South African cricketing legend Jacques Kallis remarked that the Proteas players should stick to their roles during the ICC Cricket World Cup in India and continue the manner in which they have been playing, pointing that past unsuccessful campaigns were because the players "wanted it too much" and "went outside their roles" because of it. South African legends Kallis and Faf du Plessis have shared their thoughts on how the Proteas could fare at the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.
South Africa heads into the marquee tournament in India with a nice blend of youth and experience to pick from. They have never ever won a major ICC World Championship despite featuring some of cricket's most exciting and talented stars in their squad over the years.
When the selectors gather to pick their squad for the World Cup, they will have exciting young talents in Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee to pick from alongside seasoned campaigners like Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma and David Miller.
As good as the squad will be, the legendary all-rounder Kallis, speaking exclusively to the ICC, said the key for South Africa would be to stay true to their brand of cricket.
"The one thing that needs to change for South Africa to be successful in a Cricket World Cup is to carry on playing the cricket that we've played going into the World Cup," he said as quoted by ICC.
"We have a history of playing good cricket leading into the World Cup. For some reason, things change. Maybe we want it too much. I think players wanted too much and you have gone outside of the area you need to be doing. Maybe going outside of their roles because they wanted too much," he added.
Kallis had a valuable piece of advice for the current crop of players: "Stick to your roles. Trust the partner next to you. And just play the cricket you have been playing."
Kallis believes South Africa's traditional strength - their pace attack - will once again be key for their hopes.
"South Africa's strength to me is going to be in our bowling attack. We have got some quality pace bowlers that can blow away the opposition's top-order. And I think they are going to play a major role if South Africa are going to get far, if we do get far (in the tournament)," he said.
Kallis' optimism was matched by former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis.
"South Africa's white-ball team is in a strong place. They have got some real experience going into that World Cup," he added.
Du Plessis, however, did warn that adapting to the conditions in the sub-continent would be the biggest challenge for Temba Bavuma's men.
"The challenge for all teams that are not from the subcontinent is obviously always the challenge of going to the subcontinent," he said.
"Especially 50-over cricket. I find with T20 cricket, the surfaces are a bit more even. And you get some really good pitches. With 50-over cricket, you can get that wear and tear and the spinners really come into their own."
Du Plessis however added that the home team, India, and serial winners Australia would be the teams to beat.
"I think South Africa has got a really good side. It will be hard to get past a team like India in home conditions. The other team you can never write off is Australia, with them being so successful in ICC events," he concluded.

Pakistan have named their playing XI for the opening game of the Asia Cup against Nepal in Multan on Wednesday. With Nepal as their opponent in the opening game of the 2023 Asia Cup, Pakistan has prioritised batting depth. Pakistan has many bowling options with three frontline quicks and three all-rounders who can bowl spin. The team made a few adjustments from the starting lineup against Afghanistan in the final ODI in Colombo. While Saud Shakeel moves to the middle order, Iftikhar Ahmed takes his place. Pakistan chose to go with Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, leaving no opportunity for pacer Mohammad Wasim.
Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz will be aided by Salman Agha in the spin department.
The batting line-up has a familiar look with Iftikhar coming back into the middle-order after missing the final ODI against Afghanistan.
Pakistan XI: Babar Azam (c), Fakhar Zaman, Imam ul Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Agha, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf.
The Asia Cup 2023 is just around the corner and the Indian cricket team is toiling hard in the practice camp in Alur, Karnataka. In the past few days, batters were divided into pairs as part of a match simulation. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were followed by the pair of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. In a video going viral on social media, Kohli was batting this time with Ravindra Jadeja as both the players faced spin bowling. It was most probably a part of match situation simulations and both players were looking to play sensible shots.
There were several questions over KL Rahul's fitness following his Asia Cup 2023 selection as chief selector Ajit Agarkar told the media that he was suffering from a slight niggle.

The call-up for the continental tournament was a big deal for the batter after a prolonged battle with injury but the update along with the inclusion of Sanju Samson as a back-up did not alleviate the fears. However, there was some good news for cricket fans as Rahul did wicket-keeping practice where he was helped by skipper Rohit Sharma at the ongoing practice camp in Alur, Karnataka.
Earlier, he also did some batting practice as he was paired with Suryakumar Yadav at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots respectively in a match simulation. India went for fixed pairings in the practice with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill followed by Virat Kohli and the returning Shreyas Iyer at No. 4.
India take on Pakistan in their first match of Asia up 2023 on September 2.
Former Indian captain and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said that he has no favourites for winning the India versus Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 match because both teams are really good. The Asia Cup to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka will kickstart from August 30 onwards, with the match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan on September 2 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy set to serve as the Men in Blue's campaign opener. Ganguly also said that the fitness of Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who made his return from injury and led India to a 2-0 series win against Ireland, will get better with time and India did the right thing by picking Axar Patel in the squad for the continental tournament, as he can also bat well.
"Both India and Pakistan are good cricket teams. The team that plays well will win. I have no favourites....With time his (Jasprit Bumrah) fitness will get better....You can only have three spinners and I think they have done the right thing by picking Axar (Patel), he can bat," said Ganguly while talking to reporters in Kolkata on Thursday.
The squad also marks the return of Jasprit Bumrah to ODI cricket after a gap of more than one year. After proving his fitness in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland, Bumrah is set to test himself in the 50-over format heading into the World Cup. India's pace attack will be boosted by the return of Mohammed Siraj, who was not in the team for some time due to a sore ankle.
Tilak Varma made it to India's Asia Cup squad on the back of his strong performance against West Indies during the tour that ended this month.
Bowling all-rounders Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are also in the squad to give the captain more diversity in choices. Apart from Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja is also in the team as an all-rounder.
Pakistan, India and Nepal are in Group A while Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The tournament will follow a hybrid model with Pakistan hosting four matches across two venues and Sri Lanka hosting the remaining games.
The six group-stage matches will be followed by the Super Fours, beginning September 6.
The final will be played by the top two teams at the end of the Super Fours on September 17 in Colombo.
Squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.
Middle-order has been a problem for the Indian team for a long time. After MS Dhoni's retirement, a number of players have been tried in the finisher's role but not many have been able to convince the selectors and team managment. As for the No. 4 spot, since Yuvraj Singh's exit from the team, there remains a big conundrum over the position. For Ravichandran Ashwin, the man who has been able impress in the middle-order since Dhoni and Yuvraj's departures, is KL Rahul.
"Ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired, India were desperately looking for a replacement. Rahul has filled that slot with expertise. He is a definite lock at No.5 and is also our wicketkeeper-batsman," Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
"Before Pant's injury, Rahul was second in line and now Ishan Kishan is the second keeper, he has grabbed that opportunity with both hands. Rahul has some niggle but hopefully, he will be ready for the first game. If he is not we have an 18-member travelling with squad in Sanju Samson," Ashwin added.
Ashwin also lavished huge praise on Shreyas Iyer, who according to him, remains India's best bet at the No. 4 position despite Tilak Varma's inclusion in the Asia Cup squad.
"Shreyas Iyer is as important as KL Rahul to this side. One of the best players in the Indian line-up against spin and a consistent No.4 for India. He has played a crucial part in their success whenever he has played at 4. If he is completely fit to play, there should be no debate on No. 4 position," Ashwin asserted.
The Indian team management would hope both Rahul and Iyer remain fully fit, especially keeping their importance for the ODI World Cup in mind.
Indian pacer Umesh Yadav has signed with Division One English County side Essex for the remainder of the 2023 championship. With three matches remaining, he has replaced injured New Zealand pacer Doug Bracewell and became the team's second active foreign player for the season after Simon Harmer of South Africa. It would be Umesh's second County stint, with his first coming last season with Middlesex in Division Two, where he grabbed four wickets at an average of 71.50.
However, his term was cut short after three matches as he suffered a quadriceps injury during a One-Day Cup game versus Gloucestershire.
Umesh will be in contention to make it to the playing XI in Essex's remaining contests against Middlesex (home), Hampshire (home) and Northamptonshire (away).
"I am really pleased to join Essex and make what I hope will be some valuable contributions to the team's success this year," he said in a media release issued by the club.
"I enjoyed playing in England with Middlesex last season, and it will be good to return and test myself in those conditions again, especially in the midst of a title race." Umesh has represented India in 57 Tests, 75 ODIs and nine T20Is, scalping 288 international wickets.
His last outing for India with the red ball came a couple of months back during the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at The Oval, where he grabbed two wickets for 131 in a losing cause.
Speaking about having Umesh in the side, Essex head coach Anthony McGrath stated, "Umesh is a superb signing for us, and we all know what he will be able to bring to our attack at a crucial time of the season."
"He is vastly experienced and has taken wickets at the top levels of the game for more than a decade now, so as well as contributing during our run-in, we hope he can pass on some of his wisdom to our young players too." Second-placed Essex's next County fixture is against Middlesex on September 4.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has shared his views on Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion from the World Cup squad. The veteran leg-spinner failed to make the cut for the tournament as the Indian team management gave preference to Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. The 33-year-old has been in and out of the side over the last two years or so. He was part of the T20 World Cup squad last year but did not play a single game Down Under as India crashed out of the tournament in the semi-final.
Harbhajan feels Chahal is India's best spinner in white-ball cricket, adding that a few bad games don't make him a bad bowler.
"The one thing I feel is lacking in the team is the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball formats. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler," Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.
Harbhajan hoped Chahal would return to the team for the World Cup, especially with the tournament set to be held in India.
"I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.
Chahal had a bad outing in the T20I series against West Indies as he picked just five wickets in as many matches, and leaked runs in the last three encounters.
Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody said that flexibility is important in modern-day cricket and Team India may be required to throw someone like the all-rounder Hardik Pandya up the order. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced a strong 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup which will begin on August 30 with Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul returning to the squad and Tilak Verma also getting a place in the team. Speaking exclusively to ESPNCricinfo, Moody spoke on Rohit Sharma's statement concerning flexibility in the line-up.
"Well, I think in this day and age, whether it be 50-over cricket or 20-over cricket, you need to have an open mind. You need to be flexible, and we talk a lot about match-ups. At times, we talk too much about match-ups in the media, so I think that is where I think Rohit Sharma is coming from. You know, there may be a case where you might have a left-hander that is due to come out at number 6, then suddenly the opposition brings out a left-arm spinner or a leg spinner. So, therefore, that number 6 is going to be the next person to come into bat," he said.
"Now, the thing that is really important from a team's point of view, you have that flexibility and open mind, and I think that is what he was trying to articulate to the media there. Yes, there will be flexibility, but there are a couple of places that may not be moving because really the foundation of your innings needs to be concrete, you need stability there and role clarity there. But, you know, Hardik Pandya is an impact player. There may be a time you need to throw him up the order just to get the innings moving quicker than what it has been moving. So, all those tactical nuances, you need to have an open mind too," he added.
Also, speaking exclusively to Star Sports, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also spoke about the flexibility of the Indian line-up.
"I will make a quick point though; let us not confuse flexibility, the kind of flexibility that I expect. For example, where I mentioned Virat Kohli as a number 4 to solve the problem with Ishan Kishan batting down the order, that is the kind of flexibility that I am talking about in the starting template. Now, what happens during the course of the match down the order at number 4, 5, 6; you have two spinners operating, turning a bit, then those kinds of moves are commonplace and something that you expect. Somebody like Hardik Pandya coming in and there is an off-spinner, or Jadeja coming up before left-arm spinner's bowling, now those are okay.
"I think with the starting template or with the plan at the start of the game switching an important position. The whole debate really is about how your 4, 5, 6 are going to look. KL Rahul, I worry about the selection with this niggle; Shreyas Iyer more optimistic and both Ravi (Shastri) and myself when we talked about Virat Kohli at number 4, that's the kind of flexibility I am talking about, not while the match is happening and just for a short time where somebody can tackle a particular bowler."
The 2023 Asia Cup will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the tournament running from August 30 to September 17.
Asia Cup will serve as an important benchmark for India's preparations for the World Cup starting in October and will also help selectors make choices for the marquee event.
India will open their Asia Cup campaign with an iconic clash against Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been appointed Rohit Sharma's deputy in Asia Cup 2023.

Ahead of the third and final T20I match against Ireland, India's head coach Sitanshu Kotak said on Tuesday that Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna are smart players and it never looked like they have got less game time. India is set to play their third and final T20I match against Ireland on Tuesday in Dublin. India has already sealed the three-match series by 2-0 and will look for a whitewash. Bumrah made his comeback in this series after almost a year-long break due to his back injury. While Prasidh recently recovered from a lumbar stress fracture.
In the pre-match press conference, Kotak said, "Bumrah and Prasidh are very smart, it never looked like they did not get the game or time to practice. So I do not think there is any pressure. These guys just need more and more game time and match practice. In this series, they will get two-three matches and in Asia Cup also they will get a few matches.”
When asked about his discussion with Tilak Varma, the Indian coach said that as Tilak was dismissed early in both the previous matches, he wanted to practice in nets and they discussed his shot selection and innings building.
“In the first match, he (Tilak Varma) got out in the first ball down the leg and in the last also he got dismissed, so, he just wanted to practice. In had a normal discussion about his shot selection. He was more talking about how to build his innings and go about the game,” Kotak added.
“Jitesh for the last 2-3 years, is playing a good role of finisher. So, we discussed with him how he will approach the innings if his batting comes early in the match," he added.
As India have already sealed the series, Kotak was asked if team India will give opportunities to the new players, he said, "This is a small series of three matches, so if we have to give the opportunity to someone then we also have to keep some players sit outside. It would be difficult to give a chance to a player in one match and then rest him for the next. In the evening, we will discuss it and then we will take the decision.”
The Indian head coach said on the support India's young batter Rinku Singh got from the crowd in the second T20I match.
“Crowd is looking for new players who are doing well, last time, the crowd was cheering for Sanju (Samson). Whoever performs well, the crowd take them up. Obviously, it was Rinku's first match and he has done well in IPL, so the crowd must be looking for him, it is good for young players," he concluded.

New Zealand bounced back from their shock loss to the United Arab Emirates to win the third and final T20I in Dubai on Sunday by 32 runs to clinch the series. The UAE had romped to a seven-wicket win on Saturday to register their first victory over New Zealand in any format, but the hosts slumped to 53-5 in pursuit of 167 in the finale. Aayan Afzal Khan, the 17-year-old who starred with the ball in the second match, put up spirited resistance with 42 off 36 balls but the run rate ultimately proved too steep for the UAE.
Left-arm medium pace bowler Ben Lister claimed 3-35, including the wickets of captain Muhammad Waseem and Aayan, and effected a run out as the UAE ended well short on 134-7.
Will Young made 56 and Mark Chapman (51) hit his second successive half-century to guide New Zealand to a total of 166-5 after they were put in to bat.
Seamer Junaid Siddique removed both Young and Chapman after earlier dismissing opener Tim Seifert, to finish with 3-26 as the pick of the UAE bowlers.

United Arab Emirates captain Muhammad Waseem made 55 to set up a seven-wicket win over New Zealand on Saturday in Dubai as the hosts levelled the three-match T20 series. Set 143 to win after again choosing to bowl first, the UAE lost opener Aryansh Sharma without scoring before Waseem and Vriitya Aravind (25) steadied the innings. Waseem struck four fours and three sixes in his 29-ball knock, which ended when he skied left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to extra cover. Asif Khan finished off the job with an unbeaten 48 as he smacked New Zealand skipper Tim Southee for three boundaries in the 16th over to seal a famous victory with 26 balls to spare.
Mark Chapman's 63 was the standout contribution in New Zealand's 142-8.
Opener Chad Bowes and Jimmy Neesham, who both scored 21, were the only other batters to reach double figures for the tourists.
Aayan Afzal Khan ripped through New Zealand's top order, the left-arm spinner bowling Santner and Dane Cleaver in successive balls before having Bowes stumped to record figures of 3-20.
New Zealand won the first match of the series by 19 runs on Thursday. The series finale is at the same venue on Sunday.

India's star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came out with a blunt take while talking about the side's ongoing three-match T20I series against Ireland in Dublin. The series kicked off on Friday with Jasprit Bumrah, who made a return to international cricket after an 11-month injury lay-off, leading the Indian side to a two-run victory via DLS method after rain came strong and forced the match to be called off. While referring to the two-match T20I contest between India and Ireland from 2022, Ashwin said that he doubts the Paul Stirling-led side would be able to give a fight to India.
"Last time India toured Ireland for T20s, the home side were more than competitive but this time I really doubt there would be a fight," wrote Ashwin on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"We won a game defending 225 by 4 runs last time!
"This attack consisting of Arshdeep, Bumrah and Prasidh might just be too much to handle," he added.

We won a game defending 225 by 4 runs last time!
This attack consisting of Arshdeep, Bumrah and Prasidh might just be too much to handle....
India were 47 for 2 in 6.5 overs in chase of 140 runs when rain interrupted the game and eventually forced it to be called off.
Craig Young dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma on consecutive deliveries to bring Ireland back in the game after the Jaiswal-Ruturaj Gaikwad duo provided India a solid start.
Ravi Bishnoi (2 for 23) and Bumrah (2 for 24) shone with two wickets apiece as India restricted Ireland to 139 for 7 in 20 overs. Barry McCarthy scored 51 not out off 33 balls after India skipper Bumrah won the toss and opted to bowl first in the game.
Jasprit Bumrah took only two balls to get his first international wicket in about 11 months for the Indian cricket team. His return was an eagerly anticipated one for the side ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and the World Cup 2023. And against Ireland Bumrah made it extra-special by returning with figures of 2/24 to grab the player-of-the-match award on his international return, on Friday said he was not nervous and never felt he "missed out a lot". Bumrah took the wickets in the first over itself.
Bumrah last featured for India exactly 327 years back in a bilateral T20I series at home against Australia.
A back injury would rule him out from the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, with the pacer undergoing surgery and beginning a prolonged rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy.
"I was not really nervous but very happy to be back," Bumrah, who returned with 2 for 24, said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
"When you're captaining you are thinking more about the whole team and not just your own performance." Captaining a second-string side against Ireland in Malahide here on his comeback, Bumrah led India to a two-run win over Ireland by DLS Method in the first T20I of the three-match series.
"I felt very good. So many sessions I did at the NCA, didn't feel I missed out a lot or was doing something new," he said.
"Credit to the staff there, they kept me in good spirits. You are not thinking about yourself, you are thinking about others out there.
"I think the IPL also helps. It is always good, wherever we go, they support us, that helps us to keep the spirit high." Opting to field, Bumrah had a perfect start, grabbing two wickets giving away just two runs in his first over.
"There was some swing upfront, so we wanted to use it. Luckily, we won the toss and it was coming out fine. There was some help due to the weather, so very happy." Ireland, however, took India to cleaners in the back-end when they scored 54 runs off five overs to lift them to a respectable 139 for 7.
"In every game, you would want more. They played well, after a crisis, they played well, credit where it is due," Bumrah said.
"Even when you win, there are areas to improve on. Everybody is very confident, they are very well prepared." The loss meant Barry McCarthy's 51 not out from 33 balls batting at No 8 went in vain.
"Always nice to contribute to the team. Disappointed to not go over the line," he said.
On his partnership with Curtis Campher, he said: "We knew we could put a score on the board. We are both aggressive players and we wanted to stay positive.
"I think playing the positive way brings the game into the hands of someone who is going to get you to a score.
"Taking the game to the opposition is the best way. Happy to contribute to the team no matter what position I bat in," he signed off.
Pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah ticked all the boxes on his much-anticipated return to lead India to a two-run win over Ireland by DLS Method in a rain-interrupted first T20I of the three-match series, here on Friday. Leading the side on his return after an 11-month injury layoff, Bumrah claimed 2 for 24 with nine dot balls and formed a formidable pair with T20I debutant Prasidh Krishna (2/32) to restrict Ireland to 139 for 7 after opting to bowl.
Things looked bleak for the hosts after they were down 59 for 6 in the 11th over but their No 8 Barry McCarthy produced an amazing recovery, blazing his way to a 33-ball 51 not out (4x4, 4x6) to lift their total to a respectable 139 for 7.
He stitched a seventh wicket 57-run partnership with Curtis Campher (39) as Ireland reeled off 54 runs in the last five overs, losing just one wicket.
McCarthy was the stand out batter for the hosts as he reached his maiden half-century with a last-ball six off Arshdeep Singh who leaked 22 runs in the last over with McCarthy going hammers and tongs with two sixes and a four.
Chasing the tricky target under overcast conditions, India were off to a fluent start with Yashasvi Jaiswal (24; 23b) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (19 not out) putting together 46 runs in 6.2 overs.
But Craig Young produced a double blow, taking the left-handed duo of Jaiswal and Tilak Varma who was out for a golden duck.
India vice-captain Gaikwad, however, showed maturity and watched through the tricky phased, well aware that they were ahead of the DLS par score.
There was no stopping rain as umpires decided to call off the game at 6.15pm local time with India taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The victory also saw India return to winning ways after they went down 2-3 in the T20I series in the West Indies.
The second T20I is slated here on Sunday.
All eyes on Bumrah, the Indian pace sensation did not disappoint.
He bowled with rhythm, accuracy and a lot of venom. His rhythm was a lot better, he ran fast in his run-up to generate momentum and slowly ramped up the speed gun and went on to clock 140kph in the penultimate over when he conceded just one run.
He leaked 13 runs in just one of his four overs -- 16th.
Bumrah bowled up front only to see Irish opener Andy Balbirnie nudging his fuller delivery for a boundary behind square boundary.
Bumrah was quick to bounce back and knocked over Balbirnie's off-stump with a searing inswinger.
He grabbed in-form wicketkepper-batter Lorcan Tucker in his fifth delivery to get his campaign up and running.
After four overs, Prasidh, who made his T20I debut, was handed the ball and he ended the struggle of Harry Tector (9) with the batter giving a simple catch to Tilak Varma while looking for a ramp shot.
The wily Bishnoi then bamboozled skipper Paul Stirling (11) with a googly as Ireland slumped to 27 for 4 in the powerplay.
The hosts continued to pay the price for poor execution as Prasidh had George Dockrell (3) caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad at cover with a back-of-a-length delivery.
Campher hit a welcome boundary with a reverse sweep, while Mark Adair (16) picked up two fours to take Ireland to 50 for 5 in 9 overs.
However, Bishnoi came back to remove Adair after winning a video referral for an LBW decision. The batter danced down the track and looked to play a slog shot only to be hit on the pads by a ball turning in from outside.
McCarthy brought up Ireland's first maximum when he deposited Bishnoi over long on in the 13th over.
Campher ramped one over short fine, while McCarthy clubbed one across the mid-wicket boundary as the two kept Ireland ticking.
When Bumrah returned, Campher sent a low full toss across extra cover before smoking the India pacer for a maximum.
Prasidh was next in line as McCarthy slammed him across the point region before depositing the next on over long-on. He ended the over with another four as 15 runs came of it.

With the uncertainty over KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer's fitness, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has suggested a couple of solutions for the Indian team heading into the World Cup. Both Rahul and Iyer are currently undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy, and their absence has left a massive void in the Indian middle-order. While India have tried different combinations to address the issue, none of the players have managed to impress head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma.
Hogg suggested that Ishan Kishan can't bat in the middle but India can use him up top to open with Rohit. In this case, they can go with youngster Tilak Varma for the no. 4 slot.
"If they're (Iyer and Rahul) not fit, we need a keeper in this team. I don't think Ishan Kishan can bat lower down the order. I think he is predominantly an opener," Hogg said on Instagram.
However, the 52-year-old gave another solution in the form Sanju Samson, who according to him can "offer something substantial" if India decide to go with the opening combination of Shubman Gill and Rohit.
"If they go with Gill and Rohit Sharma at the top of the order with Sanju Samson at No. 4 as the Indian keeper going into that World Cup. I think he can offer something substantial in that position," he added.
India will open their World Cup campaign on October 8 against Hogg's former team, Australia, in Chennai.
Prior to the showpiece event, India will take part in the Asia Cup, which will be played in the ODI format.
They will also take on Australia in a preparatory three-match ODI series between the two events.

5.1 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Wow, one of the shots of the day and the 50 is already up for West Indies. Yuzvendra Chahal tosses it up first up around middle and leg, Brandon King skips down the track and launches it high and handsome well over the wide long on fence for a biggie.
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a glittering manifestation of their talent as India humbled West Indies by nine wickets in the fourth T20 International in Lauderhill, United States of America on Saturday. India hunted down 179 with full three overs to spare, and the victory helped them to level the five-match series 2-2. The deciding fifth T20I will be played on Sunday. Coming into this match, India needed some runs from their openers and the two young men did precisely that.
Gill (77 off 47 balls) and Jaiswal (84 not out off 51 balls) slipped into overdrive from ball one and they seldom downshifted either. They made 165 runs together and it was India's best stand for the opening wicket in this series so far.
There were apprehensions of pitch getting slowed down in the second half of the match, as it often happened in the past. But the centre square that was recently refurbished using the Mississippi soil stayed true for the whole course of the match.
Gill and Jaiswal used the wicket's friendly nature to the hilt as 66 runs cascaded in the Power Play segment. The eight fours and three sixes they smoked during that phase, underscored Indian batters' dominance.
Incidentally, all three sixes took birth off Gill's punishing bat.
Gill was the first to stroll past the fifty-run mark, cutting Rovman Powell past the point fielder for a couple.
Jaiswal soon joined his partner on that landmark point, and it was achieved in an even more eye-popping fashion.
Powell tried to go wide of off-stump but the left-hander moved across and thumped the ball through wide square leg for a boundary, and celebrated his maiden T20I fifty with unmasked glee.
In the process of making 165, Gill and Jaiswal equalled the record for the second highest opening alliance for India in T20Is. They are now tied with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul who made 165 against Sri Lanka at Indore in Sri Lanka in 2017.
Perhaps, it was the first chapter in passing of the baton to the younger crop as far as the shortest format is concerned.
Earlier, an outstanding effort by bowlers helped India pin down West Indies to a total that was underwhelming considering a pitch that offered true bounce and little turn.
West Indies' decision to bat first was understandable as teams batting first often enjoyed a distinct advantage here, largely because of a pitch that tends to slow down as the match progresses.
However, the home batsmen, save Shimron Hetmyer (61) and Shai Hope (45), failed to capitalise on an excellent chance to put on board a bigger total.
In fact, the hosts did not manage even a single fifty stand in their innings.
The West Indies essay revolved around two partnerships - a 49 for the fifth wicket between Hope and Hetmyer and then a 47 for the eighth wicket between Hetmyer and Odean Smith.
On other times, Indian bowlers led by Arshdeep Singh (3/38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/26) kept the Windies batting unit on a tight leash.
Hetmyer, who pounded a fifty, played some meaty shots in the end as West Indies scored at a fair clip in the last five overs.
But Gill and Jaiswal ensured that the total was not even sufficient to stretch India.

West Indies finished with a bit of a flourish while batting but with the ball, they were well below par. With Alzarri Joseph being rested, their pace attack looked a totally different unit and the sole spinner in the ranks, Akeal Hosein could only do so much. Hosein did bowl economically but couldn't pick up a wicket and there were too many loose deliveries by the pacers, hardly creating any wicket-taking opportunities.
WE ARE GOING THE DISTANCE! Back-to-back comprehensive performances with the bat from India and they have come roaring back from 2-0 down to level the series at 2-2. Right from the get-go, the Indian openers looked to score boundaries and with the ball coming onto the bat nicely, they made great use of the new ball allowing them to control the middle phase as well. Yashasvi Jaiswal showed aggressive intent and did get a couple of streaky boundaries but in general, he was unrelenting. Shubman Gill too found some form and timed the ball to perfection, hitting some exquisite shots in the process. The pair put on a record-equalling hisghest T20I partnership for India worth 165 runs before Gill fell. Jaiswal though remained unbeaten on 84 and saw the side over the line with plenty of balls to spare.
17.1 overs (2 Runs) An anti-climatic end! Romario Shepherd loses his line and bowls this on a length but down the leg side, slower too, Tilak Varma lets it go towards the keeper where Nicholas Pooran fumbles a bit and the batters steal a bye as Pooran misses his shy at the bowler's end as well. It is also given as a wide and that is it. INDIA WIN BY 9 WICKETS!
16.6 overs (0 Run) Another slower one, full and on off, Yashasvi Jaiswal drives it towards short covers where the fielder makes a good stop.
16.5 overs (1 Run) Short and on middle, Tilak Varma pulls it towards deep square leg for one.
16.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Nicely played! Jason Holder serves this a bit too full, on leg, Tilak Varma glances it away towards the fine leg fence for a boundary. India one hit away from the win now!
16.3 overs (1 Run) A slower delivery, on a length and around leg, Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to work it away but gets an outside edge towards short third man for a run.
16.2 overs (0 Run) Goes fuller now, on leg, Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to flick it away but misses and gets hit on the pads as the ball rolls down the pitch.
16.1 overs (1 Run) Back of a length and outside off, Tilak Varma cuts it towards deep point for a single.
15.6 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Yashasvi Jaiswal finds the fence now! Romario Shepherd pitches it up, outside off, Yashasvi Jaiswal throws his bat at it and slices it wide and over of short third man for a boundary. India need just 9 runs for the win now!
15.5 overs (1 Run) Romario Shepherd bangs this short and on middle, Tilak Varma gets hurried a bit and mistimes his pull towards deep square leg for a single.
15.4 overs (0 Run) On a length and on middle, angling in, Tilak Varma blocks it back towards the bowler.
Tilak Varma walks in at number 3.
15.3 overs (0 Run) OUT! TAKEN! Romario Shepherd finally draws first blood! Shubman Gill tries to take him on again but loses his wicket in the process. Romario Shepherd bowls this full again and around leg, Shubman Gill tries to whip it away but fails to get under it fully to get the elevation. As a result, it goes flat and uppishly wide of deep mid-wicket where Shai Hope runs to his right and takes a fine catch diving to his right. Gill is disappointed with himself, but he has played his part in this chase.
15.2 overs (2 Runs) A full toss, on off, Shubman Gill drills it wide of long off for a couple of runs.
15.1 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Shubman Gill seems to be in a hurry now! Romario Shepherd bowls a slower one, full and around off, in the slot as well, Shubman Gill waits for it and dismisses it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie.
