told Hindustan Times, "Although Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya in the call, he made it amply clear that he would want to work with a captain whose workload does not become a stumbling block. Agarkar was clear with his views."

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed his support for all-rounder Hardik Pandya to assume the T20I captaincy.

"I think Hardik Pandya 'shayad captain banne chahiye the' (for Sri Lanka tour). Hardik has captained the Gujarat Titans for two years and in their first year itself, they made it to the final...Hardik has experience captaining the T20I side. He was also the vice-captain at the T20 World Cup. Now, a new coach has arrived, there will be new planning. Surya is also a good player, he has been playing for years. He is a No.1 T20 player, I hope he will shoulder the captain's responsibility well. But I feel they should have backed Hardik," Kaif told IANS.

"Gambhir is an experienced captain and coach...He understands cricket very well. I think 'Hardik ne aisa koi galat kaam nhi kia ki unko captaincy na mile' (Hardik has not done anything wrong that he should not get the captaincy). He has experience, has captained in the IPL and leading a new team (Gujarat Titans) to the trophy, with fresh and young faces, which is a huge thing. He has made the Titans win by working from Ground Zero in the IPL...I think he was entitled to the captaincy. So let's just wait and see."

"This Belongs To You": Harshit Celebrates India ODI Call-Up With Father

Indian pacer Harshit Rana posted a heartwarming picture on social media, celebrating his call-up to the ODI team with his father and telling him that this accomplishment of his life "belongs to him". Harshit Rana was among the younger and newer stars named in the white-ball team for India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka starting from July 27 onwards. This will be India's first-ever international assignment under the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir. The former opener was announced as India's coach earlier in July after Rahul Dravid's contract ended following Men in Blue's ICC T20 World Cup title win.

Taking to Instagram, Rana wrote, "This BELONGS to you...LOVE YOU DAD." In the past, Rana lifted his father, Pradeep, in his arms, who was wearing an Indian jersey.

Rana was also a part of the squad for the Zimbabwe tour this month, which involved five T20I matches, but did not play a game. Harshit had a splendid IPL with tournament winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a team which Gambhir mentored to their first title in a decade and overall their third. The 22-year-old picked 19 wickets at an average of 20.15, picking big scalps throughout the season, including Heinrich Klaasen, Virat Kohli, Faf Du Plessis, and KL Rahul. He was the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the season.

Notably, Rana has taken 28 wickets in 25 T20Is. Notably, the Delhi bowler can bat as well, as he has a century and fifty each in first-class cricket, in which he averages 49.00 in nine innings with a strike rate of 89.

India will be led by two different captains for the T20I and ODI legs of the Sri Lanka tour, all set to commence on 27 July. With Rohit Sharma having retired from the T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the shortest format against Sri Lanka. Barring a few changes, the side bears a familiar look to the squad that featured in India's successful ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

The ODI side sees a number of stalwarts, including Rohit and Virat Kohli, return to the setup. The squad looks similar to the one which dominated the 2023 50-over World Cup in India, ending up as runners-up to Australia in a heartbreaking loss after a 10-match win streak.

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), duhubman Gill (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana.

Last Few Weeks Have Been Nothing Short Of A Dream: Suryakumar Yadav

Swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav on Friday expressed his delight at being appointed captain of the Indian T20 side for the tour of Sri Lanka, saying the last few weeks have been "nothing short of a dream". In a heartfelt post, Suryakumar thanked everyone for keeping faith in him and for receiving plenty of support in recent times. The 33-year-old Suryakumar succeeded Rohit Sharma as India's captain in the shortest format ahead of flamboyant all-rounder Hardik Pandya. "Thank you so much for outpouring love, support and best wishes from you. Last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful," Suryakumar wrote on Instagram.

"Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words. This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings. All fame reaches God, God is great," Suryakumar added.

Suryakumar was part of the team that triumphed in the T20 World Cup last month and signed off by pulling off an extraordinary catch in the deep off the bowling of Pandya to send back the dangerous David Miller who looked on course to take South Africa past India's target in the title clash at Barbados.

His deputy in Sri Lanka will be Shubman Gill, who will be donning the vice-captain's hat.

The 24-year-old replaced Hardik as the vice-captain of the ODI as well as the T20I teams.

However, the star all-rounder will be travelling as a player for the T20I series.
