Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in Pune on Monday to record their third win of the World Cup and maintain their hopes of a semi-final place. Set 242 to win after a disciplined bowling display, Afghanistan finished on 242-3, with Azmatullah Omarzai unbeaten on 73 and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi 58 not out, the pair sharing an unbroken stand of 111. Afghanistan now have six points and sit in fifth place in the table, two behind New Zealand and Australia with the top four guaranteed to make the semi-finals. (World Cup points table)
Victory also meant Afghanistan, who'd already beaten champions England, had won back-to-back matches at the World Cup for the first time after they defeated Pakistan by eight wickets last time out.
Prior to this edition, they had managed just one win -- against non-Test nation Scotland in 2015 -- from their appearances at two previous World Cups.
Yet they have now beaten three World Cup winners in England, 1992 champions Pakistan and 1996 kings Sri Lanka. An impressive all-round effort was set up by recalled left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi's 4-34 in 10 overs as Sri Lanka were held to 241.
Shahidi and Omarzai saw their team home with nearly five overs to spare. Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz just four balls into their chase when he was bowled by a swinging delivery from Dilshan Madushanka.
But Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah (62) then shared a stand of 73. Omarzai added fresh impetus with three sixes in a run-a-ball fifty.
Shahidi had got to the landmark in 67 balls but his runs were just as valuable all the same. Sri Lanka, who've now lost four of their six matches, missed a couple of chances and their day was summed up when Omarzai scored the winning run after being dropped at deep midwicket.
Victory was another notable triumph for Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott, with this success coming against a Sri Lanka team coached by another former England international in Chris Silverwood
Farooqi had been recalled in place of Noor Ahmad despite the teenage spinner's three wickets against Pakistan. But on a pitch offering less turn, Afghanistan's judgement was vindicated as Farooqi struck throughout the innings, while off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman kept things tight with 2-38 in 10.
Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka made 46 but no other batsman managed more than skipper Kusal Mendis' (39) after they were sent into bat.
Nissanka, fresh from his unbeaten 77 in an eight-wicket rout of England, was in sight of his fifth fifty in six innings this World Cup. But he was caught behind for 46, trying to cut Omarzai.
Mujeeb then struck in successive balls, removing Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama (36) after both batsmen had made starts.
Farooqi then cleaned up late on, expertly yorking tailender Maheesh Theekshana (29) before he had Angelo Mathews well caught in the deep by Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi.
Team India defeated England by 100 runs to register their sixth victory on the trot at the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The hosts posted a total of 229/9 in 50 overs with skipper Rohit Sharma playing a crucial knock of 87 runs. Later, pacers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah scalped four and three wickets respectively as England got bundled out for 129. This was England's fifth defeat out of six matches, which brought them down at the bottom of the points table.
Team India has been receiving praises from all over the world for their exemplary performance in the ongoing event. Former Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis also did not shy away from praising the 2011 champions.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Waqar wrote, "Batters Win you matches but bowlers Win you Trophies. India too Hot to handle. Rohit Sharma excellent Leader."

Chasing a tricky 230 for victory in Lucknow, England collapsed to 129 all out in 34.5 overs to suffer their fifth defeat in six matches and leave their title defence at the mercy of a mathematical miracle.
The hosts have six wins in as many games and are virtually assured of a semi-final place.
Skipper Rohit Sharma led the charge with 87 as India posted 229-9, a total that looked below par but proved enough for a struggling England side on a sluggish pitch.
"It was a great performance and we would take that win any day," said man-of-the-match Rohit.
Shami returned figures of 4-22 while fellow quick Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets to wrap up the match as fireworks lit up the sky.

The battle between fans is quite common during the Cricket World Cup 2023 and it was in full display during the high-profile match between India and England in Lucknow on Sunday. It was a rare off day for Virat Kohli as he was dismissed for a duck and England's official fan army - Barmy Army - took to social media to taunt the veteran batter. While India were able to post a modest total, the bowlers were in full form and the duo of Joe Root and Ben Stokes also lost their wickets without scoring a single run. India's fan army - Bharat Army - wasted no time in coming up with hilarious replies to the earlier taunts.
Earlier, England bowlers led by David Willey kept India down to 229-9 despite skipper Rohit Sharma's 87 in a must-win Cricket World Cup 2023 match for the defending champions on Sunday.

Willey, a left-arm quick, returned figures of 3-45, including the prized wicket of Virat Kohli for a nine-ball duck, after England elected to bowl at Lucknow in search of a victory to cling on to their slim hopes of making the semi-finals.
Fast bowler Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each and a spirited performance by the fielders, who threw themselves around to stop runs, made England look a like a different side.

The 2019 champions sit bottom of the 10-team table with four defeats from five matches.
"I missed my lengths early in the tournament, and I'm my own biggest critic," Woakes said in the innings break.
"Fielding set the tone for us. It took a bit of spin, and it's a bit two-paced, but hopefully under lights it'll slide on. But we'd have taken that at the start. Hopefully we can bat well and chase it down."
Suryakumar Yadav made a fighting 49 before becoming Willey's third wicket but the tail played out the full 50 overs.
Two-time ODI World Cup winners India take on England, the reigning champions, in the 29th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on October 29 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Led by Rohit Sharma, India have won all their five matches in the tournament so far. The Indian team beat New Zealand by four wickets in their latest encounter in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Virat Kohli's 95 and Mohammed Shami's 5/54 headlined the team's commanding performance against 2019 World Cup runners-up New Zealand. India, earlier in the tournament, defeated Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Australia - all in run chases. England, on the other hand, have had a poor start to their title defence with four defeats in five matches. Their only win was a 137-run success against Bangladesh while they have lost to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The English side, however, has the upper hand against India in ICC Cricket World Cup history. England have won four and tied one of the eight matches in this fixture. India, though, lead 57-44 in overall ODI wins in this fixture.
Here are the key player battles to watch out for in the India vs England ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match:
Rohit Sharma vs Mark Wood
Rohit Sharma is India's second-highest run-getter in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with 311 runs in five matches. He boasts a strike-rate of 133.47 in the tournament, smashing 33 fours and 17 sixes so far, while averaging 62.20. Rohit will be key in neutralizing the new ball threat of England's firey pacer Mark Wood.
Rohit has scored 73 runs in 86 balls against Mark Wood in ODI cricket, hitting 12 fours and a six. Wood, meanwhile, has dismissed the Indian captain only once.
Virat Kohli vs Adil Rashid
India's leading run-scorer in this tournament is Virat Kohli with 354 runs in five matches. He slammed a century against Bangladesh while scoring fifties against Australia, Afghanistan and New Zealand.
Adil Rashid, on the other hand, is England's second-highest wicket-taker this edition with six wickets. In spin-friendly conditions at Lucknow, Rashid will be a handful for the Indian batters in the middle overs.
Virat Kohli and Adil Rashid have squared off in eight ODI innings. Kohli has scored 108 runs at a strike-rate of 93.10, including seven fours and a six. Rashid, meanwhile, has dismissed Kohli thrice with an average of 36.00.
KL Rahul vs Moeen Ali
Another key matchup in the middle overs of the Indian innings would be KL Rahul against Moeen Ali.
KL Rahul has been impressive throughout the World Cup 2023, scoring 177 runs in four innings, remaining unbeaten thrice, headlined by the match-winning 97 against Australia. He has notched 708 runs in 18 ODIs in 2023, smashing five half-centuries and one ton. The BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow is also where KL Rahul plays franchise T20 cricket, wherein he averages 46.25 with the bat.
Moeen Ali hasn't enjoyed a successful campaign this edition. However, he has picked up nine wickets and bowled at an economy rate of 5.13 against India in this format.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul has scored 32 runs in 46 balls against Moeen Ali in ODI cricket. Although the Indian batter hasn't been free-scoring against the English off-spinner, Moeen is yet to dismiss Rahul in this format.
Jonny Bairstow vs Jasprit Bumrah
England opener Jonny Bairstow will be responsible for providing his team a flying start against unbeaten India in the ICC World Cup 2023 encounter. Bairstow has amassed 127 runs in five matches at a strike-rate of 90.07 so far in this tournament.
Bairstow will go up against India's Jasprit Bumrah early on in the innings. Bumrah, meanwhile, is India's leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 11 dismissals. He has also maintained a commendable economy rate of 3.80, despite bowling in the first powerplay and death overs.
Jasprit Bumrah has dismissed Jonny Bairstow once in 44 balls in ODI cricket. Bairstow, on the other hand, has accumulated only 22 runs at a strike-rate of 50.00 in this head-to-head, 12 of which are in boundaries. Bumrah has bowled 33 dot balls against Bairstow in this format, gaining the upper hand ahead of the clash in Lucknow.
Joe Root vs Ravichandran Ashwin
England's batters, barring the win against Bangladesh, have failed to notch big scores. On spin-friendly conditions in Lucknow, it will be another uphill battle for the Three Lions. Joe Root, one of England's best batters against spin, will be key in this clash. He has averaged 35.00 in this World Cup, slamming two half-centuries - versus New Zealand and Bangladesh. Root has scored 739 runs in 21 ODIs against India, including three centuries.
India are expected to play Ravichandran Ashwin against England on Sunday. The off-spinner has scalped 35 wickets in 23 ODIs against the Three Lions at an average of 28.00, making him a fruitful option for Rohit Sharma and Co. at Lucknow.
Joe Root, however, has a slight upper hand against Ravichandran Ashwin in ODI cricket. Root has scored 97 runs in 134 balls, striking at 72.38, smashing six fours and a six. Ashwin, meanwhile, has dismissed him twice and bowled 69 dot balls. An average of 48.50, although, gives the Englishman an advantage.
Australian opener David Warner on Saturday overtook India's Virat Kohli to become the fourth-highest run-scorer in ICC World Cup history. The 36-year-old achieved a personal landmark during the World Cup match against New Zealand at Dharamshala. In the match, Warner looked in amazing touch, scoring 81 in just 65 balls, with five fours and six sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of 124.61. In 24 World Cup matches, Warner has scored 1,405 runs at an average of 63.86 and a strike rate of almost 102. He has six World Cup tons, most by an Australian and four half-centuries, with the best individual score of 178.
In six matches of this World Cup, Warner has scored 413 runs at an average of 68.33 and a strike rate of over 112. He has two centuries and a fifty, with the best score of 163.
Viral Kohli has scored 1,384 runs in 31 matches at an average of 55.36, with three centuries and nine fifties.
Sachin Tendulkar (2,278 runs in 45 matches at an average of 56.95, with six centuries and 15 fifties), Australia's Ricky Ponting (1,743 runs in 46 matches at an average of 45.86, with five centuries and six fifties) and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (1,532 runs in 37 matches at an average of 56.74, with five centuries and seven fifties) are ahead of Warner.
Coming to the match, a 175-run opening stand between Travis Head (109 in 67 balls, with 10 fours and seven sixes) and Warner and contributions from lower middle-order such as Glenn Maxwell (41 in 24 balls, with five fours and two sixes), Josh Inglis (38 in 28 balls, with four boundaries and a six) and skipper Pat Cummins (37 in 14 balls with two fours and four sixes) powered Aussies to 388 in 49.2 overs.
Glenn Phillips (3/37) and Trent Boult (3/77) were the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand. Mitchell Santner got two wickets while Matt Henry and James Neesham took one each.
Australia have three wins in five games while New Zealand have four wins in five matches.

Australian openers David Warner and Travis Head created a new batting record in their World Cup match against New Zealand at Dharamshala on Saturday. Warner and Head stitched a partnership of 175 runs in just 19.1 overs (115 balls). The opening duo achieved a run rate of 9.13 per over, which is the highest run rate for any 150-run plus opening stand in ODIs. Warner and Head overtook England duo of Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy, who scored 159 in 105 balls, with a run rate of 9.08 against Pakistan in Bristol back in 2019.
This is the second-highest partnership for the first wicket by Australia in an ODI against New Zealand. The highest partnership is by Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh, of 189 runs against Kiwis in 2000.
Travis Head is also the fifth Australian to register a World Cup hundred on his debut in the tournament. Other names to do so are Trevor Chappell, Geoff Marsh, Andrew Symonds and Aaron Finch.

Australia's record-breaking batsman Glenn Maxwell blasted mid-match, nightclub-style light shows at the Cricket World Cup as "the dumbest idea" on Wednesday, claiming they cause "shocking headaches". Maxwell struck the fastest World Cup century in just 40 balls to lead Australia to a tournament record 309-run win over the Netherlands at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley stadium. But a pounding sound and light show in the middle of the Dutch reply did not amuse Maxwell, who covered his eyes with both hands during the near two-minute spectacle.
"Well, I had something like that light show happen at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game," Maxwell said after his man-of-the-match knock of 106 off 44 balls in a team total of 399-8.
"And I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust and I just think it's the dumbest idea for cricketers."

He added: "So I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it's a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, horrible for the players."
Australian bowlers led by leg-spinner Adam Zampa dismissed the Dutch for 90 in 21 overs for the biggest margin of victory in World Cup history.
Maxwell, nicknamed "The Big Show" for his swashbuckling batting, said he had been unwell on the eve of Wednesday's game.
He said he was sick from a sleepless night after being joined by his family ahead of his team's fifth match of the tournament. "Yeah, not great. I was sitting in the changing room and I didn't really want to bat, which is a bit different than the last game where I was way too eager to get out there," Maxwell told reporters.
"But yeah, I was a little bit more chilled when I got out there. Didn't have many high hopes, I think. But I've been pretty cooked the last couple of days. Coincided with the sleepless night last night with the family over."
After sledgehammering Bangladesh with a 174, South African opener Quinton de Kock said that he was a bit nervous coming into the World Cup match on Tuesday. De Kock's hundred and Heinrich Klaasen's blistering 90 was the cornerstone of South Africa's impressive 149-run win over Bangladesh here. "I was a bit nervous this morning, don't normally get nervous at all. I had a bit of fun, great to get two points. But I was a bit more tired than satisfied (after the innings)," said de Kock during the post-match presentation.
The left-handed batter praised Klaasen for producing another hurting knock.
"I need some of the juice he's having. He's been special, for every team he's played for. Taking the tournament by storm," he added.
South African skipper Aiden Markram, who himself made a 60, lauded de Kock and Klaasen for their brilliant innings.
"What Quinny did was superb and then Klaasen walks in and smashes it. Everyone approaches it differently but it gels quite nicely. We keep striving to put in big performances," said Markram.
Pacer Lungi Ngidi sat out of the match with a knee niggle and Markram hoped that he would be fit for the match against Pakistan.
"Hopefully, he can recover well over the next couple of days and be ready for Pakistan," he said.
Markram said South Africa have been trying to become a team that chases well too.
"The more you win batting first the more you lean that way. But once we get one chase under the belt, and the blueprint, then hopefully, we'll be a good team at chasing." Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan said they lost the match in the final 10 overs when De Kock and Klaasen went on a rampage, adding 144 runs.
"Quinton batted really well, and the way Klaasen finished was something we didn't have any answer to. We should've bowled better. We lost the game in the last 10 overs," said Shakib.
However, the veteran all-rounder did not lose hope of his team finishing strongly in this World Cup.
"Lot to be learnt, and lot to play for. We will love to finish 5-6 if not in the semis. We're not playing like a team that can do it, but hope to finish stronger," he added.
Riding on Quinton de Kock's ton, some brutal late hitting from Heinrich Klaasen and bowlers' brilliance South Africa registered a massive 149-run victory over Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 match at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. The Proteas also garnered a massive net run rate boost with another emphatic win. Defiant Mahmudullah was the only batter who stood tall today for Bangladesh but his vigilant knock of 111 runs went in vain as other batters failed to score big.
Gerald Coetzee was the destructor-in-chief as he returned with a 3-wicket haul while Lizaad Williams and Marco Jansen bagged two wickets respectively.
With the win, South Africa have climbed up to the second spot in the points table.
While chasing a whopping total of 383, a promising start to Bangladesh's reply came to an end when Tanzid Hasan (12) gloved behind a short ball from Marco Jansen.
Jansen then strangled Najmul Hossain Shanto along the leg side on the next delivery.
Bangladesh's chase lay in tatters as three wickets fell in the space of an eight-ball blitz during the first powerplay.
The all-rounder fell short of a hat-trick when his attempted yorker was converted into an easily defended full ball, but Lizaad Williams kept the wickets coming by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan (1). The wickets continued to fall as Gerald Coetzee dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim for 8.
Litton Das' valiant battle came to an end when he was caught leg-before by Kagiso Rabada for a 44-ball 22. Keshav Maharaj joined the wicket-taking frenzy when he caught Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the deep for 11, ending Bangladesh's pursuit before it had even begun.
With a superb knock from number six, Mahmudullah restored Bangladesh's pride and helped his team avoid a record defeat. In a pressure run chase, Mahmudullah brought up his 67-ball World Cup fifty with Bangladesh seven wickets down.
Bangladesh veteran Mahmudullah slammed his fourth one-day international hundred; his third in ODI World Cups. With the help of the tail, Mahmudullah reached his own personal milestone with a high-class century against South Africa's weary attack, coming off 104 balls.
Bangladesh did have reason to celebrate at the finish when Mahmudullah hit a century and the fans cheered in encouragement. However, the centurion's exit ignited a string of quick wickets as South Africa won by 149 runs.
Earlier, a 20th ODI hundred from de Kock and some brutal hitting from Klaasen guided South Africa to a huge first-innings total of 382/5. De Kock finished with the second-highest World Cup score by a South African batter, while Klaasen was also at his savage best to give the Proteas a resounding total. A mind-boggling 217 runs were scored in the final 20 overs, with 144 coming in the final 60 deliveries.
Brief score: South Africa 382/5 (Quinton de Kock 174, Heinrich Klaasen 90; Hasan Mahmud 2-67) vs Bangladesh 233 (Mahmudullah 111, Litton Das 22; Gerald Coetzee 3-62).
Former pacer Irfan Pathan compared Mohammed Shami with "Ferrari" after the 33-year-old bagged a five-wicket haul against New Zealand at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday. "Mohammed Shami is like Ferrari. Whenever you take it out of garage it will give you same speed thrill and joy to ride every time," Irfan Pathan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Following his brilliant performance against New Zealand, Shami broke plenty of records. He became the first Indian to bag two five-wicket hauls in the history of the ODI World Cup. Shami's stupendous performance helped the 'Men in Blue' to restrict New Zealand at 273 on Sunday.
Shami also overtook legendary spinner Anil Kumble to become the country's second-highest wicket-taker in the history of the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Mohammed shami is like Ferrari. Whenever you take it out of garage it will give u same speed thrill and joy to ride every time. @MdShami11
— Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) October 22, 2023
In the ODI World Cup, Shami made his debut in the 2015 edition. His current tally in World Cup wickets stands at 36. His best figures in the prestigious tournament are 5/54.
Coming to the match, India put New Zealand to bat first. 'Men in Blue' was off to a good start, reducing Kiwis to 19/2 in powerplay. But a partnership of 159 runs between Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra (75 in 87 balls, with six fours and a six) helped NZ come back in the game.
However, India made a comeback in later stages, bundling out Kiwis for 273 runs in 50 overs.
Shami (5/54) was the pick of the bowlers for India. Kuldeep Yadav (2/73) was also fine with the ball. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took a wicket each.
India won the match by 4 wickets with Virat Kohli scoring a brilliant 95.

David Warner and Mitchell Marsh symbolised Australia's insatiability with the bat and Adam Zampa's relentlessness with the ball as the five-time champions registered a revitalising 62-run win over Pakistan in the World Cup match in Bengaluru on Friday. Brutal hundreds by Warner (163 off 124 balls) and Marsh (121 off 108 balls) led Australia to an imposing 367 for 9. Pakistan batters fought valiantly but could only manage 305 as leg-spinner Zampa (4/53) inflicted blows at vital junctions. Australia need to profusely thank both Warner, who hammered his 21st ODI hundred, and Marsh, his second ton, for keeping their World Cup campaign on track with a blistering assault.
The Aussie openers amassed 259 runs in just 203 balls, and it was only the fourth instance in World Cup history that both openers notched centuries in the same match.
Australia needed a dominant show to spruce up their confidence after three middling efforts that fetched two defeats and a win in this tournament, and they did it with a bang.
The only spanner in their easy rollicking was left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, whose five-wicket haul (5/54) was just a sad reminder as to what other Pakistan bowlers could have done with a bit of thinking.
Warner, who was dropped twice on 10 and 105, and Marsh were at their marauding best against a Pakistan attack that lacked direction on a smooth M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch with a quick outfield adding value to their shots.
They were either too full, too short or strayed on to the leg side, and the Aussie batters did not need any second invitation to exploit the flowing freebies.
All this could have been a tad different for Pakistan had Usama Mir, who replaced Shadab Khan, held on to a simple skier from Warner off Afridi, whose clever variations were a treat to watch, inside the ring.
Warner was on 10 then in Australia's total of 22.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam gave the ball to Haris Rauf in the ninth over, hoping for a breakthrough. But the Aussies slipped into the top gear precisely from that over.
The right-arm pacer was carted for 24 runs in his first over. Warner started the carnage with a four and six and Marsh finished it with three fours in succession.
Thereafter, Australia's run-rate hardly came under seven for the rest of the innings.
Hasan Ali found some early movement away from Marsh, but Warner took him head on with a series of pulls and flicks, including a monster six that thudded on to the roof.
Pakistan pressed their spinners Mir and left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawas into service but they made zero impact.
They were quite unimaginative, and just kept feeding both Warner and Marsh, who preferred the ground route early on in his innings, with short balls which were effortlessly put away.
Australia notched up their 100 in the 13th over, 200th in the 30th over and 300 in the 41st over as their run machine marched forward inexorably.
Warner brought up his hundred, fourth consecutive against Pakistan in ODIs, with a single off Mir, and the signature jump-and-punch celebration followed to the joy of a near full house of crowd, that encouraged both the sides.
Birthday boy Marsh followed his senior partner soon in reaching the three-figure mark with a boundary off Mir, and he celebrated the landmark with a mighty roar.
Marsh departed soon when his flick off Afridi was snaffled by Mir at short fine leg, a rare occasion for a Pakistan fielder to hold on to a catch on a day when they dropped three catches along with numerous other fumbles on the field.
He walked back only after helping Warner to realise the second-best opening stand in World Cups after 282 between Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga in 2011.
Post Marsh's dismissal, Pakistan did manage to pluck some quick wickets -- in fact 8 of them for 108 runs to restrict Australia under 400 which once seemed a genuine possibility.
Even then, 369 was a steep mountain. But there was this underlying fearlessness and efficiency with which Pakistan approached their chase.
Openers Imam-ul-Haq, who at times reminds of his legendary uncle Inzamam-ul-Haq with his neat timing and crisp shots, made his first fifty (70 off 71 balls) of this tournament, while Abdullah Shafique (64 off 61 balls) continued his fine touch after coming in for injured Fakhar Zaman.
Together, they milked 134 effortless runs in 127 balls. Of course, they were helped by a drop each as well.
Imam was dropped on 48 by Pat Cummins off Glenn Maxwell, while Shafique was given a life by substitute Sean Abbot off Cummins on 27.
However, Marcus Stoinis, who was not afraid to dig the ball into the pitch to get some bounce, got rid of both Imam and Shafique in rather quick succession and leg-spinner Zampa snaffled the prized wicket of Babar as Pakistan seemed to have hit the slide button.
But, Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel added 56 runs off 48 balls to keep Pakistan steady as Aussies tried to apply constant pressure in the middle overs.
Their effort eventually paid off as Zampa got the wickets of both Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed with skidders that both the batters failed to read, ending up as leg-before victims.
Those dismissals also ended any hopes Pakistan entertained to enact a miracle.

Dropping as many as five catches at crucial junctures and failing to read the nature of the track became their undoing, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said after his team's humiliating 149-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in a World Cup game on Wednesday. Batting first, New Zealand scored 288/6 in 50 overs and Glenn Phillips (71) and Tom Latham (68) got reprieves at opportune moments to conjure a match-winning 144-run stand. In reply, Afghanistan were bowled out for 139 in 34.4 overs.
"Very disappointed because at this level you have to take those kind of catches. End of the day those catches hurt us as otherwise the team was doing well but the fielding let us a little bit down," Shahidi was straight-forward in his assessment.
Afghanistan conceded 78 runs in the last six overs and it was the turning point on a track that offered a lot of turn.
"Last six overs, a lot of runs were scored by New Zealand. Before that, we dropped two catches before the 40th over and the set batters (Latham and Phillips) were there. That's why we couldn't stop them as everything went their way," Shahidi said.
If five catches hurt them badly, opting to field after winning the toss was also a huge factor.
"The toss I can say...We couldn't judge the pitch properly. I think in the first innings, the ball was spinning (turning) and was a bit slow. We bowled well but our fielding wasn't good." Not being able to keep up the momentum after a win against England would have an impact, Shahidi agreed.
"Tonight's game will hurt us but we still have more games to come. Next match is against Pakistan. We will go back and discuss where we can improve and will try to come back stronger." New Zealand skipper Latham said that his team is on the right track.
"I guess on the back of some good performances, we are stepping in the right way. We have a week or so (4 days) and then we will play India (October 22) and then Australia (October 28), we are hoping to continue the momentum," stand-in skipper Latham said.
Latham was happy that he and Phillips could take the game deep with their 144-run stand.
"We were put under pressure at certain times but putting pressure back on them at the end of the innings was great. I think at that time we lost three wickets in a short span of time, we tried to get a partnership there...took it nice and deep," he said.
The dropped catches did help, Latham admitted.
"There were a few chances here and there I guess. We tried to capitalise on those chances. Glenn played a fantastic innings, took pressure off me. The guys set the tone at the top in the first 10 overs and kept chipping in." Man of the match Phillips praised Mark Chapman and Mitchell Santner, who gave the final push making 34 runs in the final 2.5 overs.
"It was great how we were able to take it till the end and I think we understood what we could possibly get in the last 10 overs. It was amazing how Chapman and Santner finished it. I thought 250 was par.
"We are in an environment where we keep working for each other and play as a team. Latham was really good towards the end," Phillips said.
India's unbeaten run in the ongoing World Cup has been a result of their all-round performances with the bat and the ball as well as one of the less talked about aspects in cricket, fielding. Stalwart batter Virat Kohli who is well known for his refined batting skills, has been a crucial figure in the field as he tops the chart of players with the biggest impact on the field after the conclusion of the first three games for each country.
Kohli has completed a total of three catches in India's three World Cup 2023 matches. He is two shy of tournament leaders for non-wicket-keepers Matt Henry of New Zealand and Australia's experienced opener David Warner. However, his impact on the field stretched much further than that.
Kohli is in a league of his own on the list of runs saved and pressure ratings after the conclusion of three matches for all teams at the event and his total of 22.30 points allows him to sit comfortably at the top spot for fielding impact at the World Cup.
Kohli's closest competitors are a pair of star batters, with former England skipper Joe Root (four catches) and David Warner (five catches) at the second and third spots respectively.
Ishan Kishan is the second Indian player who features in the Top-10 list with a tally of 13 points. For Pakistan, Shadab Khan features in the Top-10 list in the fifth spot with 15.13 points.
Overall, India's performance in the field has been the one to watch out for. Indian fielders have claimed 14 catches in the tournament and saved a total of 10 runs.
Till now, the Indian team has dropped two catches on the field, with defending champions England (1) the only side to have dropped less number of catches.
India will return to the on-field action against Bangladesh on Thursday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Mumbai.
South Africa's march in the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 came to a rude halt as they slumped to a loss against Netherlands. Coming into the Cricket World Cup match, hardly anybody would have expected the result but the Netherlands team kept the believe in themselves to cause a major upset against the world No. 3 ODI team South Africa. Netherlands, in a rain-curtailed match with the number of overs reduced to 43 per side, notched a good total of 245/8. In reply, South Africa could never stitch a great stand and managed just 207 in 42.5 overs.
Before the match, South Africa were placed third with a net run-rate of +2.360. After the loss, though their position did not change, their net run-rate got reduced to +1.385. Netherlands, so far the last team in the 10-team table, is currently ninth. India continue to lead the table.
Scott Edwards played a captain's knock to lead the Netherlands' remarkable recovery and take them to 245 for eight in a rain-hit game against South Africa in the World Cup on Tuesday.
Intermittent rain added an extra chill in the mountain air and reduced the game to 43-over a side contest.
South Africa expectedly opted to bowl amid the overcast sky and their bunch of formidable pacers including Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi, got a lot out of the surface.
However, their death overs bowling left a lot to be desired as the Netherlands plundered 68 runs in the last five overs. The Netherlands were struggling at 140 for seven in the 34th over.
Edwards (78 off 69) shared an entertaining 64-run partnership off 37 balls with Roelof van der Merwe (29 off 19) towards the end of the innings to take the team past 200.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi on Tuesday said the upset win over defending champions England will give his side a lot of confidence in their World Cup match against New Zealand in Chennai on Wednesday. Afghanistan stunned England by 69 runs in Delhi on Sunday to record their second win in World Cup history. The Kiwis, who are unbeaten in the tournament so far, will pose a tough challenge for the Afghans, but Shahidi asserted that his side would be up to the task once again.
"Definitely it was a big win for us. England are defending champion. So, that will give a lot of confidence for our team," he said during the pre-match press conference.
"And we had belief from the beginning of the tournament, but the first two games didn't go our way." As far as Afghanistan's preparations are concerned, they have had enough camps and outings in India.
Afghanistan roped in former Indian batter Ajay Jadeja as a mentor for this tournament, and Shahidi said that having Indians with his side has really helped their batting to flourish.
"We had a coach in the past also from India, and right now Jadeja. If you look at India, their (Indians) batting is very good. So, those talks about batting and the team, it helps us whenever an Indian coach is with us," he said.
Shahidi said he did not agree with the perception that cricket facilities in Afghanistan are not adequate.
"We have good enough facilities to prepare ourselves. We have good domestic cricket also. If we want to prepare or arrange camps in our country, it's possible.
"In every city, in Jalalabad, Kabul, Kandahar, we have facilities, we have stadiums, we have academies. It's not like India, but still, you can prepare yourself on it." The Chepauk ground here is not an unknown territory for the Afghans, having had numerous training session and preparations at this venue, and Shahidi feels that the experience would come in handy against the New Zealanders.
"India was our home for two or three years. So, we are used to it. On this ground, we had a preparation camp for the 2019 World Cup. We spent 40 days here.
"So, all these things give us a lot of advantage, especially in these conditions like India, because with that, the condition is same to Afghanistan also."
Strong winds caused several hoardings to fall from the roof of the Ekana Stadium on to the seats below during the World Cup match between Australia and Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday. After rain stopped play for a bit, there was a dust storm and heavy winds led to several iron angles with branding material from the roof falling on people sitting at the lower levels.
The situation could have turned worse, but luckily, the stands were relatively empty. It did, however, cause panic among those who were watching the game as the public announcement asked spectators to move to safety of the upper decks.
Asked about the incident after the match, Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa, one of the star performers of the game with figures of 4/47, said, "Never been a part of that, never seen something like that. But there was no one hurt hopefully. There was a metal pole coming down I've never seen anything like that."
By the time the second innings began the security had moved all spectators to the upper levels.
Due to strong winds, hoardings are falling all over Lucknow's Ekana Stadium.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa on Monday revealed that he has been suffering from back spasm for the last couple of days, but that could not come in his way of producing a match-winning effort against Sri Lanka in the World Cup here.
The 31-year-old Zampa was adjudged the Player of the Match after returning impressive figures of 8-1-47-4 as Australia posted their first win of the ongoing tournament.
"To be honest, I wasn't feeling great because I had a bit of a back spasm. Was playing through it the last couple of days. Today I felt better, bowled better today," Zampa said after the match.
"Personally, not at my best and last game particularly felt I could have been doing better. My job in this team is to take wickets in the middle order. Didn't quite do that last game and put the pressure on the death bowlers.
"Today, I've been feeling better, but nice to come out on the winning side today. Took a while to get into the game, just got to keep that wicket taking attitude going, doesn't matter if I leak some runs." Australia had lost to India and South Africa in their first two matches and skipper Pat Cummins was a happy man as his side ticked all the boxes against Sri Lanka.
"Yeah, happy today. It was probably that nothing was said and it was just on the back of two losses...The energy in the field was nice to start with and everything else flowed.
Pakistan players chose to confine themselves to their hotel rooms upon their arrival in Bengaluru from Ahmedabad on Sunday, but the relatively low-key touchdown did not prevent them from celebrating the birthday of captain Babar Azam. The players cut a cake at the team hotel as Babar turned 29 on Sunday. "It was a small function attended by the players and support staff. There were not many activities today as it was a travel day, and the team will soon start preparations for the upcoming matches," said an official travelling with the team.
Pakistan will face Australia on October 20 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, and they will be eager to give a better account of themselves after the seven-wicket mauling at the hands of India on Saturday.
This is also Pakistan's first visit to Bengaluru since 2012. They had then beaten India by five wickets in the first T20I match of the two-match series.
Pakistan have also played just two ODIs in the Garden City - in the quarterfinals of the 1996 World Cup and in the final of the Pepsi Cup in 1999.
While the Green Brigade had lost the World Cup match, they had beaten India by 123 runs in the Pepsi Cup.
"Bengaluru is a welcoming city and we are happy to be here. The climate too seems a lot cooler here. Hopefully, there will not be rain as we have seen some reports of heavy rains in some parts of South India," the official said.
Ticket sale to start
The Karnataka State Cricket Association on Sunday said it will start the ticket sale from Tuesday for the upcoming World Cup matches at the venue.
Tickets will be sold over the counters at Cubbon Road and Queens Road from Tuesday to Thursday.
The lowest ticket rate (H-Lower Stand) for the match between Australia and Pakistan is Rs 1000 while the high end P-Terrace price is fixed at Rs 25000.
The same rate is applicable to the tickets for the match between Pakistan and New Zealand on November 4 also.

Star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan on Sunday hoped their stunning 69-run win over England in the World Cup will put a smile on the faces of his countrymen and heal their pain following a series of devastating earthquakes. Afghanistan on Sunday created one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, shocking defending champions England. "This is a big win for us. This kind of performance gives us the belief that we can beat any side on any day. It will give us the energy for the rest of the World Cup," Rashid Khan told the broadcasters after Afghanistan bowled England out for 215 after posting 284 all out.
"Cricket is something that brings joy to the people back home. Winning the game against England is big for us. Recently, we had an earthquake back home. Over 3,000 people lost their lives, many houses were destroyed, so this win will put a little bit of smile on their faces and maybe, they can little bit forget those days."
Afghanistan have been affected by strong earthquakes and aftershocks, which killed thousands of people and flattened many villages. In fact, on Sunday, a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was adjudged the Player of the Match for his all-round show, also dedicated his award to his countrymen back home.
Rashid, who snapped three for 37, said they had set up small goals and just wanted to give their heart and soul in their performance without thinking about the result.
"I made it clear to everyone in the dressing room. Whatever happens in the tournament, we just have to fight till the end. We made small goals for ourselves. You just have to be happy that you gave your 100% while going back to the hotel."
Talking about Mujeeb, Rashid said, "Mujeeb has been contributing consistently for us. We have been bowling together in the nets. We have been batting together in the nets.
"We discuss what's the best ball to bowl on the wicket. Sharing information helps us. I'm lucky to have him around. Also, we have Nabi and great to have him who has plenty of experience.
"It's a special occasion for Nabi. 150th game for him. Also, 100th game for Rahmat Shah. We said that we would celebrate after the win. This will be a memorable win for him.
"We lost to England in the 2016 T20 World Cup here. We had a discussion about it. We restricted them to 140 but had a collapse. We learnt from the mistakes and really happy to win tonight," he added.
Mujeeb had started the proceedings in their defence of 284 as he shared the new ball with Fazalhaq Farooqi.
"As a spinner, it is pretty hard to bowl in the powerplay. But I have been working in the nets. There is not much room for error to bowl wide so I have tried to bowl wicket-to-wicket," he said.
"We knew that dew will play some part and that is why I wanted to bowl in the powerplay. The ball was holding a little bit as well. Even if there was dew, I was mentally prepared. Not to give much room and bowl in the right areas."
Asked about his batting, Mujeeb, who slammed three fours and a six during his cameo, said, "It is all about the management. They have been giving me confidence. I want to contribute as a lower-order batter as well, and those 25-30 runs help the team as well. I want to continue doing that."
England skipper Jos Buttler said it will take a lot of effort from his team to overcome the setback.
"Disappointed with the result. The team will need to show a lot of resilience to get over this and make a successful comeback," said Buttler.
"Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today." He conceded that the defending champions erred in executing their strategy.
"It came down to execution, we weren't quite at the level we'd like to be with both bat and ball. You got to let these defeats hurt, there's no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect.
"There's a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger," added Buttler.

Kane Williamson marked his return to the World Cup with an undefeated 78 as New Zealand cruised past Bangladesh by eight wickets on Friday but the captain was forced to retire hurt with a thumb injury. Williamson had been sidelined with a serious knee injury picked up during the IPL and sat out New Zealand's first two wins at the World Cup. Chasing 246 to win, the 33-year-old, playing his first ODI since January, had reached his 43rd fifty in the format off 81 balls and was looking well set for a century.
He moved on to 78 with eight fours and a six when he had to call it quits after a throw from the deep rapped him painfully on the glove, jamming his thumb against the bat handle.
In discussion with the medical team, and with the Black Caps only 46 runs short of victory, it was decided to take Williamson out of the game.
"Not sure just yet," said Williamson when asked about the gravity of the injury.
"It got a bit fat and colourful straight away which made holding the bat difficult. I'll have a scan tomorrow and hopefully it's okay."
New Zealand comfortably wrapped up their third win with 43 balls to spare.
Williamson had put on a second-wicket stand of 80 with opener Devon Conway (45) and then 108 with Daryl Mitchell who raced to his 50 off 43 balls.
Mitchell did it in some style with a giant heave for six off Bangladesh seamer Shoriful Islam.
Mitchell finished undefeated on 89 off just 67 deliveries, with six fours and four sixes under his belt.
New Zealand, runners-up at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, had already defeated defending champions England as well as outsiders Netherlands in India.
Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan and then lost to England.
Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim hit a fine half century to lead Bangladesh to 245-9 while veteran Black Caps fast bowler Trent Boult claimed a 200th one-day international wicket.
Mushfiqur made 66 off 75 balls with six fours and two sixes, taking his number of fifties in the format to 48 having also hit a half-century against England three days ago.
The 36-year-old, playing in his 259th ODI, shared a crucial 96-run fourth wicket partnership with skipper Shakib Al Hasan (40) to help their team recover from 56-4.
Boult's 200th wicket
Mushfiqur was eventually clean-bowled by Matt Henry as he attempted to pick up the scoring rate after Shakib had perished, caught by wicketkeeper Tom Latham off Lockie Ferguson after top-edging an attempted pull shot.
Shakib ended his innings suffering from cramps in the sweltering heat and batting without a helmet or cap against the spinners.
After the game, teammate Najmul Hossain Shanto said Shakib "has gone for a scan" without specifying the injury concern.
"We'll then know what's happened to him," said Najmul.
Mushfiqur's brother-in-law Mahmudullah, batting at number eight, added a valuable undefeated 41.
Boult, meanwhile, became the sixth New Zealand player to take 200 ODI wickets.
The 34-year-old reached the personal landmark when he dismissed Towhid Hridoy, caught at extra cover by Mitchell Santner for 13, in the 38th over.
Playing in his 107th ODI, Boult also dismissed opener Liton Das off the first ball of the match.
Liton was celebrating his 29th birthday but any hopes of a big score to mark the occasion were shattered when he shuffled down the wicket to confront Boult only to sky the ball to a grateful Henry who pocketed the chance at fine leg.

India's stalwart batter Virat Kohli has surpassed cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar to become the player with the most number of runs across both 50-over and T20I World Cups. Virat showed his elegance and remained unbeaten with a score of 55* against Afghanistan in the ongoing World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Wednesday. During his decorated career, Sachin played 45 fifty-over World Cup games and scored 2,278 runs at an average of 56.95 with six centuries and 15 fifties. But he did not feature in T20I World Cups played.
On the other hand, Virat has played 28 fifty-over WC matches, scored 1,170 runs at an average of 50.86, with two centuries and eight fifties in 28 innings. He is also the 7th highest scorer in the tournament's history and second highest run scorer for India in fifty-over WC.
Overall, Virat has 2,311 runs in 55 matches and 53 innings across T20 and 50 over World Cups. He has scored two centuries and 22 fifties across both tournaments.
Along with Virat, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's bat unleashed a downpour of runs and a deluge of records followed, much like the raindrops during India's clash with Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
He showcased his batting prowess and tapped into his prime form, not only amassing a century but also etching his name in history as the player with the most centuries in the annals of the World Cup, amassing a total of 7 tons. This remarkable achievement surpassed the iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who had notched up six World Cup centuries during his illustrious career.
Coming to the match, Afghanistan's star-studded spin squadron failed to test the Indian batters as Rohit smashed them for boundaries all over the field.
While chasing a target of 273, India got off to a flying start with the opening duo of Rohit and Ishan Kishan taking the fight to the Afghanistan bowlers.
India seemed to have adopted a T20I approach after adopting a careful approach for the initial overs. After the Indian captain struck a boundary in Fazalhaq Farooqi's over, there was no looking back.
Rashid took the wickets of both openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit, but it wasn't enough as India went on to claim an 8-wicket victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The face-off between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq was one of the biggest talking points going into the Cricket World Cup 2023 match between India and Afghanistan on Wednesday but the two cricketers ended the animosity with a hug during India's innings. Kohli and Naveen were involved in an on-field spat during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 but they seemed cordial during the Cricket World Cup match and the Indian cricket team star even asked the crowd in New Delhi to stop taunting the Afghanistan fast bowler.
Gautam Gambhir, who was also part of the spat during the IPL game, was on commentary during the incident and he weighed in on the hug and slammed the crowd for the taunts.
“You fight on the field, not off the field. Every player has the right to fight for his team, fight for respect, and fight to win. It doesn't matter which country you belong to or how good of a player you are. The good thing was when we saw Virat Kohli and Naveen Ul Haq in between the overs, we can see that the fight has ended,” Gambhir said on commentary during the match.

— ਅੰਕਿਤ∆ (@CaughtAtGully) October 11, 2023
“I would also want to tell the crowd and fans that any player in the ground or on social media, shouldn't be trolled or made fun of. You are passionate when you represent your team. It was a huge thing for Naveen to play in IPL for the first time coming from Afghanistan,” the former India opener added.
Rohit Sharma on Wednesday surpassed compatriot Sachin Tendulkar with a record seventh World Cup century to lead India to a crushing eight-wicket win over Afghanistan.
Chasing 273 for victory in New Delhi, the hosts rode on Rohit's 131 to achieve their target in 35 overs for a second straight win in the 50-over showpiece event.
He brought the nearly packed house to its feet with his century off 63 balls to go past Tendulkar's record of six tons in World Cups.
Rohit's century was also the fastest by an Indian in a World Cup, quicker than Kapil Dev's hundred in 72 balls against Zimbabwe in 1983.
Rohit hit the ball to all parts of the ground as he reached 1,000 World Cup runs and then went past Chris Gayle's record of 553 sixes across all formats.
The dashing opener hit 16 fours and five sixes in his 84-ball knock before being bowled by leg-spinner Rashid Khan.
His opening partnership of 156 with the left-handed Ishan Kishan, who made 47, extended the team's dominance after a good bowling show on a batting-friendly pitch.
Virat Kohli soon took over to hit an unbeaten 55 and finished the match with a boundary.
Afghanistan posted 272-8 after electing to bat at the ground which witnessed a World Cup record 754 runs scored in the previous match when South Africa posted 428 and defeated Sri Lanka. Jasprit Bumrah stood out for the home side with his best World Cup bowling figures of 4-39.

The Pakistan vs Sri Lanka match in the Cricket World Cup 2023 turned out to be a high-scoring thriller, with the two teams putting nearly 700 runs on the board cumulatively. In different phases of the match, both seemed to have had some sort of edge, but it was Mohammad Rizwan's unbeaten knock of 131 runs that proved to be the difference maker. The wicket-keeper batter, however, was only one of the four players in the match who went on to register triple-digit scores.
Batting first, Sri Lanka put a total of 344 runs on the board, thanks to centuries from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama. For Pakistan, the likes of Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan scored centuries, as the latter remained unebaten till the end despite apparent injury issues.
As Pakistan chased down the target, record books were rewritten. Here are some of the milestones that were reached in the match:
Highest scores for Pakistan wicketkeepers in ODIs: Mohammad Rizwan's unbeaten 131 is the highest score for a Pakistani wicketkeeper in ODIs. Some of the other top scorers are:
124 - Kamran Akmal vs WI, Brisbane, 2005
