Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels India pacer Mohammed Shami's injury has proved to be a huge setback for the team in the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Centurion. Dean Elgar led South Africa's charge after India were bowled out for 245 in the first innings. Elgar scored 185 as the Indian pacers struggled to pick wickets at regular intervals, allowing South Africa to take a sizeable lead in the first innings. Shami was ruled out of the two-match series due to an ankle injury.
"The man has grown in stature as a bowler and as a leader of the pack. He is an able lieutenant to Jasprit Bumrah. You can imagine with the upright seam on this kind of pitch. I promise you, he would have definitely gotten a few wickets. The Indian team really misses him," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
Karthik also suggested that Bumrah and Siraj did not get enough support from debutant pacer Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur, who were pretty expensive in the first innings.
"Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna going for close to 118 runs in their 27 overs. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj going for just 111 in their 31 overs. Siraj was a tad bit expensive, especially in the last spell, they also bowled some brilliant balls. You could see every time they were on, you got the feeling that they could get you a wicket or two. Whereas with Shardul or Prasidh, you had to wait for a batter to make a mistake," he added.
Elgar missed out on a double century as Shardul Thakur got the better of him before Lunch on Day 3.
For India, KL Rahul had earlier flexed his batting muscles in the visitors' middle-order as he scored 101 out of their total of 245, hitting 14 fours and four sixes.
India are searching for a first series win in South Africa.
Jasprit Bumrah lacked support from other end as there was no reason to concede 400 plus runs on a bowling friendly track where South African speedsters showed how to go about the job, a dejected Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said on Thursday. India lost the opening Test inside three days by an innings and 32 runs after scoring 245 and 131 in the two innings but the game-changer certainly was being taken for 408 runs by South Africa in their first innings.
Save Bumrah, who took four wickets and to an extent Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna got pasting of their lives.
"This was not a 400-run wicket and we gave too many runs. We sprayed the ball all around, but it happens. One can't depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah), the other three pacers also needed to perform their roles, we could learn from how South Africa bowled," Rohit said after the match.
He admitted that although there wasn't lack of effort but Bumrah couldn't alone keep the pressure on Proteas batters.
"Bumrah bowled well and we all know his quality. All he wanted was a bit of support which he didn't get. That happens. All three tried hard, bending their backs but didn't happen the way we wanted to. But games like these teaches you a lot as to what you want to do as a bowling unit," the skipper observed.
Young Prasidh, who has just had 12 first-class matches under his belt, couldn't get the measure of bounce and carry at Supersport Park and went for 93 runs in 20 overs on Test debut.
The skipper conceded Prasidh is a bit under-cooked but also insisted that his team would show faith in him.
"Of course, he is a little bit inexperienced. He has got the tools to come out here and play the game. Obviously, if I look at the bowlers that we have back in India, some of them are injured, some not available, so we tried picking guys who are available, based on conditions," he reasoned.
"I completely agree that he (Krishna) hasn't played a lot of (red ball) cricket but there are three guys in their team also, who haven't played a lot of (red ball cricket) but they showed what is required.
"More than what's there in the legs, I think it's in the mind. How you treat your mind and how you play the game is more important. If you think that oh, I haven't played, lot of Tests or FC cricket, then it's not going to help," the skipper was clear.
"When you get an opportunity, you should be grateful and come out and do the job for the team. Obviously, it didn't work out well for him and playing your first game, we all would have been nervous, he would have been nervous as well.
"These things happen, the guy has game to excel but we will back him and has a great attitude about his game which holds us in good stead going forward."
Australia vs Pakistan 2nd Test Day 4 Live Updates: Resuming at 187/6 on Friday, Australia will aim to extend their lead over Pakistan in the ongoing second Test on Day 4 at Melbourne Cricket Ground. The side that leads by lead by 241 runs will be banking on set batter Alex Carey to take the innings forward. After scoring 318 in their first innings, Australia had bundled out Pakistan for 264, taking a lead of 54 runs. (Live Scorecard)
India skipper Rohit Sharma had no qualms about admitting that his team was simply not good enough to challenge South Africa, putting the blame for the embarrassing innings and 32 run loss in the first Test on the lack of collective effort. India put up a shoddy show both with bat and ball as they were bundled out for 131 in 34.1 overs in their second innings after they allowed South Africa to score 408 in 108.4 overs in their first essay. The visitors had scored 245 in the first innings.
"We were not good enough to win. Having been put in to bat, KL (Rahul) batted well to get us that score but then we didn't exploit the conditions with the ball and then again didn't show up today with the bat," said Rohit during the post-match presentation.
"If we have to win Test matches, we have to come together collectively and we didn't do that. Guys have come here before, we know what to expect and everyone has their own plan.
"Our batters were challenged and we didn't adapt well. This is a boundary-scoring ground, we saw them score many but we need to understand the opposition and their strengths as well. We didn't bat well in both innnings, that's why we stand here."
The India skipper struggled to find much positives with the match ending inside three days.
"Not too many positives to finish the game within three days, but KL showed what we need to do on this sort of pitch," he said.
KL Rahul had scored a century in the first innings.
"Our bowlers, a lot of these guys haven't been here before so I don't want to be too critical.
"Important for us to regroup, we go through these times as sportsmen and we need to be ready for the next Test now."
Playing his last international series, Dean Elgar slammed a magnificent 185 and the opener termed it a "special" knock and highlighted his partnerships with Tony de Zorzi (28) and Marco Jansen (84).
"Pretty special knock. Sometimes what we want to do hasn't worked out as plans, but happy that it worked today. I think you need to keep things nice and simple, the game is already pretty complex," said the 36-year-old, who was adjudged the Player of the Match.
"Focus on the ball, play nice and straight. Play late and be great. You got to ride the roller when it is in your favour.
"Good partnerships with Tony, and then Jansen showed his talent as well. You need fast bowlers and a spinner potentially to take 20 wickets, that's how we win Test matches."
Proteas pace trio of Nandre Burger (4/33), Kagiso Rabada (2/32) and Marco Jansen (3/36) smothered the visitors with a disciplined attack as India folded for 131 in 34.1 overs.
"(Rabada) KG was brilliant, but then Nandre showed why he has been such a shining light for South African cricket," Elgar said.
"You can't win a two-Test series if you don't win the first one, the Indians are difficult to beat.
"We'll have a few days out to relax and enjoy this. We were pretty clinical, our fielding wasn't the best and we didn't make it too easy for ourselves at times."

Australia vs Pakistan 2nd Test Day 3 Live: Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon put Australia in the driving seat of the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday to leave Pakistan tottering at 194-6, still 124 runs behind on day two. At stumps, Mohammad Rizwan was on 29 and Aamer Jamal not out two after Cummins took the crucial wickets of Abdullah Shafique (62) and Babar Azam (one), then Agha Salman (five). Lyon chipped in by removing Imam-ul-Haq (10) and Shan Masood (54), while Josh Hazlewood bowled Saud Shakeel for nine as Pakistan's dream of a first Test win in Australia since 1995 faded. Australia vs Pakistan 2nd Test Day 2 Live: A stubborn Marnus Labuschagne weathered a storm to help steer Australia to 187-3 on a rain-disrupted opening day of the second Test in Melbourne on Tuesday against a probing and resilient Pakistan attack. At stumps, he was unbeaten on a glacial 44 off 120 balls and Travis Head was not out on nine after nearly three hours' play were lost to rain. Pakistan's bowlers found plenty of movement in the overcast conditions and were rewarded with the wickets of David Warner (38), Usman Khawaja (42) and Steve Smith (26). (LIVE SCORECARD)
As the Indian cricket team gears up for the ultimate test in South Africa, a country where it has never won a series in the longest format, the debate over the team's best XI has engaged social media, with fans contemplating if India should go with two spinners or just one. When it comes to SENA countries, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja haven't played together a lot, and ahead of the first Test, former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels only one of the two spinners will get the team management's nod.
In a chat on Star Sports, Gambhir picked his XI for the opening Test between India and South Africa. At the top of the batting order, Gambhir went with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opening pair while Shubman Gill came in at the No. 3 spot.
As has been the case in Tests, Virat Kohli took the No. 4 spot while KL Rahul came in at the No. 5 spot as the wicket-keeper batter in the team.
Gambhir feels only one of Jadeja or Ashwin will take the No. 6 spot while 4 pacers will be selected in the team.
The pace quartet, for Gambhir, will consist of Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. Mohammed Shami, who arguably would've slotted into the team directly, couldn't be available for the series due to an injury. For the emerging all-format pacer Mukesh Kumar, Gambhir could only find a spot on the bench.
Gautam Gambhir's India XI vs South Africa: Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja/ R Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to host its 17th edition. The marquee T20 event was started in 2008 and since then it has been a huge success. IPL gives India's domestic players an opportunity to brush shoulders with top international cricketers. This, in turn, hugely helps the domestic players to learn and improve. Hence, there is no surprise that IPL has seen the rise of many Indian stars over the years. Former India batter Gautam Gambhir has opined that it would have been a "worst decision" if Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had not started the tournament.
In a Q&A session on Sportskeeda's YouTube channel, Gambhir was asked, what if the BCCI had never started the IPL.
"I think it would have been the worst decision made by BCCI because IPL is the best thing that has happened to Indian cricket," told Gambhir.
As per several media reports, the window to organise IPL 2024 is from March 22 to May end. The final dates for the 17th season of IPL will be announced once the dates for India's general elections are finalised by the Election Commission.
Mitchell Starc, Australia's World Cup-winning pacer, became the most expensive player in the history of IPL, after he was bought for Rs 24.75 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders in the auction on December 19.
The left-arm pacer became the second player to breach the 20-crore mark after team-mate Pat Cummins was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.5 crore on the same day in the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai.
In all 72 players (30 overseas) were picked as the teams spent a total of Rs 230.45 crore in the auction.
Harshal Patel was the costliest Indian player as he was roped in by Punjab Kings for Rs 11.75 crore while batter Sameer Rizvi bagged the highest sum among uncapped Indian players after being picked by Chennai Super Kings for for Rs 8.4 crore.
Apart from them, Daryl Mitchell (Rs 14 crore, CSK), Alzarri Joseph (Rs 11 crore, RCB), Rilee Rossouw (Rs 8 crore, PBKS), Rovman Powell (RR, Rs 7.40 crore), Shahrukh Khan (Rs 7.40 crore, GT), Kumar Kushagra (Rs 7.2 crore, DC), Travis Head (SRH, Rs 6.80 crore) were the other top buys.
Legendary South African batter AB De Villiers believes that Royal Challengers Bangalore are still missing a quality spinner even after the IPL 2024 Auction. While reviewing RCB's performance in the auction, De Villiers pointed out that RCB released Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga ahead of the new season but they failed to buy a proper alternative who can prove to be a 'X factor'. He also mentioned veteran India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who was released by RCB in 2022 and Gujarat Titans star Rashid Khan while making his point that spin bowling is a department which has been a problem for the franchise.
"One or two incredible spinners I would say, X factor. Spinners. We need a leg spinner like Rashid Khan. We got rid of Yuzvendra Chahal not long ago. We missed him over the last few years, I think. And I think that's still the missing link, So we'll see it. They also released Wanindu Hasaranga after last season."
"So I don't know what the plans are there. Yes. There are some spinners there. I do think we miss the mystery X-factor spinner that gets you four or five wickets like Rashid Khan. Unfortunately, no one could get hold of him because he is pretty much cement. Very much cemented in that GT side. But hopefully, in the future, you know. So I should get to try to get him over, maybe do a trade. I don't think Rashid Khan is tradable at the moment, though," De Villiers added on his official YouTube channel.
Here is the list of all the players bought by RCB:
1. Alzarri Joseph (Rs 11.5 crore)
2. Yash Dayal (Rs 5 crore)
3. Tom Curran (Rs 1.5 crore)
4. Lockie Ferguson (Rs 2 crore)
5. Saurav Chuahan (Rs 20 lakh)
6. Swapnil Singh (Rs 20 lakh)
Players retained: Faf du Plessis, Rajat Patidar, Virat Kohli, Anuj Rawat, Dinesh Karthik, Suyash Prabhudessai, Will Jacks, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Karn Sharma, Manoj Bhandage, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Himanshu Sharma, Rajan Kumar, Vyshak Vijaykumar

Former Indian cricket team all-rounder Irfan Pathan was all praise for KL Rahul for his captaincy following India's historic ODI series victory over South Africa on Thursday. India beat South Africa in the series-decider by 78 runs as Rahul became the second India skipper ever to win an ODI series on South African soil. Pathan pointed out that Rahul has been having a brilliant 2023 - both as skipper and batter - and mentioned the huge record that the cricketer achieved as captain of the Indian cricket team.
"And what a year KL Rahul is having, nearly an average of 70 with bat in hand. As only the 2nd Indian captain to win a series on the South African soil." Irfan posted on X (formerly called Twitter).
Rahul praised his group of young players after Sanju Samson hit a maiden international century and set up a series-deciding win for India against South Africa in the third one-day international in Paarl.
Samson made 108 in an Indian total of 296 for eight at Boland Park.
And what a year @klrahul is having nearly an average of 70 with bat in hand. As only the 2nd Indian captain to win a series on the South African soil.

South African captain Aiden Markram's decision to send India in to bat on a slow pitch on a hot afternoon backfired as the hosts were bowled out for 218 in reply.
India arrived in South Africa without most of the players who took the country to the World Cup final last month. But they won two of the three matches in convincing fashion.
"It's a really young group of players," Rahul said at the post-match presentation. "They have played a lot of cricket but not at international level.
"The message was to let them adjust to international cricket and let them get used to the pressure. Have fun initially and after a few games start expecting things from them."
Left-arm opening bowler Arshdeep Singh rose to the challenge spectacularly. He took 10 wickets in the series, including four for 30 on Thursday, and was named player of the series.
South Africa were well-placed when Tony de Zorzi (87) and Markram (36) put on 65 for the third wicket to take the total to 141 in the 26th over.
But the innings fell away when Markram gloved an attempted reverse sweep off Washington Sundar to wicketkeeper Rahul and De Zorzi was leg before wicket to Arshdeep 20 runs later.
Former international players in the commentary box were surprised at Markram's decision to bowl first but Markram said he didn't believe it influenced the result.
"We were good in small patches," he said. "I still don't think the surface changed much."
Samson summed up the conditions well, batting patiently as stroke-making became challenging when the two white balls lost their hardness.
Samson and Tilak Varma (52) took 88 balls to post a fifty partnership for the fourth wicket but they picked up the pace and eventually added 116 off 136 balls.
Samson made his runs off 114 balls with six fours and three sixes.
The foundation laid by Samson and Varma enabled India's lower order batsmen to score rapidly towards the end of the innings, with 51 runs scored off the last five overs.

34.5 overs (0 Run) Beaten! A slower ball on length and just outside off. The ball moved a bit after hitting the deck and David Miller is beaten on the edge.
34.4 overs (0 Run) Fuller and outside off from 'round the wicket. David Miller drives it straight to the fielder at covers.
34.3 overs (1 Run) A tad fuller outside off. Keshav Maharaj drives it to deep cover for one more run to add to the total.
34.3 overs (1 Run) Sliding down the leg side. Keshav Maharaj leaves it alone and the umpire signals a wide.
34.2 overs (3 Runs) A bit short and over leg. David Miller nudges it away to square leg and the batters are quick to run two runs. The throw is not at any end but through the middle of the pitch. The batters get to run one bonus run from the overthrow as the ball deflects of the fielder who is backing up.
34.1 overs (1 Run) On a length outside off. Keshav Maharaj slaps it hard with his blade towards deep cover. The batters run one.

Keshav Maharaj is the new man in.
33.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Another brilliant review from KL Rahul behind the stumps. Washington Sundar drops it on a tad fuller length and outside off stump channel, getting it to drift a bit. Wiaan Mulder looks to play it with a straight bat but the ball just seems to have gone past the outside edge. KL Rahul takes the catch and appeals but it is turned down. KL Rahul looks confident on that one and goes upstairs after a brief discussion with Washington Sundar. The stumping is checked first but that's fine and UltraEdge shows a slight murmur as the ball is next to the bat and Mulder has to depart.
33.1 overs (1 Run) Length ball outside off from around the wicket, David Miller drives it leaning forward through the left of overs for a single.
32.6 overs (1 Run) Slow and on length around leg. David Miller glances it towards mid-wicket and takes a single to retain the strike at the start of next over.

32.4 overs (1 Run) On the hard length around off. Wiaan Mulder punches it to deep cover and gets off the mark with a single.
32.3 overs (0 Run) On a very good length and around off. Wiaan Mulder blocks it solidly on the off side.
Drinks break! Time for a breather and India have come roaring back into the contest, picking up three wickets in the space of just a few overs. The pacers seem to be hitting their stride and Arshdeep Singh is bowling really well. South Africa are really up against it now and everything rests on the shoulders of David Miller. With that said, Wiaan Mulder walks out to bat next.
32.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! TAKEN! Avesh Khan has the last laugh and what a comeback. Avesh Khan bowls this one slower and full around off. Heinrich Klaasen is taken aback by the pace as the ball sticks in the surface and he brings the bat down playing with a straight face. The ball chips up in the air. Sai Sudharsan comes in running from mid off and dives forward at full length. He manages to hold on to the ball and keep his fingers underneath. He takes an athletic catch to dismiss a very dangerous batter. India will be delighted to see Heinrich Klaasen walking back to the pavilion at a crucial stage in the match.
Is that taken? Sai Sudharsan seems to have pulled off a stunning catch here but Heinrich Klaasen isn't going anywhere. The umpires come together for a chat and the third umpire is called in. The replays roll in and we can clearly see that the fingers are under the ball. OUT comes up on the big screen!
32.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! What a way to start the over! Avesh Khan delivers a low full toss on the pads. Heinrich Klaasen is happy to pounce on that loose ball and he whips it in the gap wide of deep square leg running away to the fence for four good runs.
31.6 overs (1 Run) Short length on offer this time around the leg stump, Heinrich Klaasen clubs it hard towards deep mid-wicket for only a single.
31.5 overs (0 Run) On a hard length on leg stump line, Heinrich Klaasen gets his bat and drives it back to Arshdeep Singh. The dots just keep piling up!
31.4 overs (0 Run) Oh, that was an absolute beauty from Arshdeep Singh! Rolls his fingers on the leather on a back of a length, and gets some extra bounce off the deck. Heinrich Klaasen gets squared up on that one as the ball flirts with the outside edge and carries to the keeper on a bounce.
31.3 overs (0 Run) On a fuller length with a slight movement across the off stump, Heinrich Klaasen solidly drives it towards mid off but fails to pierce the gap.
31.2 overs (0 Run) On a harder length angling across the off stump, Heinrich Klaasen stands tall and punches it straight to the cover fielder.
31.1 overs (0 Run) Bowls from over the wicket on a back of a length, around the leg stump, Heinrich Klaasen pushes it towards mid on.
30.6 overs (0 Run) Pitched up again outside off. David Miller brings down his bat in time to block it safely.
30.5 overs (1 Run) Fuller on the pads. Heinrich Klaasen flicks it away to deep mid-wicket for only a single. A good over from Avesh Khan so far.
30.5 overs (1 Run) Sliding down the leg side. Heinrich Klaasen leaves it alone for the keeper to collect and the umpire signals a wide.
30.4 overs (1 Run) On the hard length outside off. David Miller knocks it down wide of mid off an sets off for a quick single. A direct hit at the bowler's end would have been close.
30.3 overs (2 Runs) A bit short and over off. David Miller guides it towards deep point on the bounce. The batters get a brace.
30.2 overs (0 Run) On a very good length just around off. David Miller hangs back and blocks it on the off side.

As Chennai Super Kings gear up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, the big question over MS Dhoni's successor remains. Ravindra Jadeja was tried as CSK's skipper in 2022 but the strategy faltered to the extent that Dhoni had to be reinstated as the franchise's captain in the middle of the season. While Jadeja's return as the team's skipper is unlikely, CSK continue to hunt for a new captain. When head coach Stephen Fleming was asked about the 'succession plan' for MS Dhoni in the IPL 2024 auction, he gave a rather unexpected response.
During a press conference at the auction in Dubai, Fleming said that CSK have had succession plans for Dhoni for the past 10 years but he continues to lead the team with as much enthusiasm as ever.
"We've had succession plans for MS for about 10 years. It is going to be a talking point., but he is as engaged and as enthusiastic as I have seen him for a while. While that passion is there for the team and franchise, we'll roll on," Fleming said in response to the question.
After CSK signed New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell in the auction, Fleming was asked if they see him as a replacement for Ben Stokes. Fleming, giving a candid response, highlighted how Stokes had only played one game for CSK last season, and hence, isn't too difficult to replace.
"He played just one game, so not massive shoes. Daryl is a different type of player, but his performances over the last 18-24 months have warranted this type of a price. He is an unfashionable player, and often goes under the radar. With his ability to play spin he is competitive and he is also a handy bowler. In Chepauk we can slide him into a role. Just like his performances, he fits in nicely and a good buy for us," he said.
Jharkhand's uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 7.20 crore in the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai on Tuesday. Kumar Kushagra, initially listed at a base price of Rs 20 lakh, witnessed an intense bidding war among the franchises, ultimately resulting in Delhi Capitals successfully acquiring his services. At 19, Kumar Kushagra has garnered comparisons to the legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni, particularly for his adeptness at power-hitting. The right-handed batter had participated in a trial camp with the DC team before the auction. Kumar Kushagra rose to prominence following his impressive performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament earlier this year, amassing 111 runs in six matches for Jharkhand.
Across 11 T20 matches, Kumar Kushagra has scored 140 runs at a strike rate of 117.64. Renowned for his sound technique, he has exhibited the ability to adapt his innings based on the match conditions.
Having been part of India's U19 World Cup squad in 2020 at the tender age of 15, Kumar Kushagra made his Ranji Trophy debut during the 2021-22 season, establishing himself as a consistent member of the Jharkhand team.
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022-23 season, Kumar Kushagra showcased his batting prowess by amassing 275 runs at an impressive average of 68.75 and a strike rate approaching 90, propelling Jharkhand to the final eight.
Continuing his good form, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023-24 season, Kumar Kushagra notched up 164 runs in seven matches, maintaining a strike rate of 83.24.
His consistent performances make him a promising prospect for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL season.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 player auction is all set to take place on December 19 in Dubai. A total of 333 cricketers will go under the hammer. 214 of which are Indians and 119 are overseas players of which 2 are from associate nations. The list has 116 capped players, 215 uncapped players and 2 players from associate nations. Gujarat Titans will enter the auction with the highest remaining purse while Lucknow Super Giants have the lowest money left for the event.
Here is a look at the remaining purse of all the 10 franchises - Gujarat Titans (Rs 38.15 crore), Sunrisers Hyderabad (Rs 34 crore), Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 32.7 crore), Chennai Super Kings (Rs 31.4 crore), Punjab Kings (Rs 29.1 crore), Delhi Capitals (Rs 28.95 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 23.25 crore), Mumbai Indians (Rs 17.75 crore), Rajasthan Royals (Rs 14.5 crore) and Lucknow Super Giants (Rs 13.15 crore).
Before the mini-auction in Dubai begins, let's have a look at one lesser-known rule - the silent tie-breaker bid.
What is a silent tie-breaker bid?
With the franchises having small purse remaining, chances are high that two or more sides could end up on a tied bid for a player and fail to go further due to lack of fund. In this case, the tie-breaker bid will be brought in action to decide the side who will bag the services of the player.
How does the silent tie-breaker bid work?
The franchises, who put a joint final bid for a certain player, will have to submit a silent written bid on a form. The side that promises to pay a higher amount in it will acquire the services of the player. The money promised by the franchise on the form would be paid by them to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This amount will be in addition to the final bid made by the franchise for the player. However, the amount paid by the franchise to the BCCI would not affect its salary cap.
If the tie-breaker bids from the franchises are equal, the process will be repeated until a winner is decided.
Has the tie-breaker bid ever been used in IPL auctions?
In the 2010 IPL auction, Kieron Pollard and Shane Bond were sold to Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively through the tie-breaker bid.
In the 2012 auction, Chennai Super Kings secured the services of Ravindra Jadeja through this method.
Cricket commentator and former India player Aakash Chopra feels that Hardik Pandya as a captain is not a "finished product". Hardik made a return to the five-time champions in a trade deal between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. While many expected Hardik to play under Rohit's captaincy, MI's decision to hand the captaincy to the 30-year-old all-rounder earlier this week caught many by surprise. While hosting JioCinema's daily sports show '#AAKASHVANI', Aakash gave his take on Pandya's appointment and said, "It's my understanding and not some inside news. When Hardik (Pandya) decided to move from Gujarat, captaincy may have been a part of the deal. This decision would have been definitely communicated to Rohit Sharma as well."
"Rohit would have also been briefed about Mumbai Indians' future plans. I feel Ashish Nehra had a tremendous role in making Hardik the captain he was at Gujarat Titans. So, Mumbai's job is cut out. They have to provide inputs at a different level for Hardik to replicate them on the field, because I don't think Hardik, as a captain, is a finished product yet," Aakash added.
He further went on to and Rohit's contribution as the leader of the side calling him a legend and praising the efforts he put in for the past 10 years.
"Rohit is a legend. It's an end of an era. He led the team for 10 years and won five IPL titles. He worked a lot for this and also earned a lot of fame. But there comes a time when you start thinking about the future. To be fair, the last two years have been average for MI, considering the high standards they have set for themselves," Aakash said.
"While it's extremely important to give someone a chance at the right time, it's even more critical to decide when to let go of someone. There has been talk on social media that Rohit should have been allowed to leave on his own terms, or may be allowed to lead MI in one match before Hardik was asked to take over. I personally don't subscribe to it. There is no one bigger than a team," Aakash added.
Rohit is yet to react to Pandya's appointment as MI skipper.

It has been a tough couple of days for the Pakistan cricket team as the visitors have been outplayed by Australia in the first Test in Perth. The misery started with some sloppy fielding and poor bowling on the opening day, which allowed Australia to gain momentum in the match. David Warner's 164-run knock helped Australia post 487 on the board in the first innings. The misery continued for Pakistan on the latter half of Day 2, this time with the bat.
After openers Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique gave them a bright start, Pakistan lost two quick wickets before stumps on Day 2. While nightwatchman Khurram Shahzad managed to see out a few overs before stumps, he feel soon after the play resumed on Day 3.
However, the biggest disappointment for Pakistan was the wicket of former captain Babar Azam. Playing his 50th Test, Babar played 13 balls before getting off the mark with a cover drive to the ropes off Pat Cummins.
However, Babar's fun lasted for a short while as Mitchell Marsh dismissed him for 21.

Babar's wicket sparked a mini-collapse, with Imam stumped for 62 when Lyon was brought back into the attack, charging down the wicket and missing in a lapse of concentration, with Carey whipping off the bails.
Sarfaraz Ahmed (3) lasted just six balls, no match to Mitchell Starc, whose swinging delivery sent the stumps flying.
Australia took the new ball soon after lunch and Josh Hazlewood produced a quality bouncer that Saud Shakeel tried to fend off but only succeeded in lobbing to David Warner at slip.
He departed for 28 and Faheem Ashraf followed for nine, caught low by Usman Khawaja at square leg off Cummins.
Lyon returned to take his 499th wicket, with another stumping from Carey accounting for Aamer Jamal before Travis Head's part-time spin took care of Shaheen Shah Afridi.
Australia went on to win the game by 360 runs with Lyon crossing the milestone of 500 Test wickets.

Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings wished "Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma" after Haryana clinched their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy. On Saturday, Sumit Kumar, Harshal Patel and Ankit Kumar inspired Haryana to lift the trophy with their pulsating performances against Rajasthan. PBKS took to X, to congratulate Haryana players youngster Yuvraj and experienced Rohit, two players who have the famous names of two of the most renowned players of India.
"Congratulations to Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, and Haryana for winning the #VijayHazareTrophy," PBKS wrote on X.

Even though both players failed to leave their marks in the final, Haryana bowlers at the end with ice-cold veins managed to hold on to their nerves and get across the finishing line.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Haryana posted a total of 287/8. Handsome knocks from Ankit Kumar (88) and skipper Ashok Menaria (70), propelled Haryana to the competitive score.
In reply, opener Abhijeet Tomar rose to the occasion with a knock of 106 to keep Rajasthan in the thick of action. Kunal Singh Rathore with his 79 provided the ideal support to his compatriot to take Rajasthan a step closer towards victory.
Their 121-run partnership ensured that Rajasthan were in firm control as they walked into the final 10 overs requiring 76 runs with five wickets in hand.
With eight overs to go, Rahul Chahar and Kunal accumulated 17 runs in leg spinner Amit Rana's over to completely swing the momentum in their favour.
But Harshal's arrival into the attack brought the game back to parity, his cutters made it hard for the batters to survive on the crease. He dismissed set batter Kunal in the first ball of the 44th over.
In the 46th he sent big hitter Ajay Singh back to the pavilion for 8. Rahul Tewatia and Anshul Kamboj sealed off the game for Haryana with a 30-run victory.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels that Glenn Maxwell does not deserve a return to Test cricket, saying that the dashing all-rounder must prove himself first in First Class matches. Maxwell, currently Australia's star player in limited-over cricket after his stellar show in the recent ODI World Cup, is bidding to return to the longest format. The 35-year-old has played only seven Tests to date after making his debut in 2013. He was not considered for the ongoing three-match Test series against Pakistan at home. Ponting feels that one should not be promoted to the red-ball squad unless the player has enough First-Class runs under his belt. “No one deserves a chance unless you've got a truckload of first-class runs behind you," Ponting was quoted as saying by 'Channel 7'.
“I'm a no; he doesn't deserve it. But, if he gets a chance to go back and make some first-class runs, then he can force his way back in.” Maxwell's last outing in Test cricket was back in 2017 against Bangladesh in Chittagong, in which his side had prevailed by seven wickets. All of his Test outings have been in the Indian sub-continent.
Ponting's thoughts were echoed by former Australia player Greg Blewett, who felt that Maxwell should have played in the Shield lately.
“It's a yes for me because it's not his fault that he hasn't played First-Class cricket.
“He's good enough to be batting in the middle order, especially on a subcontinent tour,” he added.
Notably, Maxwell has made just 44 Shield appearances in his career, representing Victoria. Since October 2019, he has made just one appearance in the tournament.
He, however, has played in the County Championship lately, having represented Warwickshire this season.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday said it signed the hosting rights agreement of the 2025 Champions Trophy with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Dubai. The agreement for the 2025 mega event was signed by Zaka Ashraf who heads the Cricket Management Committee running the PCB affairs at the moment. "Chairman PCB Management Committee Mr Zaka Ashraf was joined by ICC General Counsel Jonathan Hall in the signing of the hosting rights to Pakistan at the ICC headquarters," the PCB said in a statement. Pakistan last hosted an ICC event in 1996 -- the ODI World Cup. Pakistan was guaranteed to host the 2009 Champions Trophy and also matches of the 2011 World Cup at home but the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in March 2009 in Lahore led to both events being moved from the country due to security concerns.
The biggest challenge surrounding Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy remains whether the Indian government would allow its team to travel to Pakistan for its matches.
The PCB had to agree to a hybrid model of the Asia Cup in August-September and share matches with Sri Lanka after the BCCI said its team would not play in Pakistan due to security concerns.
Pakistan did host the 2008 Asia Cup in entirety and that was the last time India played in Pakistan.
The PCB said in a statement that it has already conveyed to the government to provide foolproof security to visiting international teams for the Champions Trophy.
"The PCB in its capacity has already intimated the government to provide foolproof security to visiting international teams for the Champions Trophy," the PCB statement added.
"Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar in a recent meeting with Chairman PCB Management Committee assured the security agencies' cooperation in the successful hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025." Another logistical problem facing the PCB would be to get its existing international venues renovated and ready for the matches of the mega event.
Presently, only Karachi, Lahore and Multan have stadiums capable of hosting Champions Trophy games.
Australia's star opener David Warner opened up on his trademark celebration after slamming a century against Pakistan on Day 1 of the opening Test match at the Perth Stadium on Thursday. Warner hushed all doubters about his form in Test cricket on the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan, slamming a typically explosive 164 off 211 balls in a spectacular start to his farewell series. After making 'shush' gesture following his Test century on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan at Perth Stadium, Warner says Mitchell Johnson is entitled to his opinion and that he is free to celebrate how he likes.
Earlier in the month in an editorial published in the West Australian, the former speedster Johnson questioned why Warner had the authority to choose his retirement date despite his terrible form with the bat in Tests and accusing him of not owning up to his role in the ball-tampering scandal.
When asked about the celebration, the left-hander claimed it was a 'good little shush' and that he didn't feel any pressure before stepping out to bat.
"You saw what it was. It was a nice little quiet shush. It's just anyone who wants to write stories about me and trying to use headlines, get headlines, that stuff doesn't bother me. It's just the fact that I have to go out there and do what I have to do. And I'm allowed to celebrate how I want," Warner said post-play as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Warner was questioned further on whether he would try to restore his fractured friendship with Johnson, despite having shared a World Cup and Ashes victory with him. However, the opening player alluded to comments made by former Australia coach Justin Langer, who wrote in his West Australian weekly column that Johnson should have "praised in public and criticised in private."
"Mitch is entitled to his opinion. He's a former player. You saw Justin Langer's comments. He said he's entitled to it. You can go back to Justin Langer's comments and refer to them and so be it," Warner said.
In 20 Tests from 2022-23, Warner has scored 936 runs in 36 innings at an average of 26.74, with just one century and four half-centuries. This is in stark contrast with the opener's white-ball form, which has been consistent in the 2020s as well.
Warner believes that his amazing run of form in the ODI World Cup and return to form in Test cricket in Perth had nothing to do with mechanical adjustments. Instead, he argued that it corresponded with things cooling down behind the scenes following the uproar over his captaincy ban appeal with Cricket Australia last summer.
"There's been a lot of stuff off the field that's not really distracted me from a personal point of view. We had a lot of stuff with CA last year and the captaincy stuff and I was going through a pretty, pretty hard time off the field from all that and dealing with it," the left-handed batter stated.
"This year we've had a great successful 12 months as a team. We're all so pleased with our achievements, but we've still got work to do this summer. I think, where I am in my part of my career it's been great. I've not really had much to worry about. People make comments but you get on with it and you've got to go out there and score runs. Today I did that but as a team, we had a few starts and I know a lot of other guys would like to go on. But I think we're in a pretty good position on that [pitch]. I think where we finished today is probably around par minus probably another wicket," the veteran opener said.
Coming to the opening Test, Warner kicked off his Test swansong in style with a belligerent century, putting the hosts in a commanding position at 346/5 at the stumps on the first day of the opening Test against Pakistan in Perth on Thursday.

Unbeaten fifties from opener Yaseen Valli and Jean du Plessis helped South Africa ‘A' earn a draw against India ‘A' on the fourth and final day of the first ‘Unofficial Test' in Potchefstroom on Thursday. South Africa 'A' made 152 for 2 in 42 overs in their second innings before both the sides agreed to shake hands. Earlier, India 'A' finished their first innings at 417 all out. The home side were in a bit of bother when they were reduced to 48 for 2 in the 12th over as opener Cameron Dean Shekleton and one down batter Rubin Herman returned to the hut without contributing much.
However, SA found their fight through Valli (72 not out, 137 balls, 8x4) and Du Plessis (50 not out, 82 balls, 5x4) as they negated the rest of the 30 overs without much fuss.
They played comfortably against Indian pacers, especially Prasidh Krishna who had taken a fifer in the first innings, including a hat-trick.
Earlier in the day, India resumed their first innings from 377 for six with Shardul Thakur batting on 70.
But, he could add only six more runs to his overnight score, before giving a catch to Valli off pacer Evan Jones.
Saurabh Kumar made 22 to take India past the 400-run mark as the visitors ended their first innings at 417 all out for an innings lead of 98 runs.
For South Africa, Jones took four wickets while fellow pacer Siya Plaatjie grabbed three.
The second unofficial Test will begin at Benoni on December 26.

Riding on top-order batter Himanshu Rana's fourth List-A century and a four-for from pacer Anshul Kamboj, Haryana crushed five-time champions Tamil Nadu by 63 runs to enter their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy final in Rajkot on Wednesday. Thanks to Rana's unbeaten 116 off 118 deliveries, Haryana scored an imposing 293 for seven in 50 overs and then dismissed India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik-led Tamil Nadu for 230 in 47.1 overs in a one-sided match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Kamboj came up with career-best bowling figures of 4/30 in all domestic formats as Tamil Nadu batter were made to bite the dust.
Haryana will meet the winners of the second semifinal between Rajasthan and Karnataka to be played here on Thursday.
Rana, who has hardly made an impact this season in the tournament barring a century against a weak Mizoram side, delivered just at the right time, mixing caution with aggression as he shared a 132-run stand with opener Yuvraj Singh (65).
Haryana suffered an early setback when opener Ankit Kumar was dismissed for 12, but No.3 Rana and Yuvraj started the rebuilding process.
The 25-year-old Rana was the more aggressive of the two batters, smashed 11 boundaries and two sixes to notch a strike rate in the vicinity of 100.
Things were going pretty smoothly for the pair but young Yuvraj's dismissal, caught by Sai Kishore off left-arm pacer T. Natarajan, saw Haryana suffer a major collapse before tailender Sumit Kumar played a cameo innings of 48 (30 balls) to give Haryana an imposing total.
Tamil Nadu stuttered at the start, losing veteran opener Baba Aparajith for 7 before Anshul Kamboj started the demolition job.
The 23-year-old right-arm pacer, playing only his 14th List A game dismissed Hari Nishaanth for 1, thus adding to Tamil Nadu's dismal outing.
TN stalwart and Aparajith's twin brother, Baba Indrajith, halted the slide with a patient 64 but his dismissal, clean bowled by Kamboj in the 41st over all but ended Tamil Nadu's bid to enter the final and aim for a sixth title.
The last time Tamil Nadu had made it to the title round was in the 2021-22 season, losing to Himachal Pradesh at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
