Retirement Hint? Australia Great Highlights Rohit Sharma's "Unusual" Act

The talks around India captain Rohit Sharma's potential retirement from Test cricket have intensified with the team's bitter defeat to Australia in the 4th Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday. India's defeat in the match makes World Test Championship (WTC) qualification quite difficult while Rohit's form with the bat does make it difficult for the management to fit him in the XI. Suggestions are that the Sydney Test is likely to be Rohit's last in the longest format, and Australia great Justin Langer also spotted an 'unusually emotional' India skipper on Day 5 at MCG, hinting that the end is near for him.

Langer said that Rohit was unusually emotional on the field at MCG on Day 5 of the 4th Test, which could be seen as a hint behind his potential exit from the format. The former Australia batter also feels Rohit is quite tired, with the stress of the game getting to his nerves.

"Rohit Sharma looks very tired to me. I saw him quite emotional on the field yesterday. That's unusual for us to see Rohit like that. He's usually so calm, so chilled out. But he was showing his emotions; he looks tired. It's understandable because as a cricketer, when you're not making runs, that's all that stays on your mind. And as captain, if you're not making runs and your team is not winning, the stress starts to come into the game. Whether he can get up for Sydney, that's up to him. It's a big challenge. India need him to get up to speed in Sydney," Langer said after the end of the game.

Langer, however, doesn't have the same opinion on Virat Kohli. He feels Virat still has a few years of top-level cricket to offer and he has what it takes to improve his form.

"With Virat, I agree [with Ravi Shastri]. He looked excellent in that first innings. Maybe the run out [of Jaiswal] did ruffle him, but we were surprised to see him get out the way he did. He is still a great player, is in outstanding physical condition, and all Indians would be hoping he comes good," he asserted.

Shastri also feels the end is near for Rohit in Tests but Kohli is likely to play for a few more years.

From Jasprit Bumrah To Joe Root, Cricketers Who Dominated The Game In 2024

2024 saw some of the most competitive and captivating cricket being played on the field. While new rivalries developed, the older ones continued to prosper with a new-found intensity. On one side, game's greats retired, a new generation is also slowly taking shape. This year saw India end their 11-year-long ICC title drought and secure the T20 World Cup title win. England, New Zealand and Australia also registered some important wins throughout the year. All this while, some of the world's best cricketers enthralled the crowds, became thorn in the eyes of their rivals and broke several records on the way to victory.

Here are the best cricketers of 2024:

Joe Root (England)

Largely a one-format player nowadays, Root was in monstrous form in Tests this year, leading the run-charts with 1,556 runs at an average of 55.57 and a strike rate of over 63 in 17 matches, with six tons and five fifties in 31 innings and best score of 262.

Root broke two massive Test records this year, becoming England's highest century-maker (36) and Test run-getter (12,972 runs), going past legendary Alastair Cook and touching the 20,000 run mark in international cricket, being the first England player to do so.

Also, he is chasing Sachin Tendulkar's record of highest Test runs (15,921) and is the fifth-highest run-getter this year.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (India)

In 2024, Jaiswal scored 1,478 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.74, with three centuries (two double tons) and 11 fifties in 29 innings, with the best score of 214. His two double centuries against England in the home series earlier this year, which saw him score 712 runs in five matches was a huge standout. However, his adaptation to Australian conditions is just as stunning, having scored 359 runs in eight innings at an average of 51.50, with a masterclass 161 at Perth and fighting knocks of 82 and 84 at Melbourne being standouts.

Jaiswal's run tally is the highest by an Indian opener during a calendar year and his 36 sixes during this year is also a world record, having beaten legends Virender Sehwag and Brendon McCullum in these aspects respectively. His only low was a mixed IPL 2024 season, with 435 runs at an average of 31 with just one century and fifty in 15 innings.

Including his 293 runs in eight T20Is at an average of 41.85 and two fifties, Jaiswal top-scored for India in international cricket this year and was overall second, with 1,771 runs in 23 matches and 37 innings at an average of 52.08, with three tons and 11 fifties.

Jasprit Bumrah (India)

Mohammed Siraj's post-match interview after T20 WC final saying 'I only believe on Jassi bhai, game changer player he is' in his broken English summarises the country's love affair with the pace spearhead and how important he was to their fortunes. Be it his 19 wickets during England's home series on largely unhelpful surfaces at an average of 16.89 in four matches, his 'Player of the Tournament' winning T20 WC title-capturing performance with 15 crucial scalps at an average of 8.26 or his workhorse, once-in-a-generation run in ongoing BGT with 30 wickets in four matches at an average of 12.83 and three five-wicket hauls, Bumrah is country's newest and rightfully deserving cricketing darling, having captured the minds and hearts of a batting-obsessed nation and making fast bowling, yorkers and swing, cool among masses.

Bumrah is the leading-wicket-taker in international cricket this year, with 86 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 13.76, with four four-wicket hauls and five five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6/45. Also in a disappointing IPL 2024 for five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI), he topped the charts with 20 scalps in 13 matches at an average of 16.80 and one fifer.

Travis Head (India)

Nominated for the ICC Cricketer of the Year award, Head continued his all-format dominance this year. On more than one occasion, he troubled the Indian cricket team and England, displaying a preference for bullying the blue-coloured teams. While they often got the better of him sometimes, he won the larger battle in favour of his team.

He was Australia's top run-getter this year, scoring 1,399 runs in 29 matches and 35 innings at an average of 42.39. He scored four centuries and five fifties, with best score of 154*.

In nine Tests, he made 608 runs in 15 innings at an average of 40.53, with three centuries and a fifty, with best score of 152. His centuries against India at Adelaide and Brisbane stand out the most. In five ODIs, he made 252 runs at an average of 63.00, with a century and best score of 154* against arch-rivals England.

Travis had an incredible year in T20Is, scoring 539 runs in 15 innings at an average of 38.50, with a strike rate of 178.04 and four half-centuries. His best score was 80. He became the top-ranked T20I batter and also emerged as the third-highest run-getter in the T20 WC with 255 runs at an average of 42.50, the strike rate of 158.38, with two half-centuries and the best knock of 76 against India.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was where Head made a game-changing impact, breaking numerous batting records with opening partner Abhishek Sharma for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He emerged as the fourth-highest run-getter there with 567 runs in 15 matches at an average of 40.50, with a strike rate of 191.55, a century and four fifties.

Shreyas Iyer (India)

Forced out of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) due to alleged lack of red-ball cricket commitment and dedication, Iyer had a fairytale ending to 2024, winning four trophies, including 42nd Ranji Trophy title, Irani Cup, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with Mumbai and IPL 2024 with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with latter two as captain.

Not only Iyer thrived as captain, he was also in top form as a batter across all formats, except for a brief dry run with India in England Tests and Sri Lanka ODIs. In 44 matches across all formats, Iyer made 1,841 runs at an average of 43.83, with four centuries and seven fifties and the best score of 233. Also, he secured a deal of Rs 26.75 crores with Punjab Kings (PBKS), becoming the second-most expensive player in the league.

Gus Atkinson (England)

Though Gus Atkinson got some white-ball experience last year last year ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup in India, the young pacer truly arrived this year when he was included in the West Indies series.

The home series against West Indies was the farewell series for legendary James Anderson, who retired after the first Test at Lords' bringing his career to full circle. In a passing of touch performance, Atkinson took the baton from the 42-year-old, taking 12 wickets in his debut Test, taking not one, but two five-wicket hauls in a Test innings at Lord's, a ten-wicket match haul. Later, during the Sri Lanka series, he scored an attacking 118 in 115 balls, with 14 fours and four sixes, becoming the part of elite company to take a five-wicket haul, ten-wicket haul and a century at Lord's.

Later, during the New Zealand series away from home, a hat-trick made him the fastest player to secure a five-wicket haul, ten-fer, century and hat-trick in Tests in just 10 Tests.

Now in 11 Tests this year, Atkinson took 52 wickets at an average of 22.15, with best figures of 7/45. He secured three five-wicket hauls and one ten-fer. With the bat, he has made 352 runs in 16 innings, averaging 23.46, with a century to his name. His strike rate is 79.10.

Matt Henry (New Zealand)

The Kiwi pacer was a workhorse this year for his side, taking 48 scalps in nine Tests at an average of 18.58, with four five-wicket hauls and best figures of 7/67 in an innings. He was his side's leading Test wicket-taker and overall fourth. His standout spell was 5/15 against India at Bengaluru to skittle them out for just 46, setting the tone for a landmark series win. His best figures of 7/67 came against the Aussies, though in a losing cause.

In 16 matches this year, including 11 wickets in seven T20Is, Henry took 59 wickets in 16 matches averaging 18.98, with three five-wicket hauls. He was Kiwis' highest wicket-taker this year and overall fourth.

Arshdeep Singh (India)

The young left-arm pacer continues to do wonders for India in the T20I format, topping their wicket-charts with 36 scalps in 18 matches at an average of 13.50 and best figures of 4/9. This also included a brilliant performance in India's T20 WC campaign, taking joint-highest wickets with 17 scalps at an average of 12.64 and best figures of 4/9. Including two ODI scalps in two matches, he took 38 scalps in 20 matches at an average of 15.55.

Ravindra Jadeja (India)

Jadeja as an all-rounder can make it to any side as a specialist batter or bowler and he proves this point even in his mid 30s. In 20 international matches this year, he has made 562 runs at an average of 26.76, with a century and three fifties in 23 innings. His best score is 112.

In 20 international matches, he also took 49 wickets at an average of 25.95, with three five-wicket hauls and a 10-wicket haul, with best figures of 5/41.

He also retired from T20Is after capturing the T20 WC with India, scoring 35 runs in five innings and getting just one wicket in eight matches.

Rohit Sharma To Quit Test Cricket, Says Report. Announcement Likely On...

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma is all set to announce his retirement after the end of the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia, according to a report by Times Of India. The report claimed that the BCCI top brass and selectors have already spoken about the decision and it is highly unlikely that Rohit will be changing his mind. While the exact time of the announcement is not determined, the report said that it will happen after the final Test match in Sydney.

However, if India qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Rohit may try to convince the selectors to allow him to stay.

India skipper Rohit Sharma looked shattered as he confessed to being "disturbed" after the heavy loss to Australia in the fourth Test here, saying there are "things" that he needs to address at a personal level apart from the team's collective problems amid intense focus on his form.

With 31 runs in six innings across three Tests, the Indian skipper's tally is just one more than Jasprit Bumrah's series wicket-haul of 30. The clamour for Test retirement have reached a crescendo and Sydney could be his final port of call in whites but he doesn't want to go out without a fight.

Where does he stand as a batter and as a captain? What is his frame of mind? The questions are many but the answers are not so simple.

"I stand where I am standing today. There is nothing to think about what has happened in the past. Obviously, few results have not gone our way. As a captain, yes, that is disappointing," he tried to conceal his disappointment after the 184-run defeat but then revealed what has become obvious. He is not in a happy place.

"You know, a lot of the things that I am trying to do is not falling in the place that I would want to. But mentally, look, you know, it is disturbing without a doubt. If you have come here and try and do successfully what you're supposed to and if those things don't fall in place, that is a big disappointment. But as of now, that is where it is," Rohit explained.

Australia, Umpires Labelled "Cheaters" By MCG Crowd For Jaiswal DRS Drama

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal's controversial dismissal on Day 5 of the 4th Test against Australia has become a hot topic of debate. The incident happened on the fifth ball of the 71st over. Jaiswal was given not out for a caught-behind appeal, following an attempted pull shot. However, the decision was overturned by the TV umpire on visual evidence that the ball had changed direction, even though no spike was picked up by the 'Snicko'. Jaiswal expressed his displeasure over the incident as he was seen confronting the on-field umpire.

It was a crucial moment as far as the result of the match is concerned, with Jaiswal batting on 84 at that time. Following his dismissal, India suffered a late collapse, losing the match by 184 runs.

A section of Indian fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) weren't happy with the third umpire's decision. Chants of of 'cheaters' rang around the ground as Wilson was forced to change his decision.

In the chase of 340, a draw looked imminent, especially after playing a wicketless second session.

But when it mattered the most, India suffered a batting collapse in the final session by losing their last seven wickets for 34 runs and suffer a 184-run defeat to Australia in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday.

In front of a record 74,362 fans, Australia looked on course for the win after reducing India to 33/3 in the first session. But Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant kept them at bay in the second session, as the old ball began to soften.

But in the final session of the gripping Test match, Pant fell to Travis Head and that opened the door for Australia to barge in as India collapsed from 121/3 to 155 all out. Captain Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked three wickets in a terrific bowling performance from Australia, who now have a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, ahead of next week's Test match in Sydney.

Virat Kohli Turns 'Virtual Captain' At MCG vs Australia. Viral Video Proves

Virat Kohli was seen setting the field during Australia's second innings of the 4th Test in Melbourne on Sunday. The former India captain rolled back the glory days as he was actively involved in team discussions. Kohli, who stepped down as Test captain in 2022, was seen helping India skipper Rohit Sharma in making the field changes. He was also constantly on Rohit's ear as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj stunned Australia's top-order. A video of the same went viral on social media.

In another video, Kohli was seen guiding Siraj on where to bowl to Steve Smith, whom the Indian pacer eventually dismissed few balls later.

Siraj and Bumrah dismantled the Aussies top and middle order, but the hosts fought hard on the back of Marnus Labuschagne (70) and Pat Cummins (41).

Tailenders Nathan Lyon (41 not out) and Scott Boland (10 not out) extended Australia's lead to 333 at stumps on Sunday. The duo will resume on Day 5, having already put on a 55-run stand for the final wicket.

India will need the biggest successful fourth-innings run chase at the MCG on Monday if they are to win the Boxing Day Test after a thrilling Day 4 play.

The previous highest successful fourth innings score to win a Test at the MCG was England's 332/7 over Australia back in 1928.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is currently locked at 1-1 as the two teams are fighting for the World Test Championship final spot scheduled to be played at Lord's in June 2025.

Australia are in a strong position to finish in top-two. They will also tour Sri Lanka next year for an additional two Tests, meaning they could theoretically draw 2-2 with India and stay in contention for a place in the final.

India, on the other hand, need to win the ongoing and final Test against Australia to ensure qualification. Any other outcome, however, would leave their fate dependent on other results to reach the finale at Lord's.

Watch: Bumrah's Ripper Shatters Konstas' Stumps, Don't Miss His Celebration

The Jasprit Bumrah vs Sam Konstas Round 2 turned about to be an thrilling one yet again after the first round was won by the Australian debutant. Up against each other on Day 4 of the fourth Test in Melbourne, Bumrah and Khawaja had fans glued to their TV sets early morning on Sunday. While Konstas didn't have to wait for long before opening his account, it was Bumrah who emerged triumphant in the individual battle, bowling out the young opener with a peach of a delivery. Konstas had no answer to Bumrah's inswinger as the delivery breached his defence and hit the middle stump.

Usually a calm and composed performer, Bumrah produced an emphatic celebration after finding the gap between Konstas bat and pad. The marquee India pacer seemingly mocked Konstas, copying the latter's crowd-engaging act which he was doing repeatedly over the first three days of the game.

Here's a look at certain posts, explaining Bumrah's celebration. Even Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals decided to have a say on the social media chatter around Bumrah's dismissal.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 369 in their first innings with Nitish Kumar Reddy scoring 114 as Australia took a 105-run lead in the fourth Test. Reddy made his runs off 189 balls with 11 fours and one six and was the last wicket to fall, caught by Mitchell Starc off Nathan Lyon in only the fourth over of the day.

For Australia, Pat Cummins (3/89), Scott Boland (3/57) and Nathan Lyon (3/96) were the pick of the bowlers.

Ravi Shastri Calls For Promotion Of Nitish Reddy In Batting Order

Impressed by Nitish Reddy's sensational maiden century, former coach Ravi Shastri on Saturday advocated for his promotion in the batting order, suggesting that a top-six position would provide better balance to India going into the fifth and final Test. The 21-year-old Reddy showed tremendous grit, scoring a dogged 105 not out at number 8 to virtually bail India out on the third day of the Boxing Day Test. "I feel that the way he's batted, this is the last time he will bat at 7," Shastri told Star Sports. "To get the balance of the side, you need him to go higher up the order, either 5 or 6 and then you have the opportunity of playing 5 bowlers to take the 20 wickets, and he's given that kind of confidence to the selectors and the team management and the captain." India's batting has looked brittle, especially with skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant struggling to score runs in the five-Test series so far.

Throwing his weight behind Nitish, Shastri added, "Reddy is fully capable of batting in the top 6. Then it changes the whole balance of the game.

"You go to Sydney with him batting in the top 6, and you're playing five bowlers." On Sunday, India will resume at 358 for nine, still trailing by 119 runs against Australia's first-innings score of 474.

1st Test: Mohammad Abbas, Khurram Shahzad Rock South Africa At Start Of Chase

Pakistan opening bowlers Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad struck three blows late on the third afternoon as South Africa set out in pursuit of 148 runs to win the first Test at SuperSport Park on Saturday. South Africa were reeling at 27 for three at the close, 121 runs short of a victory which would clinch them a place in the World Test championship final in England next June. Abbas took two wickets for three runs in four immaculate overs of swing bowling, dismissing Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs, while Shahzad trapped Ryan Rickelton.

Aiden Markram, South Africa's top scorer in the first innings, was unbeaten on 22 going into what could be a nervy fourth day for the hosts.

All three wickets were leg before wicket decisions - and all three were reviewed.

De Zorzi batted outside his crease in an attempt to counter the swing which undid him in the first innings - but Abbas beat his inside edge and he was given out.

He reviewed umpire Alex Wharf's decision but replays showed the impact was "umpire's call", with the ball going on to hit the stumps, and he had to go for two runs.

Rickelton failed to score before he was trapped by Shahzad and Stubbs made one before falling to Abbas - with Pakistan successfully reviewing on both occasions after the batsmen were initially given not out.

It was a dramatic end to a day on which the start was delayed by three hours because of rain.

South Africa seemed well on target for victory when Pakistan were bowled out for 237, with left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen taking six for 52.

Saud Shakeel made 84 for Pakistan.

Resuming at 88 for three, Babar Azam and the left-handed Shakeel batted confidently, adding another 65 runs in 14.5 overs.

Babar made 50, his first half-century in 19 Test innings, before Jansen had a burst of three wickets in 14 balls, starting when Babar slapped a short ball from Jansen to deep point.

Shakeel was ninth man out when he missed a full toss from Jansen after hitting 10 fours and a six in a 113-ball innings.

Rohit Career "Coming To An End"? 'Sad State Of Captain' Bombshell Dropped

Rohit Sharma is going through a tought time in cricket. While his captaincy during India's ongoing Test series against Australia has been receiving criticism, his batting has not been good either. He missed the first Test due to personal reasons and joined the team from the second game. Rohit scored 3 and 6 in Adelaide before disappointing with another low score, 10, in the next game in Brisbane. Come Melbourne and Rohit's poor form continued here as well. He was dismissed for 3 runs off 5 balls. What looked poorer was the manner in which he got out. It was a harmless short of length ball outside off stump from Pat Cummins, and Rohit, in an attempt to pull it, got a top edge only to give an easy catch to Scott Boland close to the mid-on region.

Rohit has scored only 22 runs across 4 innings in the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia. Reacting to the batter's form, ex-Australia players Mark Waugh and Kerry O'Keeffe expressed worry for the India captain.

"Unless Rohit Sharma can do something in the last three innings, I think his career could certainly be coming to an end," Waugh said on Fox Sports.

"That was a really big mistake from Rohit Sharma. It is a nothing shot. It is one of his favourite shots, Rohit Sharma, the swivel-pull. It was too early in the innings. He has not got used to the pace or the bounce. It is a sad state for the Indian captain," said Kerry O'Keeffe.

It is interesting to note that KL Rahul opened the batting for India in the first Test vs Australia in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Once the regular captain was back in the playing XI, he opted to bat at number 6 and let Rahul continue as an opener. However, in the fourth Test, there was a change in plan as Rohit went out to open the batting with Yashashvi Jaiswal with Rahul coming in at number 3 spot. To make things look worse, both Rohit and Rahul failed to play a noticeable knock.

4th Test Day 3 Live: India Eye Fight Back, Australia Aim To Tighten Grip

India vs Australia 4th Test, Day 3 Live Updates: Focus and pressure both will be on the pair of Rishabh Pant (6 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (4 not out) on Saturday when the duo will resume the Indian innings at the score of 164 for 5 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Both Pant and Jadeja are new to the crease, having faced only 7 balls each. On the other hand, Australia will be keen to take some early wickets on the third day to put more pressure on India. On Day 2, India were in control at one stage, having scored 153 for 2, but Yashasvi Jaiswal's run-out helped Australia bounce back in the game. Given the hosts scored a massive total of 474 in their first innings, India still trail the side by 310 runs. (Live Scorecard)

Test Records For Zimbabwe And Sean Williams As Afghanistan Toil

Zimbabwe and their veteran batter Sean Williams created Test records on Friday against Afghanistan, who trailed by 491 runs after the second day of the first Test in Bulawayo. Resuming on 363 for four, the home side were all out for 586 at Queens Sports Club in the southern city. Afghanistan were 95 for two off 30 overs in reply when bad light stopped play. The Zimbabwe first innings total was their highest in a Test, bettering 563 for nine against the West Indies in Harare 23 years ago. It was the sixth Zimbabwe innings to exceed 500 runs. Having made 145 runs on the first day, Williams added nine more before being caught by Rahmat Shah close to the boundary line off a Naveed Zadran bouncer.  His 154 overtook a previous best of 151 not out, also against Afghanistan, in Abu Dhabi three years ago. Williams, batting at No. 4, struck three sixes and 10 fours off 174 balls in a 266-minute stand in the city where he was born. It was his fourth century in six Tests.

His partnerships included 163 for the fifth wicket with captain Craig Ervine, who went on to make 104, including 10 fours, before his inside edge was snapped up by wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai.

"If I can lead by example and not by talking I believe my young teammates will learn quickly," said 38-year-old Williams.

Zimbabwe fielded three debutants, including 68-run opener Ben Curran, and three others are making just their second Test appearances.

Middle-order Brian Bennett was another Zimbabwe centurion, hitting a brisk unbeaten 110 that included four sixes and five fours.

Teenage spinner Allah Ghazanfar was the most successful Afghanistan bowler, but his three wickets proved expensive as he conceded 127 runs.

The Afghanistan innings began disastrously with Test newcomer Sediqullah Atal out for three in the second over after a Trevor Gwandu delivery uprooted his middle stump.

Fellow opener Abdul Malik was dismissed for 23 before Shah patiently built an unbeaten 49 that included a six and five fours. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was 16 not out.

Both teams are seeking a first Test victory since beating each other three years ago.

Indian Players Wear Black Armband In Memory Of Manmohan Singh

The Indian cricket team sported black armbands on the second day of the fourth Test against Australia to honour former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who died in New Delhi. Singh, a two-time former prime minister from 2004 to 2014, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday after losing consciousness at his home owing to age-related ailments. He was 92.

"The Indian team is wearing black arm bands as a mark of respect in the memory of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away," the BCCI said in a statement.

Singh, also a renowned economist, was the architect and the brainchild of economic reforms in 1991 that pulled India from the brink of bankruptcy and ushered in an era of economic liberalisation that is widely believed to have changed the course of India's economic trajectory Australia resumed day two at 311 for 6 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

4th Test Day 2 Live: Skipper Rohit's Confusing Call Triggers Questions

India vs Australia 4th Test Day 2 Live Updates: India captain Rohit Sharma's confusing call to start with Mohammed Siraj before replacing him just one over later with Jasprit Bumrah baffles many. Steve Smith, on the other hand, is cruising towards a century with some fine stroke-play in the morning session of Day 2 of the 4th Test in Melbourne. Bumrah's three wickets on the opening day helped India make a comeback in the game, but Australia still managed to finish the day in a good position, thanks to fifties from Sam Konstas (60), Usman Khawaja (57), Marnus Labuschagne (72) and Steve Smith. India's Sports Community Mourns Dr Manmohan Singh's Demise

India's sports fraternity on Thursday joined the nation in mourning the demise of two-time former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, paying homage to his "calm leadership and wisdom" in stirring condolence messages. Singh, 92, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here after losing consciousness at his home owing to age-related ailments. "Sad news of the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. A visionary leader and a true statesman who worked tirelessly for India's progress. His wisdom and humility will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones," World Cup-winning former cricketer Yuvraj Singh posted on X.

Similar sentiments were expressed by his former teammate and Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha member Harbhajan Singh, who described Singh as a thorough gentleman and visionary leader.

"What truly set him apart was his calm and steady leadership in times of crisis, his ability to navigate complex political landscapes, and his unwavering belief in India's potential," he wrote.

It was during Singh's second tenure that India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the national capital.

It was the first international multi-sport extravaganza to be held in the country after the 1982 Asian Games, also hosted by Delhi.

Former wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who is now a Congress MLA in Haryana, called Singh a man of "extraordinary wisdom, simplicity and vision." "Dr. Manmohan Singh was not just a Prime Minister, but he was a thinker, economist and a true patriot. His calm leadership style and economic vision gave the country a new direction, from the 1991 economic reforms to establishing India's reputation on the global stage.

"There was depth in his humility and wisdom in his every word. His services and contributions to the country will always be remembered. You will always live in our hearts, Sir," she wrote in her emotional tribute on social media.

Former cricketers Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman and ex-women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal were also among those who expressed their sadness at his death.

Before serving as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Singh was finance minister in the P V Narasimha Rao-led government and was the brain behind the economic reforms of 1991 that marked the beginning of liberalisation in the country.

Widely respected for his intellect and grace in public life, Singh had retired from active politics in April this year after over a three-decade run as a Rajya Saha MP.

Video: Kohli's Act To Unsettle Konstas Leads To Heated Clash On Field

It isn't common for a debutant to play as fearlessly as Australia's Sam Konstas did en route to his 52-ball half-century against India on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Konstas hit some exquisite T20-styled shots early in the innings to unnerve the Indian pacers, especially Jasprit Bumrah. Seeing Konstas bat in 6th gear, Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli looked to get on his nerves in the middle. In the first session, Kohli seemed to have given Konstas a shoulder push, with the aim being to unsettle the 19-year-old batter.

Kohli, and Konstas' altercation in the middle became a heated affair, prompting other players and umpires to intervene. The move, however, didn't affect the Australian opener's mindset by any means, as he continued to bat with the same intensity, bringing up his maiden half-century.

Konstas became the fourth youngest Test debutant for Australia on Thursday as he received his baggy green cap from former Aussie skipper Mark Taylor at the age of 19 years and 85 days on Thursday.

Ian Craig tops the list after he played his maiden game for the Aussies in 1953 at the age of 17 years 239 days. Skipper Pat Cummins holds the second place on the chart as he made his debut at the age of 18 years and 193 days in 2011. Tom Garrett stands in third place and Clem Hill holds the fifth place on the chart.

Featuring for the Prime Minister's XI in a two-day game against the touring Indians after the Perth Test, Konstas attracted the spotlight with a century against the visiting side.

In his 11 first-class matches Konstas has scored 718 runs at an average of 42.2, including two centuries and three half-centuries.

In the ongoing Sheffield Shield season, Konstas is the fifth-highest run-getter with 471 runs in five matches at an average of 58.87, including two centuries and a fifty, with a best score of 152.

Kambli 'Stable' After Major Health Scare, Receives Rs 5 Lakh Aid From...

Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Thane district, developed a fever on Tuesday, but his condition was stable, doctors treating him said on Tuesday. Kambli (52) is responding to the treatment for urinary tract infections for which he was admitted at Akruti Hospital near Bhiwandi town on Saturday (December 21), Dr Vivek Trivedi told PTI. Trivedi is heading the medical team that is supervising the former cricketer's health. Doctors were planning to do an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) on the former India batter, but since he has developed a fever, a decision on the non-invasive medical procedure will be taken later, he said. The MRI procedure has been necessitated after a series of medical examinations conducted earlier revealed clots in his brain, Trivedi said.

Kambli is likely to be shifted out of the ICU within a day or two and discharged after about four days, he said.

He said the condition of the Mumbai-based former cricketer was critical four days back when he had an extreme urinary infection as puss had got collected in his bladder. The puss was removed when he was admitted to the hospital.

Remaining at home for some more days would have complicated his condition, Trivedi opined, adding his blood pressure was also fluctuating when he was brought to the hospital.

His condition was stable at present, the doctor added.

"His condition will be closely monitored for the next 24 hours and a decision taken on shifting him out of the ICU," he added.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Shrikant Shinde Foundation, run by his MP-son, have stepped forward to assist Kambli.

On the instructions of Eknath Shinde, his Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Mangesh Chiwte visited the hospital to enquire about the former cricketer's health condition, said an official release issued by the deputy CM's office in Thane on Tuesday night.

Chiwte also engaged with the hospital's medical staff to ensure Kambli receives the best possible care during his treatment.

Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde, the son of Eknath Shinde, announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for Kambli. The assistance will be provided through the Dr Shrikant Shinde Foundation next week, the release said.

Additionally, Shrikant Shinde has assured Kambli and his family of further support in the days to come, according to OSD Chiwte.

Kambli expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state's sensitive leadership, particularly Eknath Shinde, who is an MLA from Thane district, and Shrikant Shinde, for their support and concern for him. The former cricketer also expressed a desire to personally meet the Deputy CM to thank him for the support extended during his time of need, said the release.

Eknath and Shrikant Shinde are expected to visit him at the hospital soon, it said.

Rohit Left Irritated By Fan's 'Gill' Request During Practice. His Reply...

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma was left irritated by a fan's request during practice at the Melbourne Cricket Ground ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Australia starting Thursday. With the series tied at 1-1 after three matches, this match is extremely important when it comes to the World Test Championship (WTC) Final dreams for both sides. Just after practice ended on Tuesday, a female fan repeatedly urged Rohit to call Shubman Gill and said that she was his fan. In a video by Revsportz, Rohit was seen gesturing towards the fan to come back later as Gill had already finished his training. However, the fan kept shouting for Gill prompting Rohit to respond loudly - “Kaha se lau? (where will I get him?)”

The trio of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant is aboard "the same boat" when it comes to erratic form in the ongoing Test series against Australia but skipper Rohit Sharma feels none of them should be "overburdened" with suggestions as it would complicate matters.

Save Jaiswal's 161 in the second innings in the opening Test in Perth, white-ball vice-captain Gill and maverick match-winner Pant have endured poor scores in the three Tests so far.

Jaiswal's struggles in the first innings are well-documented while Gill and Pant have been frittering away good starts.

"All these boys like Gill, Jaiswal and Pant are all in the same boat. (They know) what they are capable of doing, we shouldn't complicate those things," Rohit was categorical in his assessment ahead of Boxing Day Test here when asked individually about the troika which will form the core of Indian batting in the next decade.

The soon-to-be 23 Jaiswal didn't have any double-digit score in the first innings of either Perth, Adelaide or Brisbane but the skipper knows the worth of his talent.

"Jaiswal is coming here for the first time. He has already shown what he is capable of. He has got so much talent, when you have a guy like him, you don't want to tamper too much with his mindset.

"Let him be as free as possible and not over-burden him with too many thoughts regarding his batting. He understands his batting more than any one of us and that's how he has played his cricket," the skipper stood firmly behind his young colleague.

As R Ashwin's Replacement, BCCI Failed To Get This Star. Reason Is...

Mumbai off-spinner Tanush Kotian was on Monday added to India's squad for the remaining two Tests in Australia as a replacement for the recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin. "The Men's Selection Committee has named all-rounder Tanush Kotian as an addition to India's squad for the fourth and fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy," the BCCI said in a statement. The 26-year-old Kotian, who was part of India A's tour of Australia, has also been added as a cover for Washington Sundar.

"Kotian has been added as a safety net and to keep the squad number intact for the last two games. He only comes into the picture if either among Washy or Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) gets injured," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Kotian, who is currently in Ahmedabad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, is expected to leave Mumbai on Tuesday and will reach Melbourne before the start of the Boxing Day Test. The bowling all-rounder picked two wickets and scored an unbeaten 39 for Mumbai in their Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Hyderabad on Monday.

Kotian has fond memories of the Melbourne Cricket Ground where he scored 44 batting at No. 8 for India A and looked the part. Kotian has played 33 first-class matches, taking 101 wickets at an average of 25.70.

In addition to his bowling achievements, Kotian has three five-wicket hauls and has scored two centuries and 13 half-centuries.

He also played a pivotal role in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy 2023-24 triumph. He was awarded the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding all-round performance, which included 502 runs at an average of 41.83 and 29 wickets at an average of 16.96.

Originally, Axar Patel was supposed to be summoned to Australia but as per sources, the left-arm spinner had sought a break after the first two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to a family commitment.

Kotian has been added to the squad following Ashwin's surprise retirement from international cricket following the drawn Test in Brisbane. The 38-year-old ended his glorious career as the second-highest wicket-taker for India behind Anil Kumble.

Josh Hazlewood's Replacement Gears Up For 4th Test With This Training Drill

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is where Scott Boland truly feels at home. Out of his 40 Test wickets so far, the most memorable debut came at this very ground. Boland's first impression was so strong that it remains the most lasting one to date -- blowing away England with figures of 6 for 7 in the second innings during his debut, buoyed by his loyal supporters. Now, as another Boxing Day Test approaches at the 'G', Boland is ready to step in once again for Josh Hazlewood, continuing the role of the perfect first substitute that has defined his 11-Test career.

And just like a true workhorse, his practice sessions are as regimented as they come. On Monday, during Australia's first session ahead of the fourth Test, Boland's focus was clear.

Known for hitting hard lengths, Boland practiced single-net spot bowling without any batters. His aim was to fine-tune the length ideal for the MCG track.

Boland is not a conventional swing bowler and relies more on pace and movement off the track, striving to hit the good length area, typically around five metres.

With assistant coach Daniel Vettori present, Boland was seen trying to land the ball on four yellow cones placed approximately five metres from the batter's popping crease. For some time, he tried to hit the hard length but there were a few over-pitched deliveries, falling into what could be considered a drivable length.

After few deliveries, Boland went back to his run-up and had a chat with Vettori. While the discussion's content couldn't be deciphered from a distance, Boland could be seen walking down the track to readjust the cones. This time, they were placed about seven metres away, slightly back of the length.

During the session, Boland bowled that length more consistently, generating steep bounce, which could spell trouble for the Indian batters.

Smith, Labuschagne slog it out; Webster in better touch than Marsh

With literally no gap between his feet, Steve Smith's stance looked unconventional and far from aesthetically pleasing, but no one can question the man who has 33 Test hundreds to his name.

As usual, Smith faced an extended session of throwdowns. Despite his laboured century in Brisbane, which must have boosted his confidence, his net session didn't quite reflect that.

After being bowled by a throwdown, Smith cursed himself loudly and seemed ready to smash the wicket in frustration.

At the other end, Marnus Labuschagne played and missed repeatedly, remaining busy as pressure mounts on George Bailey's selection committee to consider new options for his position.

But perhaps the middle order replacements currently available may not be half as good as Labuschagne.

Mitchell Marsh, too, had a tough time. Clean bowled once, Marsh didn't look as comfortable as Beau Webster as they took turns to bat in the same net. While Webster's footwork was assured and he carried an air of confidence, Marsh looked more circumspect in comparison.

Kohli Labelled 'Bully' Over Argument With Female Reporter: "Berated Her..."

Star India batter Virat Kohli has been labelled as "bully" after his recent argument with a female journalist earlier this week. This comes after Kohli lashed out at Nat Yoannidis, a local journalist upon landing with his family at the Melbourne Airport. Kohli was seemingly unhappy with the journalist for filming his kids without his permission, citing privacy concerns. The 36-year-old had also warned Indian journalist in the past, against clicking pictures of his son and daughter. However, this rule doesn't apply in Australia as the journalist are free to record and click pictures of the celebrities.

Kohli urged the journalist to delete the images and videos of his kids, but asked her to keep his solo ones. He was also seen shaking hands with the journalists upon getting assurance that they were not filming his kids.

Now, a Nine Sports journalist has lashed out at Kohli, labelling the former India captain as a "bully". He slammed Kohli for "berating" the female reporter.

"Nat was out there with a cameraman, a Channel 7 reporter was out there with his cameraman and they were doing what we do on a daily basis essentially, and that's be at the airport to actually get identities, whether they're politicians, whether they're sporting identities or whatever. He took umbrage, he being Virat Kohli, to the fact the cameras were focused on him," Jones was quoted as saying by Daily Mail.

"Well duh! You're a batting superstar, you're a global superstar in the world of cricket, and he takes umbrage to the fact that the attention is focused on him. What really got my back up when I saw the footage was that he turned around to the three blokes, the two cameramen and the reporter from Channel 7, and said you guys are OK, it's her," he added.

"Really? Big tough man, Virat. And then he stood over this girl, Nat Yoannidis, who's about five foot one, five foot two, and just absolutely berated her. You're nothing but a bully, Virat," a fuming Jones said.

"You Bowled A Carrom Ball": PM Modi's Writes Emotional Letter To R Ashwin

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement announcement left every cricket fan across the world stunned. Still one of the best spinners in the game, Ashwin called time on his international career midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. As the Brisbane Test concluded, there was a sense of sorrow in the Indian camp, with Ashwin deciding to hang his boots. Even his teammates in the Indian dressing room were caught off-guard by the announcement. As Ashwin prepares for another chapter in his career, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a heartfelt letter to the iconic spinner who emerged as one of the country's biggest match-winners in the longest format of the game.

In his letter, PM Modi wrote how Ashwin's retirement announcement felt like a 'carrom ball'. From emerging as one of the highest wicket-takers for India in international cricket to the personal sacrifices made, PM Modi paid his gratitude to the off-spinner from Tamil Nadu for everything he did for the game and his country.

Here's the full text of PM Modi's letter to R Ashwin:

I hope that this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The announcement of your retirement from international cricket surprised fans in India and across the world. At a time when everyone was looking forward to many more off-breaks, you bowled a carrom ball that bowled everyone. However, everyone understands that this must have been a hard decision for you as well, especially after the outstanding career you have had playing for India.

Please accept my heartiest congratulations on a career that has been full of brilliance, hard work and putting the team above everything else.

As you bid farewell to international cricket, jersey number 99 will be sorely missed. Cricket lovers will miss the sense of expectation they felt when you took to the crease to bowl - there was always a feeling that you were weaving a web around the opponents which would trap a victim any moment. You possessed an uncanny ability to outwit batsmen with good old off-spin as well as innovative variations, as the situation demanded.

Each one of the 765 international wickets that you took across all formats was special. Holding the record of having the highest number of Player of the Series awards in Test matches shows the impact you had on the team's success in Tests over the last many years.

As a young prospect, you took a five-wicket haul on Test debut and went on to be a part of the ODI World Cup winning squad in 2011. By the time you bowled the team to victory in the last over of the Champions Trophy in 2013, you had become a key member of the team. Later, you played a crucial role as a senior in the team through multiple victories in all formats of the game. As a player who has been the ICC Cricketer of the Year, you have also won international acclaim and universal respect.

You have showcased your all-round prowess by scoring a century and taking five wickets in the same match, many times. With the bat in hand, too, you have given our nation many memories including the brave match-saving innings in Sydney in 2021.

Often people are remembered for some wonderful shot that they played. But you have the unique distinction of being remembered for both a shot and a leave in the legendary match of the WT20 in 2022. Your winning shot elicited great cheers. The way you left the ball before it, allowing it on its way to becoming a wide ball, showed your presence of mind.

Even during moments of adversity, your sincerity and commitment came to the fore. We all remember the way you flew back to contribute to the team even when your mother was hospitalised and the time you kept playing against South Africa even when you couldn't get in touch with your family during the floods in Chennai.

As one observes your career, your flexibility and adaptability stand out. The way you tailored your approach to suit various formats of the game was an asset to the team. I wonder if your education as an engineer helped you in the meticulous and detail-oriented approach that you are famous for. Many analysts and peers have praised your sharp cricketing brain. I am confident that such knowledge will come of use to youngsters of future generations.

The wit and warmth that you bring to your conversations have been appreciated by fans. I hope that you will continue to post 'Kutti Stories' on cricket, sports and life in general.

As an ambassador of the game both on and off the field, you have made the nation and your family proud. I take this opportunity to congratulate your parents, your wife Prithi and your daughters as well. Their sacrifices and support, I am sure, have been crucial to your growth as a cricketer and as a person. I hope that you get to spend more time with them, something that you would have looked forward to all these years.

May you find ways to continue contributing to the game that you dearly love.

Once again, heartiest congratulations on an illustrious career an wishes for the future.

Shastri Lauds Bumrah For "Single Handedly" Keeping India In Series vs Aus

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the Rohit Sharma-led side was justified in celebrating on avoiding the follow-on during the rain-hit third Test against Australia in Brisbane, which led to the five-match series being locked at 1-1. On Day Four of the match at the Gabba, Akash Deep sliced a Pat Cummins delivery over the gully for a boundary, which helped India avoid the follow-on, leading to jubilant celebrations in the dressing room by captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli.

While many in the Australian camp were surprised by it, Shastri felt there was nothing bad about it. “You should celebrate. It required a lot of character from the last pair with 35-36 runs needed. That celebration showed they knew the importance of that effort within the dressing room in the context of the series.”

“It's one thing following-on, it's one thing then again being 2-3 down as opposed to, you going ahead and rattling the Australian top-order. It is fully justified,” said Shastri on the ICC Review show.

Talking about the scenes in Brisbane, Shastri recalled the 89-run partnership between Bumrah and Mohammed Shami at the Lord's during the 2021 series against England, a match which India eventually won. He also highlighted the importance of lower-order bailing India out of tough situations.

“It reminded me of the celebration, in COVID times when Jasprit and Mohammed Shami were involved in a partnership at the Lord's, which turned the game on its head. England were odds-on favourites on the final day to win the Test. And that partnership, I think of about 80 or 90, suddenly turned the game on its head, and by the end of the day, India had won the Test match.”

“When the tail-enders are stubborn, they fight it out there. It makes a massive difference. It did it on the last tour. When Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari batted the whole of the last session to save the game, going into the Gabba and then winning the series.”

With the five-match series tied at 1-1 ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, Shastri feels the fight shown by India in avoiding the follow-on at Brisbane will serve as a big boost to the visitors ahead of the crunch games.

“It'll lift the Indian team. And for me, the series is on a level peg now and India might just be calling the shots. Massive. They would give anything for a 1-1 result. The first Test was in Perth, the second Testa day-nighter in Adelaide, and then the third Test was in Brisbane. Any overseas team will, you know, settle for a 1-1 score because come Melbourne, come Sydney, I think India will be powerful.”

“They've been kept in this series single-handedly by Jasprit Bumrah. If the big boys wake up, and step up to the plate, which I just get the gut feeling they will, then Australia have a problem on their hands. Yeah, they got out of jail but they are not on bail. They are free birds in Melbourne. They can do what they want and come and attack Australia on Boxing Day,” he concluded.

Final List Of Candidates For BCCI Secretary Elections To Be Out On January 7

A.K. Joti, Electoral Officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has said the final list of candidates for the secretary and treasurer's posts in the by-election will be announced on January 7 at 5 pm. The nomination window for the candidates is slated for January 3 and 4. IANS had previously reported that in a notice issued to state associations on Saturday afternoon, joint secretary Devajit Saikia said the SGM will be held at 12 noon on January 12 at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to elect a new secretary and treasurer.

Incidentally, Saikia is serving as acting secretary, after BCCI president Roger Binny exercised his special powers granted in the constitution. Article 7.2 (d) in the BCCI constitution goes as "The President shall, in the event of a vacancy, or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases."

The elections for twin vacancies have come up in the BCCI after Jay Shah left the secretary's post to take charge as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this month. Later, treasurer Ashish Shelar stepped down from his role in the BCCI after he was included as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra state government.

As per the notice for by-election issued by Joti on Saturday evening, the scrutiny of the nominations will be done on January 6 from 11 am to 1 pm. Withdrawal of nominations can be done on January 7 from 11 am to 2 pm. The final list of candidates will be announced at 5 pm on the same day. The elections will be held on January 12 and will be followed by the announcement of results on the same day.

In the nomination form, a person's candidature is deemed to be valid if the person: has not attained the age of 70 years, has not been a Minister or a Government Servant, and has not been convicted by a Court of Law for commission of a criminal offence and sentenced to imprisonment. The candidate has also been asked to specify that he/she is not required to undergo a cooling off period of three years in accordance with the board's Rules and Regulations, and should not have held any position as an Office-bearer of the BCCI for a Cumulative period of nine years.

As of now, there has been no definitive word over who could be the successors to the posts left vacant by Shah and Shelar. But with the election notice given out, it means there is ample time to decide who will emerge as suitable candidates for the two vacant office-bearers' posts in the BCCI.

BCCI Elections Timeline, as given by Electoral Officer AK Joti:

December 21: Call for Members to File Applications to Nominate their Representative

December 27: Deadline for Members to File Applications to Nominate their Representative

December 28: Release of Draft Electoral Roll

December 29 and 30: Submission of Objections to Names in the Draft Electoral Roll

January 2: (i) Examination of Objections and Decisions Thereon (ii) Release of Final Electoral Roll

January 3 & 4: Window to File Nomination Application

January 6: Scrutiny Applications and Announcement of List of Validly Nominated Candidates

January 7: Withdrawal of Nominations (in Person) and Announcement of List of Candidates

After Ashwin's Sudden Retirement, Wife Prithi's 1st Reaction: "Burden..."

For Ravichandran Ashwin, his family holds an important place. Time and again, Ashwin has elaborated the role played by his wife Prithi Narayanan and two daughters in his life. So, after Ashwin decided to bid goodbye to an illustrious cricket career, Prithi revealed in a long emotional post about what it was to see one of the greatest cricketers of the generation from such close quarters. Ashwin decided to retire from international cricket with two Tests left in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

"It has been a blurry two days for me. I have been thinking about what I can say.. Do I put this down as a tribute to my all time favorite cricketer ? Maybe I'll just take the partner angle? Or maybe a love letter from a fan girl? I guess this is a little bit of all of it," Prithi Narayanan wrote in an Instagram post.

"When I saw Ashwins PC, I thought of small and big moments. Many many memories over the last 13-14 years. The big wins , the MOS awards, the quiet silence in our room after an intense game, the sound of the shower running for much longer than usual on some evenings post play , the scratch of pencil over paper as he scribbled thoughts down, the constant streaming of footage videos when he is making a game plan, the calm of meditative breathing before leaving for each game, certain songs playing on repeat while he unwinds.

"The times we weeped in joy - after the CT final, after the MCG win, after the Sydney draw, The Gabba win, after making a comeback in T20s...the times we sat in silence and the times when we had our hearts broken."

Prithi went on to describe what it was like to witness Ashwin's journey from a close quarter.

"Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure. The world you introduced me to gave me the privilege to watch and enjoy a sport that I love from close quarters," she wrote.

"It also showed me how much passion, hard work and discipline is needed to keep your head above water. And sometimes even that is not enough. I remember us talking about why you, R Ashwin, had to do all of this and a lot more to even stay relevant in the scheme of things. How awards, the best of stats, the POMs, the accolades, the records didn't matter if you didn't sharpen your skill sets constantly and did not put in the work. Sometimes, nothing is enough.

"As you end your wonderful international run, I only want to tell you that it's all good.It is all going to be good.It is time to set the burden of being you down. Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing, share memes all day, create a new bowling variation, bug our kids out of their minds. Just do it all"

Harbhajan Clears Air On Reported Rift With Ashwin, Says 'If People Make...'

India's spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin called time on his international cricket career on Wednesday. It came as a shocking announcement from Ashwin, who too even felt that "there's still a bit of cricket left" in him. After the player's retirement, another great spinner from India, Harbhajan Singh heaped praises on the bowler. He also cleared air on the rumoured rift between him and Ashwin. Harbhajan stated there is nothing wrong between the two. He added that his statements on social media are twisted to make it look like that he has a problem with Ashwin.

"I read social media only as much as I need to. If there is a standoff between me and Ashwin or if there was ever any fight, quarrel or disagreement, I would be the first person to go up to him and ask what the issue is. But it was never like this and it will never be like this because whatever is in his destiny, he will get it and I got whatever was in my destiny. He has been a phenomenal bowler for India. I am very happy for his achievement," said Harbhajan in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

"If people twist things on Twitter and make it seem as if I have a problem with Ashwin, then it's their point of view. I am a little vocal about the fact that the pitches on which India play cricket are not good cricket, there is a lot of spin on these tracks and matches get over within two and a half days," he added.

Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011 against West Indies following that red-ball cricket became his forte. Ashwin featured in 106 Tests, picked up a whopping 537 wickets, including 37 five-wicket hauls, and amassed 3,503 runs.

In Tests, Ashwin appeared in 23 matches against Australia and picked up 115 wickets at an economy rate of 2.71.

The 38-year-old also holds the record for most wickets taken in a single Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He picked up 29 wickets in the 2020-21 edition of the prestigious series.

In the long format, Ashwin holds plenty of records which are hard to be broken. The spinner holds the landmark of fastest Indian to claim 350 Test wickets. He is also India's second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests, with 537 scalps at an economy rate of 2.83.

Sediqullah Atal Century Helps Afghanistan Crush Zimbabwe In Second ODI

Sediqullah Atal scored his maiden one-day international century as Afghanistan crushed Zimbabwe by 232 runs in Harare on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Atal (104) and Abdul Malik (84) put on 191 runs for the first wicket and an unbeaten 29 from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi lifted the tourists to 286-6 off 50 overs. Zimbabwe, who won the toss, were in trouble from the outset when replying with Ben Curran run out off the final ball of the first over.

Only Sikandar Raza (19 not out) and Sean Williams (16) reached double figures and the home team were bundled out for 54 in 17.5 overs at Harare Sports Club.

Afghan bowlers Allah Ghazanfar (3-9), Naveed Zadran (3-13) and Fazalhaq Farooqi (2-15) wreaked havoc.

"I am very happy with my performance and that of the team. We won a fantastic game of cricket," said player-of-the-match Atal.

"Abdul and I coped well. We supported each other and that is why we did well and the team did well. I did become a little nervous as the century drew near."

Shahidi said: "I was very impressed with the way the openers batted. The credit goes to them. We outclassed them in all departments.

"When batting, I found the wicket a bit tricky. I believed we had enough runs to win. We gave 100 percent and did well.

"Everyone takes responsibility in this team and everyone knows their role. We want to carry on with performances like this."

Atal, a 23-year-old who made his ODI debut last month, struck four sixes and eight fours in his 128-ball knock before becoming a victim of Newman Nyamhuri (3-53).

Malik also fell to Nyamhuri, making his second ODI appearance, after an innings that included a six and 11 fours.

It was another dark day for Zimbabwe in the 50-over format after the first match against Afghanistan two days ago was called off after just one hour due to rain.

Zimbabwe share with the United States the unwanted record of the lowest ODI international score having made just 35 against Sri Lanka in Harare in 2004.

Their 38, against Sri Lanka in Colombo, and 44 against Bangladesh in Chattogram are among the seven lowest ODI scores.

Uncertainty, Injury, Family's Advice: Behind Ashwin's Retirement Decision

Ravichandran Ashwin's decision to retire midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 has caught many people by surprise. The 38-year-old called time on an illustrious career on Wednesday, having picked up 537 games in 106 Tests. Now, reports have revealed that Ashwin's decision has been to do with two factors - injury problems and his future in India's Test team. Reportedly, Ashwin was contemplating his retirement prior to the first Test in Perth, but had not finalised his decision yet. Ashwin had informed his family of the retirement decision just the night before.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Ashwin's persistent knee problem had forced him to contemplate retirement ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Along with that, Ashwin has also likely taken his decision keeping in mind his future with Team India in Test cricket.

Ashwin has played only one out of the three Tests so far in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, seeing himself out of favour for both Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the other two games. The report suggests that Ashwin's injury struggles at the age of 38 and him not being a consistent starter in overseas conditions led to the abrupt decision.

The report states that Ashwin had informed his family that he was considering retirement before heading to Australia for the first Test, to which his family had advised him to think through. Once Ashwin made the decision, his family only reportedly got to know on Tuesday night.

The report also states that each player of the current Indian team had been informed separately by Ashwin about his retirement, and the general response from his teammates was shock.

Ashwin's final Test was the pink-ball second Test in Adelaide, which India lost by 10 wickets. Ashwin took a single wicket, that of Mitchell Marsh, finishing with figures of 1/53 in 18 overs.
